Yes I would think that is looked down upon.
The mindset should not be "oh well Duke & Columbia are similar so I deserve to be here." At the end of the day, whether it is you or the kid from UNH - you are sneaking into an event hosted by an organization that you are not affiliated with. You were not invited.
Picture it from a recruiter's eyes. "Well Candidate A and Candidate B are nearly identical on paper....but candidate B (you) snuck into the event so that is an automatic red flag."
Don't do that.
