I recently received an offer for a summer internship in investment banking and I thought I would describe how my recruiting season went.
First a little background on myself. I go to a definite non-target school. Think pac 10 school not in California. The only recruiting from any investment bank that we get is one back office job. I am double major in finance and economics. I have a 3.65 GPA. I am graduating in 4.5 years, not because I didn't get a ft offer (I didn't apply for FT all), but because of the additional credits I needed for my second major. Last summer I interned at a joke of a i-bank in NY, it was really a retail brokerage. It was not paid, but it was something to put on my resume. Before that I worked at a small no name PWM here at school.
Now onto the more interesting section, how I applied to banks. This has been said before, but networking is the key. I attempted to find every alumni I could, even though they were slim and far between. I also tried to find every contact I had through my family (think friend of friend of my dad). The other way I went about applying was by basically cold calling senior level people at banks. I didn't actually call, was a little more creative than that. I would rather not go into detail on how I did this. It worked astonishingly well. I had global heads of divisions passing my resume along to HR. These were people that I had never spoken to before, but recognized the initiative I took to reach out to them. I know for a fact that this got my a first round interview at two top BBs.
I received 2 first round interviews and one informational interview that turned into an interview to my surprise. Out of the 3, I landed two final round interviews. I received one offer and the other I believe I was waitlisted. The one I was waitlisted for, I told them I needed a response very soon because my other offer was going to expire. They called me back right after that and turned me down. So, I may have actually had another offer if I decided to wait it out.
I realize this was pretty long so I'll write a little synopsis.
-Get work experience anyway you can. My one last summer, I found on Craigslist!!!
-Make sure your resume shows a logical progression.
-Contact every single alumni and personal network you can. Most will be willing to help you out.
-Know what you want. I only applied to investment banking jobs, no S&T or operations. I think it showed in my interviews that I really wanted the job.
-All the places I got interviews at, I didn't apply online for. You need to be creative and show you really want the job.
-Know your shit when you get into the interviews.
Thats all I can think of for now. Please don't pm me with questions. I will try to answer your questions here.

this is one of the more
this is one of the more useless posts for two reasons:
1. youve just repeated what every other person on the msg board has said before (network!!! don't use the internet!!!!), and 2. when you actually have something to contribute, ie how you managed to get non-alum group heads to pass on your resume to hr, you don't actually disclose it.
congrats on your offer, but this is really more an example of a masturbatory post (i'm so fantastic because i have an ibd offer and i'm from a shitty school!!!) than one that actually is in the least bit useful.
and i wouldnt have written this if you hadnt advertised this post on the normal forums. if you're going to claim to give useful information to people who need it, don't hold back on the only thing that you know that others might not already know.
well obviously he wouldn't
well obviously he wouldn't tell everyone what he did. either way, it's interesting to hear other people's stories
The reason I chose not to
The reason I chose not to disclose how I went about applying is because the size of this forum now. I felt to many people would be using it and would water down its usefulness. I did hint at how I did it though. I said it was similar to a cold call, but not actually calling them. I can tell you I did not email them and I did not call them, so I believe that leaves only a couple options left. I'm pretty sure some of you can figure it out. I'll tell you that I did contact 60 senior level people at these banks, so the odds that a couple helped out is not to surprising.
I claimed that it "may" be useful, not that this was some amazing guide that would automatically land you an offer. The other reason I wrote this is somewhat explanatory in the title. I thought this might be somewhat motivational for everyone else here that is not a 3.7+ at a target.
Fax? Text? Stood outside
Fax? Text? Stood outside their condos, screaming their name in the rain???
congrats
Landing an ibanking SA spot from ASU is impressive. Good work, nice to see you got creative.
Thanks for your post
I can read clearly between the lines. I know what you did and I'm working on a similar path. Very motivational, thanks alot!
