Reaching out to previous interviewers to stay in touch?

Is it weird to get in touch with people who phone interviewed you (and rejected you) to reiterate your interest with that said firm and/or to update them on your developments?

This is more geared towards SA recruiting for potential FT prospects.

Warning: this is probably 1Mth post about when to reach back out after an interview, but is slightly unique, as always...

Background... I had a phone interview on 4/25/13 with a botique IB. As a follow up, they requested I send examples of my with, which I did same day. They then asked about what compensation I would require on 4/26, which I sent back 4/27. On 4/29, the interviewer thanked me and said it would be about a week 'or so' to sort through the candidates and reach back out for 2nd round interviews.

Hi all,

I applied online for GS's HK IBD (Corporate Finance) and received an invite for first round phone interview. I applied for this position four months ago, and finally heard from them now. To be honest, I wasn't expecting a phone interview from them, since I am from a non-target 2nd tier UC MBA program in California. I have no prior finance work experience. Undergrad degree was Economics. However, I am fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin.

I don't want to mess up this opportunity. I've been working very hard in my MBA program. I applied to BB networking events, did informational interviews with other BBs. Basically, trying all I can. I'm planning to order the WSO guides and study. Am I heading into the right direction?

Equity Research Diversity Informational Phone Call/Interview Help

 on 11/20/12 at 12:50am

Hi all,

I hope this time someone will respond to me. :)

I was supposed to go to a BB MBA Women's diversity recruiting event a few weeks ago, but was unable to go because it was cancelled. However, the diversity recruiter connected me with the Equity Research recruiter, who in turn helped me set up an informational phone call with a female research associate. I don't want to get my hopes up too high, but I am trying to aim for a Summer Associate internship at the MBA level. From a Univ. of CA 2nd tier MBA program in the bay area. No direct finance experience. Undergrad GPA is not high.

Any tips for tackling this phone call? Or ideas about what the associate would ask me? Should I treat it as an informal phone interview?

Anyone experienced this type of call?

Thanks!

Interview with Low GPA

I was recently contacted by a firm's HR for a phone interview for a recent graduate position in AM. I have been working for about 1.5 years. The firm also asked for my transcripts as well. I had a low GPA at a top public school and did not disclose the GPA in my resume.

This firm appears to be quite high on academic achievement. For the interview, should I mention my reasons for the low GPA without being prompted (difficult majors, personal reasons, etc)? I understand that most times GPA does not matter after receiving the interview, but having to send transcript after scheduling interview might be a different case.

Thanks in advance for any opinions.

Hey everybody!

I'm a longtime lurker, first time poster. I have a first round interview coming up with Oliver Wyman GMC for an entry-level consultant position. It's a 30 minute, over-the-phone case interview. (FYI, I have also applied to OW FS, but that app hasn't been responded to yet.)

What can I expect? This will be my first real case interview, aside from some mock interviews.

I am reading through Case in Point, and am going through the case materials from Wharton and Kellogg. If anyone has any pointers to give me or any other helpful advice specific to the OW process, that'd be awesome!

On another, slightly different note, wtf is up with the quantitative test they give? That was ridiculous!!

A little background - currently a senior going for FT positions. I've completed 4 solid finance-related internships over my college career and have held several leadership positions at school including president of a social/cultural club and vice president of a finance-related club. The president experience was definitely a good learning one, I led a large group (think 100 or so) with a small budget (compared to others on campus).

Looks like I took part in roughly 80 phone interviews during b-school, plus probably more that didn’t make it to my calendar. Lot of practice. A little over 40 hours straight of the old smile-and-dial. Since we’re headed into recruiting season now, thought I’d share what I learned.

Standard setup for phone interviews:

  • Be at home. Be alone. Be dressed, but shoes off.
  • Set up beforehand: beverage, Kleenex. Laptop open with something simple-minded and funny on it.
  • Here’s something weird and possibly douchy: I set up a small mirror beside the laptop because I sound better and smoother when I’m watching my mouth move. Helps me remember to slow down and smile. If you want to try this, test-drive it before you do it on a live call to make sure it doesn’t distract you.

The phone interview which use to be a 10-min, HR formality has now become a go to for employers to quickly weed out otherwise identical candidates. It’s harder to stand out these days so employers can be much pickier. The phone interview is also much cheaper than sending interviewers on campus or flying out candidates for an interview. So before Recruiting season is in full swing I’ve put together a few tips to getting through the phone interview.

Okay, so within the past month I have had 3 phone interviews and next week I have another 2 phone interviews.
All of these positions are related to my background such as finance and retail. These are entry level types positions requiring around 1-2 yrs experience.

I paid a professional to overhaul my resume and to write a cover letter. This has given me a boost, but my concern is that I am only getting phone interviews and I am not moving on to the next stage of the process. I don't know what I am doing wrong?

What the hell is this question all about? I just talked about how I like to group valuation methods into three categories: 1. Intrinsic, 2. relative valuation, and 3. contingent claim valuation.

Some silence on the other end of the line.

"Well there's also the looking at recent deals in the industry method"

I say ah yes, I'd put that under "relative valuation". Some more silence. Sounds like I gave the wrong answer. Oh well.

Has anyone recently interviewed at Pimco for the Account Associate position? I have a phone interview coming up and I'm really panicking, heard that they are really technical with their questions. HR suggested me to read up on bond duration, quantitative easing, and the macroecomics of today's economy. There's so much to study that I'm just not sure how I can master all these concepts in just a few days. If anyone could provide some insights and tips it would be greatly appreciated!!! There's not much useful info on WSO regarding this group. M&I has a pretty comprehensive article on ECM interviews, but I am interested to see if people have advice on specific questions that I might be asked and how the process might be different from regular IBD interviews. Thanks!

Hey guys,

I'm a sophomore at UM Ross. Had a first-round summer analyst interview for the executive office @ GS in late March, which I thought went reasonably well. I sent thank you e-mails to everyone involved the next day.

After two weeks, I sent a follow-up e-mail to one of the Associates who interviewed me. It's been another week and still no response either way (not even a "we're still evaluating candidates").

How should I interpret this? At this point, I'm pretty sure I've either been dinged or wait-listed, but should I call them to get some kind of confirmation?

Thanks!

Preliminary Interview with Lehman Holdings

I recently got invited for a "preminiary 20 minute phone interview" with Lehman, so I was wondering what types of questions will be thrown at me.

The position I applied for is "Finance Intern". I tried to use the search button, but everything I found was around the years 2006, 2007, and 2008. Nothing in 2011 or 2012.
Well the only thing I've found is the following:

"lehman is heavily fit oriented.

why lehman
why banking or s&t
tell me about yourself
what do you do for fun?

don't stress about technical, but read the wsj and you'll be fine."

I also want to know what type of work I'll be doing. This internship will be for the summer after my Junior year, before the beginning of my Senior year.

Thank you in advance.

Hello everyone. I was asked for a phone interview with one of the BB i-bank for summer intern. I am freaking out. It is for CDP.

They asked me where i wanted to work and i said I-Banking or Sales & Trading.
I am not a finance major so this is a new territory for me. I am not used to finance interviews. Someone please help me out, i will forever be grateful to you!

What can i expect in the phone interview? Strictly behavioral questions?

If i get through the phone interview, what can i expect in the in-person interview? Technical questions?

by the way, i've been on this site for about 3-4 months and i've picked up some of the jargon. I've watched few videos that wso mentors post which have been really helpful.

I have a first round phone interview coming up with Leerink Swann later this week and I'm just wondering what to expect. I understand that they're big in the healthcare space, but I'm honestly not too familiar with that arena. Also, considering it's a 1st round and over the phone, I can't imagine it will be overly technical, but you never know.

If anyone has some insight to share, it'd be much appreciated.

I got a call today to schedule a phone interview with HR for the John Hancock Funds SA internship position. Also got an email from State Street asking if I was still interested in a summer internship and to send them dates I would not be available to interview... not sure what to make of the State Street email.

In any case, I haven't found much info, at all, on these forums about JH Funds summer internships. Anyone have experience with them? This is also my first HR phone interview, I'm expecting them to lead me through it and basically have me take them over my resume. Is that a fairly accurate assessment?
