WHAT'S WORSE - hippies or hipsters?

I don't like their condescending attitude, and the mean spirited exchanges they initiate; SO I'm taking the first shot this time around. Are there any other stereotypes that annoy you more? And where do these people come from....hasn't the human race learned its lesson yet?

What is the difference?
Having lived amongst hipsters for the better part of a year I believe I can enlighten you on the hipster side. Hipsters: Composite of individuals who reject the mainstream culture they find so distasteful. Common characteristics include: - a disdain for body fat in excess of 2% - penchant for vintage thrift store clothes that an unseen panel of judges has deemed "deck" - usually sporting large impractical sunglasses resembling a bright gas mask - making a bold stand against hygiene through refusing to shower for weeks at a time in order to acquire that perfectly asymmetric side-swept bang or some variation of a no effort perma-hobbit hairstyle - typically congregate in reclaimed urban neighborhoods which they deem as "artsy" - often heard conversing in improper english inter-strewn with a lingo updated monthly of which they pontificate to one another competing to out ironically-judge society - political thought revolves around some vaguely leftist doctrine they picked up from their intro to philosophy class. Most really have no idea what they're talking about

hippies generally don't give a shit about any of this and are more concerned with reaching higher stages of "continuousness"

Hipsters, at least hippies usually have some fucking conviction. All hipsters want is to NOT do whatever everyone else is doing because that would be sooooo cliche.

I find that highly ironic, its cliche to do that.

Jokes are way too mainstream.

Agreed, along the lines what I was going to say.

Hipsters. Jam bands are where it's at! - Phish, Allman Bros, etc.

Yeah, hipsters have never contributed anything good at all: Skinny jeans, fedoras, skinny ties, male anorexia and just being lame. If you like hipsters at all than you are a hipster...Hippies are just stoned, on mushrooms or some other drug all the time and typically non judgmental, laid back people..

bIastoise:
Allman Bros is NOT hipster...they're just an awesome band

At Fillmore East blows away any hipster band

The Allman Brothers are best considered a Southern Rock and Blues Rock band with the ability to Jam, not a true jam band or a hipster band by any means. Seeing as they were founded in 1969 in Florida, I dont think they would be considered either Jam or Hipster. At Filmore East is what made Whipping Post the song it is today. By the way, if anyone has heard the entire 23 Minute track from At Filmore East, you can hear the soulful blues feel to it that one version. If anyone here thinks that the Allman Brothers are hipster, then I seriously doubt their understanding of music to begin with.

macro:
I have been to concerts for both Phish and Arcade Fire so not completely in the clear but agree that Hippies and Hipsters have rather annoying attitudes (especially towards money). I love getting them riled up with my ultra-laissez faire views.

You should tell them that you make millions of dollars a year, and you would donate some of it but that requires too much effort. I can only imagine how much that would piss them off.

it depends, some hippies are just idealistic airheads but are pretty harmless. most hipsters don't have jobs but act as if they have the money and social conviction to set trends and be relevant when they are really just a parody of themselves.

that being said, i would rather talk to a hippy than some bro douchbag who likes to call people chief.

That is awesome. Excuse my lack of knowledge, but is "dickhead" the British word for hipster? I could Google it, but honestly that's not something I really want to be searching for at work...

I'll add "foodies" to the list. I like good food as much as the next person, but my social life does not revolve around dropping $300 on two spoons of ceviche at that new West Village joint every weekend.

the worst thing is foodies are normally people who cannot afford to eat at any of the restaurants they want to. i think allot of hipsters claim to be foodies.

The reason I don't hate hippies or foodies nearly as much as I hate hipsters is because they stand for something - hippies for free love or peace or smoking all manner of mind-altering substances, and foodies for eating good, natural, food. In fact, most of the foodies I know would argue that you shouldn't eat at restaurants at all, and that you should just cook your own food. Despite this being insufferably annoying, they are probably right.

Even if hippies are disgusting and dirty, and foodies incredibly pretentious and judgmental, at least they believe in something - or at least they are supposed to. Hipsters are worthless because they just look down on other people for no reason aside from the fact that their interests are not obscure enough, be it music, clothes, hobbies, films, facial hair, or whatever.

Erego, vis a vis, concordently, hipsters are the worst type of people.

Hipsters are 1000 times worse. Fuck all of those dbags.

Hippies are built around the premise that they do not care what people think about them. They do what makes them happy, as long as it is not overly selfish and hurting someone else. If they wanna wear a nice suit to a ballgame, they will. If they wanna go barefoot to a concert, they'll do that. So what if they wanna get high or trip, they aren't hurting anyone. In the end, they are about freedom, love (both of themselves and others). I am far from a hippie, but have met plenty and they have all been among the most welcoming and friendly people I've met, even if they are "different." Hipsters are all about judgement, image and societal norms, just in a reverse way. They are the kind of people who just do the opposite of "society", without even thinking about what that is. If you are someone who "fits in" to society, it's more than likely that hipsters will not like you or treat you well. Fucking tools.

Those 2 hipster videos are actually pretty funny

The thing is that most of the really hardcore hipsters in NYC actually come from wealthy families. The best example of this breed is Sean Lennon who is to me the prototypical rich hipster. However, I have nothing against hipsters or hippies...I like hipster music and I like the laid back attitude of the hippies. You dont really see to many hippies after college though...I think they all go to law school or something.

As for foodies, if you define a foodie as someone who likes to eat out alot and apreciates good food and drinking then I absolutely plead guilty to being one. Of course I am not into "paying three hundred dollars for ceviche" but I do like eating good food. To anybody who disagrees with that then more power to you...enjoy the chinese takeout and the bud light.

and BTW the Allman Bros were good in the 1970s...but this is 2011. I went to see them a couple of years ago just because people from work were going and the whole crowd was in their 40s and 50s and in khakis and button-downs...kind of made me wonder what i was doing there. Derrick Trucks can certainly play the guitar though...

When they said foodies I think they meant the really cynical ones who talk down to people who do not like to eat pretentious foods.
