Youngest MD...!

What's the youngest age of MD that you know of, or have in your dept. ?

I've heard of a MD at RBC who became MD at the age of 27 - 28. But he was in S&T though.

eric mindich

Eric Mindich was the youngest MD in GS history, when he earned that title at the age of 27. The guy is a freaking genius; he started in the risk arbitrage business and then shifted his attention to distressed debt when the economy tanked in the early 90's. He left GS to head his own hedge fund, Eton Capital.

John Mulheren was a trader

John Mulheren was a trader who made MD at Merrill Lynch when he was 25. He was an absolute madman. He used to wear camo pants, a pink Brooks Brothers shirt and $2,000 John Lobbs on the trading floor. He was actually pulled over on the LIE with a rifle in his trunk on his way to kill Ivan Boesky after he ratted him out in 1988. He ended up making close to a billion dollars with Bear Wagner, though, and became a philanthropist. He lived in my hometown, Rumson, NJ, until he died when he was about 53, four years ago.

bear

bear is notorious for promoting young guys to MD. I know a guy in international equity sales who got promoted when he was 28. They don't give a fuck how old you are, as long as your colleagues and clients respect you, and you make money for the firm.

Bill Brasky made MD at 13.. he celebrated by drinking a whole barrell of crude oil. When he pissed it back into a bucket, it came out as Gold Bullion.

The way it should be, a true meritocracy. Its unfortunate that Bear loses respect on the street partly due to policies like this.

Actually its not a fad, its a grammar rule; I certainly would recommend its use in pitch books.

Using "a" or "an" in front of a word is determined by the word's pronunciation, not its spelling. This is a common misconception.

It would suck to die at 53 after all that. He still had a lot of living to do, no doubt.

I disagree. Dying at around that age would be great. Look at Branson! He's certainly read McGough's poem. "Short back and insides" is the way to go.

Why do these people not go

Why do these people not go to B- School? I thought to go onto associate, you needed to have an MBA. Is this just for people not good enough to be promoted to an associate right after their 2-3 year analyst stint?

You're right FinanceWiz.
Definitely a direct associate promotion is more beneficial.

More beneficial assuming you

More beneficial assuming you know what you want to do for the rest of your life.

One upside to bschool is that you get a structured recruiting process that is conducive to moving into different fields if you so choose.

Thank you for clarifying this. So that's why I always felt like writing 'an hour' instead of 'a hour' before I would correct myself. I can't believe I never knew this (at least consciously). Guess I should have kept my eyes open in English class.
