Will I ever make it into I-banking?

The first time I went to university I got horrible grades and ended up dropping out. I'm now currently in community college, and getting great grades. I'm so motivated to learn now its crazy , i even study/read when school isnt in session.

What do you think my plan for getting into ib?

I will graduate in 3 year, maybe two year. It might be smart to delay so i can get another summer. I have 2-3 summers left for an internships to get a shot at SA.

i was thinking get a "low ranking" finance related internship then build onto a stronger internship then try for SA.

what do you think? Is this dream too big?

You're giving very little details, except a bunch of negative and a bit of positive - "good grades"

Given the fact that you dropped out and are now going to school again, you are probably older. The question will inevitably come up of what you've done between now and then and why you've taken such a non-traditional path. Additionally, your age might be an issue for analyst programs (which is what you'd be targeting straight out of U Grad). Finally, not all CCs are equal, nor are all majors from CCs. At the very least you will need a lot of networking and some luck - additionally, you should be targeting smaller shops (especially if you are a business major). You've got a shot, but it won't be easy.

Your best bet might be to get a solid job after U Grad, work a few years, volunteer, get a good GMAT and then push for a good MBA program - from there you'd have a much better chance at breaking into IB - of course this assumes you build a strong enough application to get into a solid MBA program.

Talk for the reply. I will take this in to further detail.

I'm majoring in economics. I got two 3.5 since I've been back to school. A teacher recommended me to tutor students in economics. Made deans list. Ranking wise, my CC is probably first or second in the state ranking wise. I have heard of other students getting into "top" schools from my CC, so it cant be that much of a pushover, CC wise. Also, I got a job working in corporate security, now shift supervisor. So, striving to put myself in the right direction. Unfortunately, I just feel like it a little too late.

I'm guessing my best bet would be to get two unpaid internship, or if I get lucky a low level paid one, while in school. Where would I look for this kind of internship?

What kind of job would I look for when I grad? what is considered a "solid job"?

Affirmative_Action_Walrus:
OP, what 4-year university are you looking at transferring to?

I dont really know. I have until October, because I graduate CC in the Dec. I don't think i have had enough time to " show myself" since my failure to actually get into a decent state school. I live in NJ. I will try for Rutger- nb, then after that pretty much after all the state school in my state are in the same ball park, tbh. any thought? Maybe I could get into a state school that out of state? any thoughts?

I hate to steal this guys thunder for starting this thread but I have a few questions and don't want to spam that box on the ride side of the screen by making another topic that has similar other topics already (this is more personal).

I have been applying to a lot of IBs recently in a lot of locations. BB, Boutiques, etc in London, NYC, LA, Atlanta, Houston, Boston, and SF (SF? yes, SF). My first question is this: I've got a pretty good resume (of course that's a relative statement but lots of EC stuff like Student Gov, president of 2 organizations, etc). I put 1 work reference for a grocery store I worked at in high school for 2 1/2 years as it seemed more relevant than the job i have now. I pay for college by way of loans and working 25 hours/week at a freight dock and commuting to school from home. should I put the freight dock on there? Do they care that i am able to balance all of that or will they say "blue collar? get used to it, this is no place for you" type thing?

Second question. I had a meeting with the MD of a top BB firm i interned with (PWM) last summer as well as some top faculty at my school. It was about expanding the schools internship program and more or less securing spots for future students. the meeting went well and the MD loved the enthusiasm. this was yesterday. I want to call Monday and thank him and I am trying to figure out how to wedge in something like "do you know any people in nyc or charlotte that you could give my resume/cover letter to?" I feel it might be a conflict of interest since I'm calling to say thanks for a separate issue. How should I approach it?

Grab your balls and start cold calling people. Anything is possible. I had a beer with a VP at JPM who flunked out of college, went to work selling mortgages or some shit for 5 years, then got his shit together and went back to some random school, then got some other bullshit job, and finally got into IBD. You know how? Before he fired his resume into the abyss that was JPM, he had had 19 sit-down, face-to-face conversations with JPM employees.

Do you have that amount of dedication? If so, you have a shot. If not, then you're fucked.

I am living proof that you can make it to IB if you don't have the stellar background, you just have to work harder and be more creative than the 22 year old from Yale with a 3.9. Look at back office positions. There aren't nearly as many people trying to get in and you interact with all the big dogs on a daily basis. I did Client Service for 3 years and didn't go a day without interacting with PMs and MDs. While you're there, get your MBA. You may not be able to party and hang out but if you want this enough, you'll make sacrifices. Once you're about halfway through your MBA and have put in a good 18 months, start networking and mention that your MBA has you eying a different path. The reason why most people fail miserably at coming in through the backdoor is because they aren't smooth about it. Banks are fully aware of people coming in through the backdoor just to get to trading, IB, etc so make sure you put in a good year otherwise you'll just tick everybody off. My way took about 3 years so if that's too long then man up and start pounding that phone.
