Rude to not actually have a coffee during an informational interview over coffee?
I'll be traveling to NYC soon for networking and will be meeting with several wall street professionals for coffee in a single day. However, that would mean downing 5+ coffees in a single day which would be a serious caffeine overload.
I might be overthinking this but thoughts anyone? Would it be rude to not actually have a coffee during each of these meets? I could order a water or hot chocolate but part of me thinks that would come off as odd.
Go early and order a hot chocolate or something
If they order a coffee, I would order something too. You could also get decaf or tea.
recommend to order a coffee with a closed lid in your first talk, and then simply don't finish it. Nobody's going to notice how much you actually drink, just sip on it throughout the day.
Use this as an opportunity to get accustomed to the 3-5 coffees per day you're likely to become reliant on shortly.
No one is going to care at all. Grab a water, get decaf, get tea, etc. Just offer to pay, so that they can jump in and pay for both of you two.
No coffee is better than getting it with cream and sugar
lol. go for tea
No one actually cares about the coffee. Get whatever you want to drink and worry about important shit instead.
You'll be fine. Get whatever you want.
Get what ever you want - tea, water.. BUT, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, KEEP IT SIMPLE... Just don't be the guy that orders the double cream, soy milk, triple-shot frappuchino with a dab of mint, a spritz of carmel topped with white chocolate syrup but no sugar.. That's an auto-ding right there..
No pain, no gain..
Just get a sparkling water, tea, etc.
"oohh you like me so much that you came to watch me drink coffee"
Nowadays coffee chats most likely happen in their office, which has nothing to do with coffee. I think I was roughly offered for coffee once in ten times.
Bring a bottle of Jack Daniel's and periodically swig it during your interview. Then they'll know who the real BSD is.
"You know I'm honestly already caffeinated up for the day, I think I'll just get a tea" or just get the coffee and take a sip or pretend sip every now and then and don't actually drink it. Throw away when finished.
Drinking too much caffeine should be the least of your worries during these chats anyway...
Thanks for all the responses!!!
When you're invited to coffee with your seniors is it ok to get chocolate milk? (Originally Posted: 04/11/2014)
Or is it seen as a kid's drink? I don't like coffee or tea and that's what I like to drink in the morning. What would my peers think? How about a water bottle?
Probably just get some coffee and put a lot of sugar/cream in it.
Adults don't drink chocolate milk. Period. Ever.
So if I came into work with a bacon, egg,&cheese and a bottle of Nesquik would I be made fun of? That's pretty much my breakfast everyday right now.
Reminds me of Arnold in Pumping Iron ... Milk is for babies, men should drink beer
That is not even remotely true. Chocolate milk is a great recovery drink. I think you'll find that many who are far more athletically talented than you consume it.
It's the equivalent of ording chicken fingers and french fries at a steak house.

Honestly, I like to think that I'm non judgemental, but I'd look down on it. People like other people who are like them. I wouldn't want to put you in front of clients/LPs. If you absolutely can't drink tea/coffee get a bottle of water.
It's pretty funny how you're more likely to be an outcast on the street for your choice of drink then sexual orientation these days. Never saw that coming 15 years ago. Yet again, 15 years ago I was in elementary school and everybody was drinking chocolate milk. Maybe adult chocolate milk drinkers such as myself will one day become a protected class.
If you really don't like coffee, at least get a hot chocolate. Either that or sparkling water.
put chocolate milk in a coffee cup, and ask the guy to write coffee on the cup ( give him a nice tip). Problem solved.
Hahahahaha I'd laugh my ass off. Just get a diet coke or a water.
Unless your eating cake, brownies I wouldn't even think about it. And yes, a bacon/egg/cheese w/ Nesquik would not be deemed to be "peer level". I would try to hide it in, a travel coffee mug or say it was a protein shake b/c you're working out or some other excuse. But would never say it's my nesquick milk.
Just my $.02.
Unflavored milk is superior for pastry accompaniment. Gotta maintain a balance, hombre.
You have colleagues who bother to see what you're having for breakfast...?
If it's a full-service place, get a mineral/sparking water. if it's a cafe/Sbux, get something (juice, iced tea) bottled. Just don't get milk.
Just get a coffee
Man up, get a latte if you don't like taste of coffee. They are sweeter.
You should be drinking orange juice with your breakfast sandwich if anything.
Strawberry milk shows more promise and contrarian thinking. Go with water or just order a coffee and let it cool down during the conversation if it really bothers you. I would just do what I want, who cares what others think.

Dude who the fuck cares? Just do what you want. Don't be a pussy
True Story: When I was an analyst, I bought a quart of chocolate milk and kept it in the communal fridge. Everyone loved it so much that it became an office tradition, and to this day someone replenishes it every week.
That being said, yes, people will judge you. Unless you use a straw.
What's sad is that I probably would order a burger or chicken fingers at a steak house. I'm a really picky eater and my diet is not much different from when I was 8 years old. I guess my taste buds never matured. I'm not a big fan of fancy restaurants. I'd much rather go to Wendy's and get a Baconator. Good thing I have zero interest in doing sales.
Trololololol. Good work.
Buffett would get a cherry coke and a cheese burger. He wouldn't give a shit about what anyone else would think. But, you my friend, are no Warren Buffett.
drink white power milk in front of your superiors and you will be on a quick path to promotion

i'm personally a fan of Sarah
this reminds me of when i interviewed a kid who took a doggy bag home from lunch. real men of genius.
Haha, can we get more on this?
Were you just thinking he's a pussy that can't finish his meal or just thinking he's a tool for making the effort to get it wrapped for later. Personally, this would bother me not at all but I still think it's kinda funny.
I've since started liking tea; however, something that I did in a few informational interviews that were over coffee last year was that I would order a large tea, and then quickly take out the tea bags. Tea is a normal drink (at least I think it is) and it is totally normal for different people to enjoy different strength of tea. So, by doing this, you can basically get away with just sipping on warm water. And although I'm not a professional so I can't say for certain, I would have to imagine that if you cannot perceiver through a few sips of something that doesn't quite agree with your taste buds, you probably won't be able to perceiver through a career in banking; however, that is just my uneducated guess.
Compromise and get a mocha from Jacques Torres...respect
I actually thought the OP had posted a sex related question.
I do love chocolate milk, but I wish my more important questions got this much action. I'm kind of lost with no direction right now, trying to break into trading, so if anybody can help me with my other threads I'd greatly appreciate it:

Don't get me wrong, chocolate milk etiquette is still very important.
Get water
It's not a problem but definitely when you are talking about others then they may think it as a children's drink. Moreover, some people may also take it as you are health conscious.
If you don't feel comfortable ordering chocolate milk just get one of these bad boys:
CapriSuns are only acceptable if stabbed from the bottom.
Go with muscle milk.
