Which Fitness Tracker do you use?

You want a fitness tracker that's cheap, stylish, and does its job, but is it possible to get all 3 of these things in one?

Smart watches are out of consideration right now because we obviously all have that Lange, Rolex, or Patek on our left wrist and we're sure as hell not wearing another watch on the other wrist. We're not trying to look like Pauly D from Jersey Shore rocking 2 watches at once.

You can't walk around Manhattan without seeing every other person rocking a FitBit. And I know TD Bank was recently giving away free green FitBit's to new customers.

With all of that said, I'd love some feedback and/or recommendations on what fitness trackers you're all using nowadays...?

e.g.

  • FitBit
  • Jawbone
  • Moov
  • Garmin

I primarily run, cycle, and weight lift. I use it to keep track of my miles, the routes I've done, and it's nice to be able to compare my effort on the same workout from week to week. It's primarily for running, walking, cycling, but you can also manually enter probably 25-30 different activities. I highly recommend it — I'm hooked on it. It's a social fitness app, so you can see what your friends are doing if you want and there's monthly "challenges" to keep you motivated.

I just keep track of it in my head.

1 mile swimming = 3 miles running = 9 miles biking = ~ 300 calories. Done.

Not true. Depending on your speed/incline on a treadmill, this can vary greatly. I wanted a fitness tracker to keep track of outdoor workouts.

Whatever you do, do not get the Samsung Gear Fit - truly hopeless Heart rate monitor is as accurate as taking your time from the sun and you can't be exercising when using it

You're born, you take shit. You get out in the world, you take more shit. You climb a little higher, you take less shit. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere and you've forgotten what shit even looks like. Welcome to the layer cake son.

Tangential to the wearables but I recommend the FitnessFast app for any non-cardio that a wearable won't track. Provides the major benefit as @procrustes mentioned of tracking against previous and looking at progress.

And MyFitnessPal is the best of the apps for tracking what you're eating. Found the wearable apps are pretty bad at intake and MyFitnessPal has a huge database of all types of food and booze so you can figure out just how badly you're destroying yourself outside of 10,000 steps.

Thanks a lot for the feedback! Just downloaded the app. Will let you know how it is.

Not sure what types of triathlons you're doing (sprint, olympic, half, or whatever), but do you really not use anything to track your training? I find that hard to believe - unless you're just a weekend warrior then it totally makes sense.

I do Olympic distance and I do it under 2 hour and 30 minutes, I'd like to think it's not such a shitty time. I usually am one of the first ones to get out of the water, top 10% in the running and struggle in the cycling. So yea, I am not a pro at all, but I consider myself to be pretty fit, and no one in a bank has the time to train like a pro. No need for any technological bull shit tracking your time, just need to get your ass on the road or the gym and train.

Being in IBD, I've found the Jawbone to be extremely useful. It's the only fitness tracker (that I know of) that has an "idle alert", which will vibrate if you've been inactive for a set period (I have mine set to 15 minutes). This prevents me from remaining sedintary for too long, as I'm prone to sitting the majority of my 14-16 hour days.

What are you doing every 15 minutes? Just walking to the water cooler or Bath room or something?

I bought a fitbit charge around Thanksgiving and it's been working fine for me over the past few months. I really just use it for sleep tracking and as a general gauge of how active I am during the day.

Looking forward to upgrading to a smart watch in the near future.

Which smart watches are you considering? Also is the FitBit charge water proof??

It's just water resistant, so I wouldn't use it to go swimming and I usually take it off before showering. It's ok just for basic fitness tracking, but I would get something better if I were training for a triathlon like some of the guys on here.

Regarding smart watches, it's between the new pebble steel time or the apple watch.I had always thought smart watches were dumb, but I've been warming up to them just because they would allow me to keep my phone in my pocket more often. Plus sometimes when I'm in meetings its nice to be able to discreetly check my emails and see if there's anything I need to attend to, rather than pull out my phone.

I have a standard heart rate monitor. I use it to make sure I am in an aerobic state, so my body is burning fat. its not the latest gadget; its enough for what I need.

get the one that will make you more efficient without the clutter.
