What you're doing is more
by Kirby23What you're doing is more important than where you're doing it. So what exactly would you be doing for both?
fortune 500 gig.. help with
by Trojans11fortune 500 gig.. help with the 2010 operating budget, perform analysis for returns, any grunt/adminstrative work that's assigned.
vc gig.. not sure, learned about it a few days ago.. what can I possible do as an intern?
I would
by BankonBankingI would give a hard look to the VC internship. The Fortune 200 internship sounds good at a first look, but I think it can easily turn into a lot of ops/admin work and very little analysis. If the VC internship offers some modeling experience and project analysis work, I would probably lean towards the VC shop. If, however, the VC shop is just looking for a summer intern to get coffees and handle admin tasks (while the interesting work is done by FT employees), then I would go with the Fortune 200 for the brand name instead.
If I were you, I would ask some the VC company straightforward questions and try to find out exactly what you will be working on (in general), what sort of a pipeline they have working right now, and where you will fall in line for the next several months (not seniority wise, but in terms of work responsibilities). If they don't really know what you'll be doing, then I think the F200 is a better route (since even if you are doing mostly admin, you may be able to make your way onto a few more interesting projects), if, however, they seem to have a plan of attack and some tasks already lined up for their intern, then I would say run with the VC and then sell the sh*t out of that experience on your resume.
As an aside, I worked for a F500 company (intern), and was given a similar description. It turned into far more ops and admin work than analysis. To be fair, I worked on a few comparable analysis models (nothing complicated at all), and a few other interesting projects, but nothing terribly impressive, and they were few and far between. My experience may not be typical, but I suggest go with the F500 only if the V/C doesn't sound like it will offer you some decent experience and exposure.
