Where are all the bankers / traders???

I am on garden leave so am visiting this site quite frequently as I am a little bored...

What I have noticed is that there are really no actual bankers / traders on here...

This has become a little limited in its usefulness, particularly given the fact that all the advice is being dished out by college kids to other college kids - I mean, how much value can one totally inexperienced guy be adding in his / her words to another person who has access to pretty much the same information, except for interpretation and a second / third etc etc opinion?

I used to visit this site back in '06 / '07, when I was an analyst and back then there was a nice mix of people actually working in the industry and college kids trying to get in. The topics used to be more relevant...

How do you know there are no bankers on here? You're obviously one posting comments, despite being on garden leave. Surely there are more.

thats what the stars are for gents - most people send an email from their work addy to get one of those.

i didnt do that tho, because you were supposed to also be eligible for a star by maintaining a good quality post ratio. speaking of which (cough). CAN I GET A STAR REVIEW? you know, so i can get a little "winton's right" loving. cause they dont seem to come unless you have one. and yes, i do like my ego stroked occasionally. unless of course (gasp) WSO management is saying i suck. :-)

[winton steps down from soapbox]

btw. nice work on the garden leave tier25. looks like somebody's doing well for themselves. they still only give them out to VPs and above right?

As a "college kid," I fully agree. Although I give/receive advice to other college kids about the interview process and other useful/random events, it would be nice to be able to hear from seasoned workers who have actually experienced real banking work.

What about some sort of system like eBay's preferred sellers, with those actually in banking (not just kids drooling over GS TMT and moving to PE/other exit ops before even snagging a sophomore year internship) getting "stripes".

Hey guys - we still have many active certified users on here. You can read about Certified Users here: //www.wallstreetoasis.com/certified-users

In almost every single thread we have 1-2 certified users commenting so I'm not sure why you think there is a higher % of college kids on here. Higher absolute #, sure. More interview and career advice threads, sure. Less bankers / traders, no way. Last I checked, the ratio was ~50/50 professional / college (the students usually just have more time to post and more questions).

Hey Winton - the easiest way to become a certified user is to send me an email to WallStreetOasis.com>[email protected] from your work account. Just include your username and you'll get a star within ~24hrs. Tough to review all of the comments / discussions since I'm the only one giving out certifications.

Tier2Sta, if you want more professionals to come out and participate I'm sure many of them would be happy to (including me) if there were more threads related to later stage career moves, the markets, etc... unfortunately, we can't just get rid of the other threads and I don't see why it is so hard to ignore the "younger" "what are my chances" threads. If you have any suggestions to get more activity from our professional userbase I'd love to hear it.

We've had a lot of interesting and entertaining threads that can always be revived right here (also under the "Forums" main menu):

Thanks for your contributions, Patrick

I can't keep up / lost desire to answer all of the repetitive questions. Rankings and "chances" threads become really old, really quick. Not to mention there are dozens of threads on drug tests, interpreting interviewer reactions, and others similar in nature. In general, before posting a question, one would ask themselves: "Does the answer to this question pose any real tangible value to anyone other than myself and maybe two other folks on the board?" If the answer is no, you probably shouldn't post it.

I actually thought the silver banana and monkey shit idea was a great way to inspire higher content posts and identify contributors and trolls. Unfortunately, it seems people are quicker to give silver bananas for good insults than for good content so it kind of fell apart.

I'm sorry, but that is a self-centered way of thinking. You seriously think people who come to this website should have to follow some ridiculous format before posting something that is plaguing their mind? As long as someone uses the search function to help find answers/insight, then they have every right to make a thread with their inquiry. If it doesn't interest you, then ignore it or go make your own thread that accomplishes the objects of your internet desires. That being said, it's surprising to me that you would feel this way, considering I've always felt you were one of the most rational and helpful people on this website. Well, I still feel that way about you, I just disagree with your sentiment in this thread, because this is the internet, where people communicate without unnecessary rules of engagement (within reason obviously).

This isn't a utilitarian society, it's a website offering itself as a resource for any individual who wants insight or help pertaining to finance, regardless of whether it "offers tangible value" to more than "two other folks." If everyone followed that train of thought then nobody would every post or contribute and there wouldn't be anything to even respond to.

But, I do agree to an extent, considering the search function is obviously under used, as evident by the dozens of background check threads that pop up every day. I definitely hope people like yourself, compbanker, don't get too upset with the state of WSO, because we need people like yourself to stick around and offer valuable and experienced insight.

This is coming from someone who joined this site to get helpful advice from more seasoned people, which ultimately led to my getting FT IBD offers from all of my interviews. So this site is doing something right.
