Hi guys - I would really appreciate you taking a second to rip apart my resume. I know it is average at best but it can be made better, and hopefully you can guys can point me in the right direction or least point out parts that needs changing.

I graduated in December but a change of heart has me deciding to not go to law school. And so I [stupidly] missed out on any recruiting and my networking is weak in the consulting world. I've been in touch with alumni and cold-emails, and I am trying to finagle something for the summer and lay the foundations for another internship in the fall. Goal is to convert the internships into an FT offer or use them on my resume to get new FT offer.

What to do summer after frosh year?

I'm currently a freshman at a target and hope to pursue a job in finance, hopefully either in investment banking or consulting. I know its been discussed here before, but I was wondering which path I should go down this summer? I could get an internship at a big investment company that invests in real-estate, an internship in the European Union HQ, and could try applying to small-mid-sized IBs that high school or college alumni currently work at. Through my school, I could also travel abroad and do a summer long community service project. I could always chill and do nothing/work a little around town as well. What path would best set me up for an internship after sophomore year?

A 'premium' for accepting FT offer?

Hi all,

Quick question. I was talking to a contact of mine about doing OCR this fall even though I was offered a returning FT position after my SA gig, to fish for more money. He advised against it because he said that many firms put a 'premium' on top of your offer, since they are more aware of your capabilities than someone who they just recruit straight into a FT position. Essentially, he was suggesting I won't receive a better offer monetarily because tier1/2 consulting firms pay their SAs to come back.

Has anyone ever heard of this before? Seems logical but unlikely to me.

Which transactions to put on my resume?

Ive been interning at a boutique Ibank this summer (sophomore summer) and as my summer internship is coming to an end Im starting to think about which of the transactions that ive worked on I should put on my resume.

Ive worked on about 7 deals and am thinking im going to put 3 on there and would like WSO's input.

Which deals should I pick? And is 3 is a good number to include on resume?

Deals:

- *Potential Sale of a Ski resort

- *Fairness opinion of a pharmaceutical distributions company. (I was probably the most involved on this project, very extensive work, did DCF, comps, industry summaries, spread financials, looked through company documents)
- Fairness opinion on a distressed software supplier.

- Cap raise for an ecommerce site

What do I say..?

 on 6/25/12 at 2:32pm

I'm currently an intern at a boutique investment bank and am looking to land a FT at a BB this coming fall. I interned at a regional BB in the spring and took the time to reach out to a lot of the people so I have their contact information, BUT what do I say to them? Is it appropriate if I ask them if they could refer me to someone else to talk to (I'm current interning in a different city)? Or do I just update them on what I've been doing? What kind of questions should I ask?

Maybe it's just me, but it feels odd for me to randomly email and say, "Hi, just wanted to touch base blahblah I'm interning here blahblah..." I feel like I need to ask them a question so they have something they can respond to easily.

Any help is appreciated!

So I've been working at a prestigious real estate private equity firm. My role has primarily been working on compliance, and updating the investment database for the firm as a whole. I understand that the a good name from a RE PE firm is definitely a big boost on my resume. However, I'm more interested as to how valuable the work I'm doing actually is.

Resignation In Person or Email?

Hey guys,

I was wondering what would be the best way to leave an unpaid internship (non-IB or PE) for a boutique IB job that is paid. Should I email the people at my current job? Or should I talk to them in person before I leave?

Its my first time doing this and I'm just worried that they might screw me over during recruiting.....

Any help would be great for people who have experience with this....

However, the people at the unpaid internship already know that I wanted to do investment banking through my interview process and I just have financial difficulties in the family so I just want something that will help me with allowance and travel costs...

Thanks!

So I hustled pretty hard the last few months and got an ER internship at a decently reputable boutique. However, the firm required that the internship be unpaid and that I receive academic credit. I'm going to be entering a msf program this fall so I asked the school if I could receive credit and they initially said that I could. I told the firm this and they brought me in to meet the team and it went really well. So last week, my main contact at the firm tells me I can start as soon I give them an official letter saying I'll get the credit. I contacted the school again at the end of last week to get the letter and today they said they can't give it to me because I'm an incoming msf student.

I've got myself in a interesting situation. I'm currently working at a no-name investment bank where I really don't do much (there just isn't enough going on, not like I could ask for more). It's unpaid and some days all I do is read the WSJ and Bloomberg. It's so small that some people in finance in my city haven't heard of it, and I'm not in a major finance hub.

Ill be a senior in the fall at a semi-target so there will be a good opportunity to recruit for ft, but I need some good experience this summer.

Hi,
quick background. Semi target, freshman looking to break into invesment banking, quantitative double major, GPA range:3.76-3.84
This summer, I got 2 internship (each lasted 1.5 months)
1. Small-medium sized PE shop: i do pre-investment equity research, financial modeling, and some operational post-analyst invesment-structuring and add value to the business, all that good stuff.
2. Branded name commercial bank (HSBC, DBS,..): basically work on market research on competitors, keep tracks of business credit and debit, etc...

Should I list both on my resumes, considering it is a freshman summer? Or should I list only one?
Thank you in advance

Hey guys, been following this site for a long time and after seeing the wealth of information everyone has to offer I thought I could get a piece of the pie so to speak! I'm a 2nd year undergrad studying at a London university and have landed a summer internship at a BB firm. It's in the Operations department however, which is not the area I want to go into.

Believe me I know exactly how hard it will be to break into IB with this and I have no delusions what so ever regarding how much leverage this experience will give me when I apply for 2013 roles. Given this, I am eager to start working on the transition now. I understand the importance of networking and was after some advice; when I contact companies, which level of employee should I contact?

CMBS Internship vs. Private Equity Internship

Consider two options on the west coast, specifically Los Angeles.

A CMBS (commercial mortgaged back security) finance group with a brand name. They offer a paid internship (think $15+ per hour), and the recruiters mention 80+ hours/week for the summer. Intern will be doing all types of work, ranging from coffee runs to the following:

- Support team in evaluating, originating, underwriting, structuring and closing transactions.
- Develop financial modeling and analysis.
- Complete property site visits and inspections.
- Conduct financial analysis of leases, acquisitions, and cost structures.

Hi there! :)

I will be a freshman this upcoming fall, although at a non-target. However, my school is well-know, but still a non-target (FSU)

I have been using LinkedIn and what not to meet current employees at GS, my dream company.

Also, I had access to the alumni database and saw currently 2 alums from my school are MD's at GS, and another 5 are full-time analysts.

Anyway, I am a minority, Native American, and I researching opportunities on GS's website, and I ran across "Goldman Sachs Undergraduate Camp", targeted to assist minority students (AA, Hispanic, and NA students).

However, I didn't see an application on the website. So, does anyone know where I apply for this program? Also, is networking important for this program? I plan to network, regardless.

SA pay

Guys,

I FINALLY landed an SA offer at a decently sized boutique M&A shop. It is paid, however my pay rate is hourly, $10/hour. To be clear, I am not complaining about my pay, in fact I was expecting, and willing, to be unpaid!

I expect to work 75-90 hours per week (they were pretty open about this during the interviews). Is it standard to be paid $10/hour for all 75 hours? Or do firm typically pay you for 40 hours and say you chose to stay late every night for the experience?

I would reach out to HR, but she is on vacation and won't be back until after I start anyway. Just looking for some insight from WSO to plan my summer monies.

Thanks

I had an interview with a boutique last week. Apparently they sent out emails today that they're still in the decision process. What is the best way to keep my name on top of their head? I can think of a few:
- Email saying that I have a pending offer (I do), but theirs is preferred and I would need a decision quick.
- Email the VP asking for advice on a school initiative/invite him to participate.
- Call and ask the VP out for a quick coffee break.
- Add the VP on LinkedIn.

Senior monkeys, please advise!

Or is it possible that he no longer has interest?

Is it too late to find an internship in Hong Kong this summer? I am currently a freshman at a target school, and have sent quite a few cold emails to BBs, but most of the responses are either

a) we hire juniors almost exclusively
b) we finished hiring interns already

I was looking into boutiques, but the only contact info was that for the firm, and not specific email/phone numbers for the MDs. Any advice on what I should do? At this point, I am pretty flexible, I can work anywhere in Asia/America, but Hong Kong is preferred.

To any people summering in the Downtown LA area or to anyone who has before,
Where did you all find was the best area to live factoring in price and proximity to Downtown? It seems like everything is pretty expensive and living in USC housing is a little far and not much cheaper. I have done some basic searching but everything in my price range ($500-800/mo) literally consists of subletting and/or rooming with some "nefarious" characters in the Silverlake/Echo Park area. If anyone has summered in Downtown before where did you find the best options to be? Thanks for the help!

Help: BlackRock PAG or BMO Commodities S&T

Hey guys,

I have an offer from BlackRock PAG for a summer internship, and I am interviewing with BMO Capital Markets for Commodities S&T. If I get the offer from BMO, I will have to choose between BlackRock PAG and BMO Commodities S&T (both in NYC).

Which has better internship to full-time conversion rates? (This is important as I'd rather intern and get a full-time offer than intern for a better firm but end up with no offer).

Which do you think would be better if my long-term goal is to enter a hedge fund in the future? I understand that BlackRock PAG is not PMG, but with hard work it is possible to get into PMG.

Any other factors I should consider in my decision?

Any help is much appreciated.

Guys,

I'm a junior at a target school, did an SA at a boutique IB after my sophomore year, and I didn't land any SA offers this year.

Ultimately, I would like to work in middle market PE for a few years then either start my own fund or run a company, doesn't have to be something huge. I will be interviewing with a smaller PE firm this week ($600-700mm invested across ~60 portfolio companies). The firm is willing to take undergrads for SA and FT positions.

My issue is that although I have banking experience, I didn't really have the opportunity to learn any modeling skills like DCF or LBO. Most of my modeling work was spreading financials, comps, deals, etc. I have a ton of qualitative work on my resume.

So, long story short, a few months ago I had a major death in my family and it really messed me up. I didn't care about school, work, anything. But, as many have told me recently "Sometimes life gets in the way of things".
So, now I'm trying to get my life back on track. I'm a junior, 3.65 GPA, relatively non-target, had a PWM internship last summer (that my former boss has promised me I can have again If I fail to find anything). I know its too late for an SA role, so I'm not really sure what else there really is to do (and I'd really prefer not to do the same internship again this summer, but beggars can't be choosers).

Any advice would be extremely appreciated. Thanks guys.
