Wow... No interview with GS

I interned with FICC last year at GS and now I am applying to GS IBD. I'm really shocked. I know a lot of people from the recruiting team, I don't know why I was not selected for an interview. The other banks I applied to all selected me. I don't know what the deal is with GS. I'm at a loss.... I don't know what to say. Is it my GPA? (3.5, Ivy) Did I do something wrong?

Can someone give me some advice on how I should deal with this....

Sorry don't mean to sound like I am whining.

It is just that I felt like GS was my best shot. I know a lot of people there but I dont know anyone from the other places. the reversal is surprising.

no, it was a sophomore spring break internship.

I called the analyst from my group, a VP from my group, and a MD on IBD side

VP says she will look into it

MD says he didn't look at books but he will take a look and get back to me

analyst says i didnt see your resume i'll look at it and call you back

HR wouldn't throw out someone's resume right?

but thinking back, I did forget to apply online by the deadline......... but I did submit on my school's website by deadline though

If you weren't asked back for your Sophmore summer that should have been an indication that you did not leave a great impression .... you can still reach out to HR and see if they can provide you with some feeback or contact a VP or MD that you had a lot of interaction with and ask them for advice

a "spring break" internship, is not the same as a summer internship. That's more like one of those job-shadowing programs. Unless you mean you interned there during your spring semester. GS doesn't give out full time offers after soph. year (like most banks) but usually they give you an internship spot for the following summer. Does GS not do this either?

HR wouldn't throw out your resume. Somebody on the recruiting team may have disliked you for whatever reason. This reminds me of a girl from my alma mater who was convinced one of the BB's' computer system was 'flawed' because she didn't get an interview, but got interviews at a bunch of other places for FT. She called my friend at said BB and asked if the computers were not working or something. She was dinged because she has a terrible personality and my friend just happened to come across her resume and said straight out "she sucks".

No I didn;t get asked back I definitley don't want to be that girl but I can't help wondering. and yes there is an analyst who hates me and my sorority but it's personal and I was hoping it would not influence this descision.

You already answered your question Pheonix...... this is what happened and it had nothing to do with you actually at all....

You asked all of those individuals and they clearly state "they did not see your resume".... then you write back here you applied on school website, but not GS HR website. What happened was that the resume books get compiled by HR from the GS website which you did not apply to on time. They compiled the resume book for the individuals to look at and pick resumes to interview and your was not there at all. Therefore, you did not get an interview merely because they did not even really know you applied for it.

Anytime they ask you to apply on their website.... they state numerous times at the information session to make sure you do this. I am not really sure why they have you do it on the schools website, but I get the feeling they rarely ever use the schools website to pull resumes or get the information. I think they take the resumes from the GS HR fill out and use that to send around the office to pull for first rounds.

Hopefully you can still do something about it, but I would not be too concerned at all and probably should relax. Other banks will be fine with interviewing and possibly hiring you. I doubt any of this has anything to do with you specifically.

What NDKid said is not true at all. He clearly has no idea what he is talking about. School recruiters are sent application materials directly from the the school campus recruiting database. The online application is purely a technicality, for the firm's purpose (if they decide to hire or advance you, they need to keep track of it in their own database).

Actually buddy, what NDKid said is true. I go to a target ivy league, and we have resume drops. Last year something strange happened. My friend is somewhat retarded, but he applied to the GS Online app, and he FORGOT to apply to the school's career center. What happened was he ended up getting an email days before the interview inviting him to a GS interview pre-event, and he was thinking, wtf? i don't know what division it's for, simply because it wasn't listed on the career site, and he had applied to several places on the gs site. He ended up having to call the career center who worked with GS to find out he got a S&T interview. Unfortunately he got dinged after the first round.

It differs by school. Some schools such as Lehman and JPM don't look at the online apps at all. Only students invited to an interview are reminded to register online as part of a formality, but there's no need to apply online round 1. Goldman is different in that they only look at the online apps, and apparently one can get interviews without submitting to the school.

All in all, phoenix- you're to blame because a many firms require you to do both. You probably weren't part of the analyst book, though it's your own fault and you're at the mercy of the recruiter.

Nobody has called me back, and I dont want to call HR to whine

Except for one senior person in my group who was fired everyone liked me and hooked me up with IBD side which is why I'm surprised this happened.

Confused here but I'll wait for a call from people I talked to earlier today, maybe my resume was really not in the book maybe it was and im just not good enough who knows we'll see

Phoenix09 - you sound like the biggest baby I have ever heard. you should consider yourself blessed you even got to intern at GS FICC because having that on your resume is probably the thing getting you all the other interviews you claim your getting. did you really ask "can someone give me advice how to deal with this..."? Are you joking? Yea, you go have a beer, you make sure your resume is tight as can be and you go get a job at some other bulge bracket that will give you the same pay, similar deal flow (could even be better depending on what group) and stop being a little brat. you got goldman ficc on your resume and you go to a target school, so shut up. you have it better then so many other kids who are out there looking right now for IBD.

bottom line is that a 3.5 at a target isn't that special, having just gone through the process.  you must not of networked with enough people on your school team in IBD who actually read your resume book - my understanding is that recruiting is done at GS by school team members and not general ibd, unless you are referred.

to everyone else, just be grateful for having any interviews.  get the offers.  and work your ass off this summer to get another offer.  it will be rough out there.

phoenix i know how u feel. i applied online thru all the BBs in asia. got 1st rd phone interviews with ms and ubs but no gs. i have no idea why...werid. it's funny cuz they e-mail me a few weeks ago saying i'm rejected. then they e-mailed me again today saying i was reject...as if once is not enough...lol

Ranger...then they e-mailed me again today saying i was reject...as>if once is not enough...lol

good story

Is there such thing as a blacklist (people that pissed off someone at a BB and his name got circulated around all the BBs and then was rejected by all the places)?
