Where Do Interns Hang Out In NYC

I'm currently interning at a fund on Madison Avenue. I was wondering where interns hang out after work. Are there any bars or restaurants that interns really "swarm". I'm hoping to find a few cool new people this summer and expand my network.

Johnny Utah's, The Frying Pan, Tonic East, 13th Step, these are all young people hotspots. Each of them tends to run on the fratty side, especially Johnny U's and 13th Step. Frying Pan is a phenomenal lazy weekend spot. Hope this helps.

Wow, this is ridiculously accurate. I'm guilty of going to all those places with fellow interns and college buddies more than a few times.

I'll vouch for the Frying Pan, definitely a good spot.

in it 2 win it

Turtle Bay $1 beers... ahh the good old days when I didn't mind that place....life was simpler...

This +10. I am not even that old, but it definitely feels weird going to places like that unless you've graduated in 2011 or later.

But yes, any place with cheap drinks and fratty atmosphere (Murray Hill, etc.) will host a throng of interns. Its interesting as fuq too, b/c these guys get shat on allll day but once they hit the bar, they become as smug as a seasoned trader who just got done whipping around 5 yards intraday. When in actuality, the most important thing they did for the desk that day was succesfully order a bag of cheeseburgers.

"Sounds to me like you guys a couple of bookies."

hahahaha im dying...over here you'll see guys that work for Citi (back back back office) walk around with their IDs out around their necks and talk about how they work for citi and how important they are

HAHA.

I thought you were just kidding until I actually read through the list. These spots just reek of douche during the summer month's. And its funny because you never get the heavy hitters hitting these spots up. Just a bunch of interns, a handful of junior guys that didnt get invited out with the sr guys/brokers/clients, and even more ultra-back-rear-end office employee's. I am not being an elitist or anything, but none of those groups should have any reason to be douchey at all.

Rule #1 of douchiness- the biggest douche bags never have ANY reason to be. The biggest douches I know didnt even go to college and live in their parent's basement. It makes perfect sense really, considering not being a douche is a pre-req to success.

Maybe I'm just contrarian but I despise the Frying Pan. It's ok for the novelty the first time you go, but after that it's kind of old hat. It's a fucking hike to the train, the food is TERRIBLE, the waitresses and bartenders are lazy, they beer selection is awful (I think they only have Corona, actually - might be wrong), it's more expensive than its worth, and it is close to nothing - which sucks when you're ready to find a new spot. It is the quintessential overrated NYC spot

Agree with this 1000%. Whenever it is nice out, the place is fucking packed. Whenever it's shitty out, there is no reason to go there. A bucket of beer is like $60. I would rather slum it out daydrinking at McSorley's than go to the Frying Pan.

Note that I said "lazy weekend spot." It's perfect if you want to get somewhere and just park. If you're planning on moving, that is not a lazy weekend, at least in my book.

Also ... McSorley's ....... mmm.

It used to be so much better back in the day - before they moved and before it became predominantly a college hangout. Food really has taken a turn for the worst and it's definitely waaay too crowded. Sure do miss the old place but the owners have been going through some rough times lately, especially after the got shafted for not checking IDs. The dad of the family (original owner and the guy who started it all) recently died and the mom is now scrambling to run the show and be a mom to 2 teens. So it deserves more credit... a lot of cool people there. The guy who teaches all the kayak lessons circumnavigated Australia (via kayak) and wrote a book about it. Don't be too hard of the place - they're really trying to bring it back to its glory days.

"It also has to do with the new money - old money dichotomy"

Definitely this, but even more importantly (not to sound corny) its the whole "eye of the beholder" thing. For example, you could bust your ass your whole life to get to the top of some PE firm and finally get it and feel like the man. Then you could go to some midwestern state and meet some absolute smoke show who could care less about what PE is or what position you hold there.

A lot of ppl on this site get way too carried away about what justifies "success" and the ego boost that often comes with it. WSO gives the impression that 100% of ppl base their value on income and wealth, when it reality that number is WAYYYYY lower. Theres a ton of ppl out there with big ass egos that arent making a lot of money. I dont think any1s really in a position to say that they "shouldn't" have a big ego, its just that they get their rocks off by something besides money.... to each his own I suppose

Joshua Tree. Hang out by the DJ booth. That is all.

Just roll out in shorts or jeans or something. Bar is the shit and #1 douchiest. They just got rid of their old doormen so anyone who was a regular will need to be prepared.

Now we're talking. I stopped going there since the fund is running low.

Meatpacking is full of hot overpriced girls...I rather hit up a trashy jersey spot, much more fun! haha.

Also you just spent a full day at the office, why do you want to talk about work with other interns. There are 75% of other people there that are just enjoying a beer and life..

one more thing, who cares about the guys..All that matters are the girls at the bar.

On weekdays just hang out at home and conserve energy... after a month or two these jobs will get to you. Enjoy your weekends though. Don't oversleep on Sunday cause getting to bed may be tough.
Strong advice! Kills me when I sleep in on Sunday and can't get to bed at night for the Monday AM wake-up ... as if Mondays weren't bad enough already.

I would recommend the following: Stumble Inn, The 13th Step, Off the Wagon, and 3 Sheets Saloon.

So what you're saying is you work for NYC Best Bar.

In that case, I should list their other locations as well then. And no, I don't work for them. My friend did a bachelor party with them and and recommended them to me. Since then I've visited a bunch of their bars and found great service. Also, the Stumble Inn has great stuffed burgers that I enjoy so you're welcome to try those.

side note- there's a reason their bars were already mentioned by several other people in this thread.

What about Pianos on the Lower East Side? It is a hipster bar/indie music venue during the week but attracts a lot of finance people on weekends for their dance parties (up and downstairs). I have met FT people from JP Morgan, GS and a number of other shops there. In fact the first time I went to that place was with a friend that worked at a HF. I have met graduate students in finance and interns there as well.

Too late for second-guessing Too late to go back to sleep.

I am quite impressed that finance has become such a big deal in NY that people are distinguishing between which bars "FT people" hang out at vs interns.

I guess it's become validation for some people. It's just a job, not one's identity. These are still people that your communicating with.
