Will I Make It?
Hi Everyone!
First poster here. I'm writing this post because i'm really not sure of my likelihood of landing a summer analyst internship in IB any longer. My GPA is hanging low at about a 3.3 and I have almost no finance experience and I attend a semi-target NESCAC school. Some upsides are that I attended the Tuck Business Bridge Program at Dartmouth and I'm an athlete. I've wanted to get into IB since I was a freshman, and i'm really hoping that my lack of experience doesn't make it impossible to get an internship. I know I could do the work if somebody gave me the chance, i'm just not sure, based on my resume, that anybody would be willing to do so. If I network well, is it possible to get in the door (at any BB, MM or boutique) with little experience and a 3.3 from a semi-target? I have a couple connections at boutiques and MM's who could most likely get me first rounders. At this point my father thinks I should drop IB and attempt to get into consulting due to my lack of experience. Any advice or relevant stories would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Don't sweat it too much man. I was in a similar state to you (GPA lower than yours, but admittedly I attend a strong target) and I managed to land internships in venture capital , a boutique IB (one I'm in now) and 2 weeks at a HF come January.
I say it in a non bragging way, but rather to encourage you. My main advice to you is the following:
Dominate a cold email template, and send that shit out by the truckload DAILY. I'm talking a quick few sentences saying who you are and that you want an opportunity for an internship. Send this email out to boutiques (preferably ones that don't have a careers page on their website; less competition). Be prepared for 100s of rejections, but remember that it's a numbers game.
Apply to the BBs and MMs regardless. If you don't apply, you have 100% chance of not getting in. And since you've got some guys that can vouch for you, then that makes your life a bit easier doesn't it?
Try and pepper up your resume by taking some financial modelling classes (if you can afford it). Apply for any finance societies and competitions on campus. Anything to help you look just that bit better.
Brush up on technical before your interviews. I personally never had to go through anything technical but you never know. Better to be safe than sorry.
By no means this is a comprehensive list, but its just a few of the things I did that helped me out when I was stuck in your position without an internship. PM me if you have any other questions. Best of luck man; I'm sure you'll get something!
This is great. Your story definitely gives me some confidence. It seems like the overwhelming sentiment on WSO is that the kids who keep their heads down and grind, regardless of GPA and school, are the ones who come out with interviews.
