Where to live in Boston

Just accepted an offer and will be shipping up to Boston next summer. Not too familiar with the city, but my office is in the Back Bay neighborhood. Any suggestions on areas or even specific buildings to live in? Would also appreciate any info on Boston at all regarding the social scene, going out, etc.

Was in Boston this summer. Would recommend checking out the South End. Dependent on how much you want to spend on rent, you can get a nice apartment while being close to your office in Back Bay. I know a lot of people want to live in Southie who are younger, but when you are working so much I think being somewhat close to the office is great.

The back back and south end area are all expensive. $3k a month for a solid 1BR. But there are some really nice apartments in the Fenway Kenmore area. If you don't mind being near Northeastern University there's an apartment complex called Church Park that is really convenient. (Whole Foods across, CVS downstairs, Solid restaurants, Gym in the complex, beside multiple transportation areas) There's also Greenhouse but that's more student oriented.  Clearway apartments, St. Botolph Street Apartments (Dated). Most of the apartments in the Back Bay will be nice anyways. But they will be expensive. Boston isn't the biggest night life place its more of open till 10pm after dinner drinks city. If you want bars you'll find them, if you want clubs they do exist but definitely not the most prominent. If you can swing $3k a month or get a good deal for a complex. Had a buddy get a 2BR 2B for $2450 and subleased the other room so it was like $1100 a month for him which is insane. - Source: I've lived there all my life.

Ah okay with $3500 you'll find a fantastic 1BR maybe even a 2 if you're lucky. Most of them semi-luxury 1BR are around $3200 a month give or take.

Depends on what you want. Save money, close to social scene, etcetera.

Most young adults live in Allston, Brighton, and Somerville. 25-35 is more South End or South Boston.

Seaport is common place for nightlife.

Going north is still expensive but better neighborhoods. Going south of South End gets you cheaper but more dangerous neighborhoods. Anything west of Back Bay is decent and east is going to financial district obviously, but you may be able to get a cheap place in Chinatown if your connected (heard of 500 per month for a room).

From what I learnt:

  • Back Bay ($$$$, small quality studios and apts)
  • South End ($$$, vanilla, and really annoying sometimes with the population there)
  • Cambridge ($$-$$$, walking a lot or lots of students, college babes if you are interested)
  • East Boston [Maverick-Park Hyatt Regency] ($-$$$$ you got it all, superb city view, ferry/train to the city, cheap amenities due to airport and nearby Hyatt dev subsidy, quiet, good getaway from annoying adults has everything nearby)
  • Beacon Hill ($$$$-$$$$$, super convenient, subway station a bit far, parking is quite expensive, but really nice neighbourhood YOU GET FREE COOKIES EVERY WEEKEND FROM OLD PEOPLE, very quiet old money neighbourhood)
  • Chinatown to AMC/Boston Commons ($$$ apts, but very expensive concierge, but nice concierge, you get access to the small prop gyms, shared cinema, nearby to Back Bay and there is subway everywhere, and shopping is like right down the street Chanel, Burberry everything)
  • The financial district ($$$-$$$$$ apts, you can meet some cool people there (I met the CEO of BofA) close to financial offices, very windy, and cold in the winter, but super clean and organised neighbourhood)

Decent suggestions here. Surprised no one has mentioned Southie which is young and getting younger. You would need to take the Bus 9 to get over to Back Bay so keep that in mind if you start looking over there. Seaport has a bunch of nice new buildings but it would be a pain to get over to Back Bay from there.

TBH, I'd live in South End if I were you but stay far away from the BMC/Methadone Mile area. Two buildings in decent area are the Troy and Ink Block.

Current resident of Boston right now. I live in the West End (think by TD Garden) and man is it amazing. To be honest, I don't want to leave the area for however long I live in the city. Really solid apartments and with your budget you'll be able to get a top notch luxury apartment. It's relatively quiet but has immediate access to the Garden (lively area) as well as grocery stores, coffee shops, train station (one building is literally attached to North Station lol) and has an AMAZING view (depending on the direction but make sure you face the bridge because you get the iconic Zakim Bridge. Also, literally a week or so ago a new place opened up called 'Hub Hall'. Pretty much a new, modern food hall attached to North Station with a huge range of food options. The place has been absolutely popping for lunch / dinner with actually both a Ramen place and Italian place also on the way. I'm probably more of a "chill" individual in that I don't have a desire to go out anymore, so if you're like me then this place is perfect.

I just shipped up myself! I moved to Cambridge and seems like a great spot. I was looking here and in Beacon Hill based on feedback I had got

Southie is young now if you’re looking for more regular spots to go out and definitely a more lively area of the city but requires taking the bus, Seaport is all brand new and very expensive can be fun to go out to but very sterile overall and a bit older, Back Bay/Beacon Hill are more expensive and you’ll get more of the mature finance crowd but still some decent night life, Cambridge is solid if you’re looking for a more low-key place to live many more families and obviously smart people all around while being a bit more hipster of an area.
