What's your read on this?
I cold e-mailed an MD in a Big4's Advisory practice who did the same teaching fellowship program as me (think TFA with waaaay less prestige and name recognition). We had a nice phone conversation in which he explained a little bit about what he does and his path from the teaching program to his current position.
As the phone call wound down, I asked him if he had any advice or if he could put me in touch with someone who had come from a similar background. He said "You know what I'll do, send me your resume" (Pretty standard response) "and I'll put you in touch with Peter (obviously not real name) who did XYZ (a similar background)"
I sent him my resume, and he then sent the resume and CC'd the guy and did a short introduction.
My question is where do I go from here? Obviously I will follow up with the new guy, but do you guys think the original guy is doing something with my resume? The new guy is a good 2/3 rungs lower on the totem pole than he is. Wouldn't the hire ranking guy have more sway than the lower ranking one in terms of a hiring committee/HR? I thanked the guy for putting us in touch but should I follow up with a more direct request to put my resume in? Should I just focus on the new, lower-ranking guy?
I'd set up a call with the new guy and see what he can do for you. If he offers to send it to the hiring manager with a recommendation then you are probably fine. If he isn't able to help you out in any anyway id follow back up with the original guy, thank him again, and try to get another referral to someone specific to the program you want
I AM afraid that you might have come off as someone looking for career advice (and not a job). Part of me feels like he wants you to connect you with someone else for the sake of job advice, but I think he's looking to vet you with the resume. And maybe if he likes you enough, chat with the other guy, and then decide together to send your name off to a hiring manager.
Michael, Thanks for the response.
Yeah, I always frame my emails as "looking for career advice" I think it's a little forward to say, do you have any openings? Usually when I say at the end of the call "do you have any advice on making a successful application" or something like that they take it as a hint to go ahead and send in the app to where it needs to be sent.
I do agree that the asking for the resume was a positive sign, but then I'm worried that he'll only use it in the context of getting the lower-ranking guy in on the email...
Any other thoughts peoples?
