Practitioner’s Guide to IB, M&A and Corporate Finance - Scoopbooks
Hi guys,
Has anyone out there bought / read this ScoopBooks "The Practitioner’s Guide to Investment Banking, Mergers & Acquisitions, Corporate Finance"?
http://www.scoopbooks.com/ourbooks_2.php
Is it worth the money?
Just asking because I was thinking in buying it just to have as reference book...
Any input is very appreciated.
Cheers.
yes, just to have it as a reference book is fine...the book can be bit too in-depth for beginners like you guys
a lot of people at my firm have a copy of it just sitting on their desk, and when shit was slow, I would read through it. It is really well-written and well-thought out and before I star FT in July, I am def. going to buy my own copy
London... you have an SA gig... are you honestly that cocky or do you just enjoy making everyone think that you are a douche?

yea i got it also... its a great desk reference for alot of basic definitions and practical explanations... good place to ground your knowledge and work up from there... you wont be able to read through it but reading sections as you learn about them is a good way to get through it...
so it's not recommended to actually learn the info for the first time?
there are really just the first 2/3 chapters that are "basic" but once you get into deal mechanics, tax implications and capital structure implications I'd say you may get lost as you may have not seen it / dealt with it... Once you deal with them, the info will make alot more sense and be more applicable, otherwise its really difficult to conceptually understand..
London is a SA?! Haha, I love the cocky SA's. It gives us something to laugh about for 3 months, and they almost never get an offer. What a d-bag
Yes... hasn't even started yet. So take his "advice" with a grain of salt...

I bought it before doing my SA gig about 2 years ago. The practitioners guide is great. It's very interesting and a great reference.
i bought it, too. However, as other people said, i have a hard time understanding it since it is "practical." and you gotta actually do it to understand.
Guys, thanks a lot for your comments.
Has anyone have any additional thought / experience with this book and would like to share it with us?
Can't London E1 be banned? Nobody posts so much useless crap on this site. At least some of the previous infamous posters on here were funny -definately not the case here.
Inputs on the book? Anything else?
lui, the book is priceless, apparently couple of kids from one of my clubs have it too... and we are Juniors at college w/ no offers. Definitely buy.
Is Scoopbooks still relevant or it outdated? (Originally Posted: 12/26/2016)
I was wondering if this book is obsolete and is replaced by other investment banking book? I tried to do a search in this forum, but I'm not getting a lot of results. I was looking at Investment Banking by Rosenbaum on Amazon. Would this be a better option than Scoopbooks: The Practitioner's Guide to Investment Banking, Mergers & Acquisitions, corporate finance?
Was wondering the same since Scoop hasn't been updated since 2006. Still priced at a hefty $100.
Don't bother.
Don't bother with what? Scoopbooks or Investment Banking by Rosenbaum? Can explain why we shouldn't bother? Thanks!
Rosenbaum all the way
Can you be more specific as to why you chose Rosenbaum over Scoopbooks?

Anyone want a copy of the Scoopbooks Practitioner's Guide to Investment Banking? Before Rosenbaum & Pearl came out, Scoopbooks was the de facto reference manual for M&A. I personally think Scoopbooks reads better than Rosenbaum in that it explains -everything- succintly (whereas parts of Rosenbaum assume you know what terminology already is, etc.)
In general, a good book for those just starting out on their investment banking dreams (i.e. if you haven't done an SA yet or are presently looking for one).

I'm interning at a small, no-name, regional I-bank and haven't been able to get much modeling/valuation experience outside of comps. I do, however, get the chance to look at some old models that we've used on past deals, and I've learned quite a bit from just digging through them.
I still feel like I need some more clarification, though, and there isn't always time for me to ask the analysts who built the model any questions about it.
Have any of you bought the Scoopbooks "Practitioner’s Guide to Investment Banking, Mergers & Acquisitions, Corporate Finance?" If so, do you think it would be helpful to go through certain sections of the book while digging through the models I have access to, in order to gain a better understanding?

I know there have been a lot of questions about modeling lately, but I am asking specifically about this book and whether or not it will be helpful. So if you're only going to post to complain about all the recent modeling questions, please just save everyone's time and don't post.
Thank you.
That book is a top-notch overview of the industry and all of the relevant terms. Ive had a copy in my office for the past 3 years. I highly recommend it.
I think I've read your posts on this book in the past, but to be clear: You find this book more useful/practical than Damodaran?
I was about to pick up Damodaran for reference but I am rethinking that purchase.
Per my other posts, Damodaran is an academic and while his material is very useful it can get bogged down with granular/technical issues...for someone like fld who is trying to learn the essentials of finance and introductory modeling i would rec Scoop and use Dam's website as a reference...
