Would life be better if I just become a bartender?
I've had a pretty good time in college so far, even at one of the top schools, and I come to realize through internships that I strongly dislike working office jobs. It seems like working in finance means decent pay and a fuck ton of hours, and there's very little work-life balance even after taking the exit from banking. The salaries don't seem that great to justify sacrificing your youth, just so you can hopefully have a lot of money when you're older. I'm seriously considering just living in a tropical area and becoming a bartender, meanwhile maybe working on a long-term entrepreneurial project on the side. The pay is actually better than most people might assume, and life would probably be a lot easier. What do you guys think of this?
Do it man, if it were up to me I'd be chasing fresh pow all over the world and working just enough to afford my lift ticket and beer. Or living in a beach shack in Charleston and fishing all day.
But if you're genuinely unhappy with life moving to a far away land removed from your close friends and family to work a job serving a bunch of tourists probably wouldn't make you that much happier.
Find something you're passionate about and pursue that, like a long-term entrepreneurial project. Be one of those people that lives off $500 a month in Thailand doing web development or whatever, that would be much more fulfilling.
Edit: Just read some of your past posts. You're a freshman, chill out. You haven't even had any real work experience yet you shouldn't be so pessimistic. Every one of your comments on this site has been depressing. They don't want you to be happy, they don't want you have to have phenomenal portfolio.
Here's a major key, it sounds like you need to change your attitude on life and see what having a job affords you. I doubt you're working that many hours at the moment anyways. Another one, having a 40 hour a week job affords you security in having a home, food, spending money, a shot at a decent retirement. Bless up, don't play yourself.
You're 18 or 19 thinking already thinking you're on the "path to a miserable existence that offers a decent-but-not-amazing salary with a fuck ton of hours that ruin any semblance of work-life balance." (as you put it in a previous comment) Well guess what, you don't have to choose that route you can get a career in something else other than some sort of soulless corporate rate race that you imagine every office job to be. They key to success is more cocoa butter, not your depressing bs.
If I were you my priorities would be passing my classes and getting laid not selling your soul to the man. #blessup
My cousin moved to Vegas to become a bartender.
He said the pay is good on most nights, especially while he's working in the Strip.
While I was out there most bartenders I talked to were transplants from Portland and LA. They usually said they're making way more than they ever could back in their old home states.
If you are female & semi attractive move to LA now. You will make 3-5k a night. If you are male, move to a tropical place. Make enough to clear your expenses, save for retirement and do not get addicted to drugs, women, or booze.
Golden pony
No don't encourage this guy, he needs to get over himself
I should have been born female.
Here I am trying to figure out how to make 10-20k more next year... Ugh.
Don't do it.
Work for some time first before you make a drastic decision like this. You change alot as a person through your twenties and so do your priorities.
Why not go for a lighter financial role (not investment banking or strategy consulting) and then bartend on the side?
You sound like you listed to too many of DJ Khaled's "Major Key" snapchats.
