WSO New Home Page & Design Changes

Fellow Primates, just a heads up that we are going to keep rolling out design changes (with UX / UI in mind) over the next 3+ months (at least). We are also now holding weekly user testing to identify pain points on the site to try and make using WSO a little bit better and observe how new and old users use the site. I brought on a UX/UI expert early this month and to date, we've done the following:

1. New Home page design so that anonymous users know what WSO is and where to go on the site with 3 lead blocks

2. Many user experience fixes to the WSO Company Database (still needs a lot of design help)

3. Slightly larger font to help readability

4. New logo with our new tag line "Master Your Finance Career" and slight change to the color blue to make it a bit more modern

5. New side block, Op and comment design to make things look "flatter" / cleaner / more modern as well as some color changes so that everything doesn't scream blue...still have some cleanup here, but getting there

6. Slightly darker grey background to help contrast / readability a bit more

7. Showing the # of SBs / upvotes next to each thread in the tracker, my recent comments, etc for easier scanning

8. New search that allows you to filter by SBs and pulls out Company Search Results so that all visitors know how much rich data / info is in the WSO Company Database when they search something company specific

9. Removed all 3rd party ads and adjusted placement of other scripts to improve site loading speed

On deck:

1. Redesigning the Tracker page & tabs as well as forum to make it easier to read a long list of threads (including IB forum and all others)

2. Improving UX/UI of comments and OP so that you can easily see the industry and status of each poster (drop down that also allows you to easily message, follow, etc any user you see in the forums)...

3. New design for WSO Video Library, Company DB, Event calendar, etc....

I really hope all of these changes make using WSO a smoother / more pleasant experience

Stay tuned!!!
Patrick & Lijana

New tracker and forum container pages...we are now showing the # of silver bananas on each as well as a cleaner / flatter layout...

We also now have two new tabs called "Hot" and "Top" to show the highest ranked discussions in the past week ("Hot") and the Highest Ranked Discussions of all time ("Top").

We will also soon be adding these to each forum container. So, for example, if you want to see the hotest private equity content from past week, or highest ranked of all time, it will be MUCH easier.

Forum containers still need some design work / fixes, but they're coming in bits & pieces...

Still much more cleanup to come. If we break some shit along the way, please forgive us and be patient...my small team is working as fast as humanly possible.

Hope you guys & gals like it! Patrick

UPDATE: New forum design is live. This is nothing major, but basically is this:

  1. User image moved to top left
  2. Industry and Status exposed on 2nd line so that it's easier to see/read where everyone is coming from
  3. New banana, silver banana and monkey shit icons
  4. New follow button (makes it easier to know what users and companies you are following for under your feed: http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/tracker/my-feed )...i dont think 99% of members know about this feature. Another thing we are looking into is providing a weekly/monthly digest to your PM of the new content from companies and members you are following
  5. Making the Rank more obvious (new members were confused what "Chimp" meant)
  6. Date and time moved to upper right corner

...a few things are buggy (default user image broken = fixing now)...

  1. Reply tabs are gone (for now). These will be replaced next week with a new threaded reply feature that will make it much easier to see what users replied to what users (admittedly it's a bit confusing on this iteration, so please be patient)

Thanks guys! Patrick

"2. Industry and Status exposed on 2nd line so that it's easier to see/read where everyone is coming from" I think this is a very wrong change. When I read the comments, I primarily care about (a) the content of the comments, and (b) who the commenter is. But now line like follow button, industry and status, rank - they are equally, if not more, visible as comment itself. It is just wrong. I would make everything except comment and name of the user faded. Well, if the cmment has been voted on, that can also be highlighted, but that's it.

@FairValue" , I definitely appreciate the feedback, but I feel like knowing whether someone is an intern or an associate or a managing director should significantly influence how you read the advice/comment.

Maybe we should make the font smaller and/or grey it out a bit (don't disagree), but I think exposing this makes the back and forth discussion much more informative / interesting.

Thoughts?
