Zelman & Associates
Anyone know anything about this place regarding compensation, mobility, or reputation? Specializes in the Homebuilders sector but also branching off into REITs, Building Products and a few other related sectors.
I'm speaking from an entry level Equity Research Associate perspective.
Great firm, I had a friend that interned there and he had nothing but good things to say.
Thanks AQM. Anyone else have any familiarity with them?
I've heard good things about them as well, but nothing more than that.
I'd also be interested to hear anyone else's opinion as well.
bump
Does anyone know about the 50 question assessment required before the interview process?
Yea i took it and it dinged me. Good fucking luck. Its CFA 2+ level stuff
Sounds bad lol. Thanks for the heads up though. Any tips from you or any way to prepare? Is the firm just looking for super qualified candidates since they might not have a very formal training program given their size?
Yeah, I took it as well for ER position. Such a stupid hurdle and it's nearly impossible to get in contact with the firm. How do you know it dinged you though? Did you hear back from them?
I had a first round phone and 2nd round in person with 6 interviewers. It went great in person. Felt confident, then had to take that test. Really couldnt tell you what theyre looking for. No kid 0-2 yrs out is getting over a 75 on that test, and if he is, i guess he gets the job.
Did they explicitly say 75 was the minimum requirement? I got a 70 on it first time taking (in 3rd year out. CFA Level III candidate). I don't know how any undergrad could possibly get above 60 given time constraint w/ format and wide array of question material.
that's enough evidence to validate that the WSAT is retarded for entry level positions. one of the positions on there was even ER SA and you had to take it.
Even if it's "retarded" a good candidate would probably take anything thrown at him/her to stand out.
I didn't think the WSAT was THAT difficult. It was hard, but if you paid attention in your accounting, math, and econ classes you'd be fine. If you are a member of an investment group on campus, you have the valuation stuff down...Just my 2 cents since I'm a graduating senior and I received a 70 without studying for it.
I came here looking for information for Zelman since the Director of Research just emailed me about a phone interview.
You can find most of their information on their website. From what I understand, they're the "go-to" for anything related to housing. Really outstanding II mag rankings.
they don't seem to have a large presence on linkedin. anyone know where their associates headed afterwards?
I'm gonna give you guys a little info here. I had a Superday with them back in November when I first made this thread. I know for a fact they had no less than 10 Superday candidates and ended up giving out 0 offers for that position. They claim they hired someone earlier in the process (October/November) but that remains to be seen.
Anyway, I have kept in touch with the Director of Research and he indicated they moved the job to Street of Walls to source additional candidates. The feedback I received was not very helpful and as others have mentioned, this is for an ENTRY LEVEL ER ASSOCIATE POSITION! I don't know what kind of skill-set they are looking for, but their expectations seem way to high to fill this entry level position.
If they are comfortable wasting time bringing candidates in for Superdays than more power to them but something just isn't adding up here. It's all the more odd because a lot of their junior level Associates were hired in what appears to be a more haphazard and less structured recruiting process.
I may get back in touch with them just to see what's going on. I'm not surprised by any of the replies in this thread however.
I agree that the process these firms use through WSAT is not the usual way of recruiting candidates. I remember seeing a posting on LinkedIn for Raymond James, which was looking for a couple of ER associates. I spoke to the VP in charge of recruitment there, who mentioned that the job posting in fact was misleading - and that it was hosted through Street of Walls. The recruiter told me they were not in fact hiring, and so it seemed the Street of Walls job posting was used to source any future potential candidates. Anyhow that is just my opinion from what I have experienced.
Fairly sure Street of Walls is BS, took the exam just out of curiosity for another position and it was much harder than I expected for an entry level ER position. I can also confirm above about Raymond James, also called them to ask and got the same response.
From a buyside perspective, Zelman is the best in the business covering homebuilders and bldg products. Super thorough research with more contacts than any other firm in the space. They publish 50-60 reports per month -- now you know why they need associates, there's just thousands and thousands of data points that need to be organized and published in a cohesive format. My sales contact said they just hired a couple new analysts and looking to hire a couple more -- so I'm thinking yeah they need associates.
I've met a couple of their bottoms up housing analysts and will be meeting Ivy zelman in a few weeks. She is more of a macro person now and doesn't focus on company specific things much anymore.
Sorry I can't be more helpful regarding the interview process. But for what it's worth the exit opps out of that shop will be very strong.

Hello, I have an upcoming interview for a summer ER position at Zelman & Associates and was wondering if anyone could help me out with listing off things to know. If anyone has experience and can chime in that would be very helpful. I found a past thread on Zelman but it was a few years old so I'm curious if it is still applicable. Thank you.
Basically just have some sort of interest in housing/real estate/stock market. Have a few stock pitches ready, preferably small-cap homebuilders/REITs/building products/land companies/etc.
