2012 DCM League Tables

Hi all,
Below are attached the Global 2012 DCM rankings. If there is interest, I can post similar tables on: ECM, M&A, Loans, Trade Finance, Project Finance.

Call your attention to the first chart, you'll see the deep cuts that Citi and UBS have made reflected in their dropoffs from 2011 levels. Notice also the extremely close numbers between Barclays and Deutshce. Look for a change in the #2 spot for 2013, as DB is certainly trying to make that a reality. Also notice the disappearance of BNP, as their balance sheet overhaul in 2012 placed them at a disadvantage for underwriting business. Credit Suisse is moving up the charts slowly.

The much longer title of this post should be, “7 Things That Everybody Was Convinced Beyond the Shadow of a Doubt Was Going To Happen In 2012, And If You Thought Otherwise You Were Basically Stupid, Insane, or Both.”

I have to hand it to the Fisher editorial staff for putting this gem together. We tend to forget that everything we fear so much at one point turns out to be…well, not that big of a deal. If everybody’s convinced something is going to happen and it doesn’t, it’s satisfying to buck the trend. Here are 7 things the Fisher editorial staff remembers everyone was freaking out about in the beginning of 2012 (http://www.marketminder.com/a/fisher-investments-e...)

Your Thoughts on 2012

So 2012 is essentially over and it's been an interesting year by all accounts. I think it's been a fairly bad year, both geopolitically and in terms of finance (although for myself it's been quite good!). Some of my key moments of 2012:

  • LIBOR - Global hatred of bankers reached new highs this year with various scandals including money laundering, derivative mis-selling and of course, LIBOR manipulation
  • Heightened tensions in the Middle East - Iran, Israel, Palestine, Syria, all of these have been involved in conflicts of some sort and it seems like this will only escalate further in 2013

Hello fellow Monkeys,

I looked up the calendar today and I see December 21, 2012. End of the world right? I’m sure a lot of people are anxious to see how the Mayan prophecy plays out. Thanks to internet and the Hollywood movie, the 2012 apocalypse is probably the most popular one yet.

One in seven (14%) global citizens agree ‘the world will come to an end during my lifetime,’ according to a new poll by global research company Ipsos on behalf of Reuters News.

So people got creative and made a ton of doomsday-related stuff. Of course, other people bought them:

Like a new love, college-students were enthralled under the saccharine moral dawn of Obama’s Presidency; prospecting so much so that they could literally think of nothing else but a place where their safety is guaranteed by the welfare state.

As unemployment fails to recede in rates higher than when Obama began, an industrial-complex as far-reaching and likely as the paranoia surrounding the military and prison system should be fashioned, incubated by the youth who support his so-called “achievements” which number zero, with the chances of his fundamentally reforming education loans looking nill to none.

With unemployment unexpectedly taking a dip below 8%, i wonder if this is the october surprise that will permanently doom romney's election hopes. I was elated after romney's resounding debate victory, but now i'm worried that this jobs data will take away any momentum romney had and seal the deal for obama. The media is basically a cheerleader for Obama, so now the narrative will shift to how "awesome" this economy is and that Obama deserves credit for it.

My thoughts on the first night of the DNC

As a conservative, I am both impressed and depressed from watching the first night of the Democratic Convention. Wow.

1. The first night was so much more impressive than the RNC. It's as if the democrats are playing in the NFL while the republicans are playing high school football. It was much better organized, dem enthusiasm was through the roof, and the speeches were sharp.

2. Julian Castro knocked it out of the park. Unlike Rubio, who used the speech selfishly to audition for the 2016 presidential election, Castro spent most of his speech making an argument for Obama and against Romney. He drew sharp distinctions between the two candidates with respect to policies.

Post in this thread and I will bump it on 1/1/2016 in time for the WSO 10 year anniversary.

Will you still be on these forums? Will you be finally working in finance? Will you finally be done with finance? Will you realize some of your life goals? Will the world end in 4 months making this thread moot? Will Game of Thrones still be the best show on TV? Will a second term Obama force you to leave the country? We will find out 4 years down the road.

As for me hopefully by 2016 I'm still around to bump this thread.

As a supporter of the ticket, it pains me to say this. But man, this choice was so freaking risky, akin to McCain picking palin but even worse on a fundamental level. I'm convinced that Romney did this out of weakness rather than strength or any political shrewdness.

I have some issues with the Ryan plan, but I admire his courage to tackle these major problems in an intelligent forthright manner. He does add a lot of substance to an otherwise spineless philosophically vacuous Romney campaign. Now it's a BIG election on fundamental questions on the role and limitations of the federal government and its proper relations to the American people. Without a doubt, it's the most important election since Reagan's defeat of Carter in 1980.

Let the Games Begin

With almost exactly 24 hours to go until the start of the 2012 Olympics in London (a mere stones throw from Canary Wharf and perhaps the global heart of derivative trading), the hype on local news is building to fever pitch. The BBC has moved all of its reporting desks to a large glass building with a view over the sprawling Olympic park, the last 2 months have had non-stop coverage of a fairly pointless torch procession and a small grubby cafe in the east end has been forced to change its name (which it has held for nearly 20 years) to Olympi Cafe to avoid any tourists thinking it is an official Games venue...

So, let us put aside all this talk of insider trading, LIBOR manipulation, Sandy Weill's hypocrisy and discuss what really matters; sport.

What should I do this summer?

Hello,
I just finished freshman at Canadian semi-target.
My gpa is probably around 3.7.

My question is what should I do this summer?
This year, I didn't do any jobs or clubs during the school year making my resume blank (Focused too much on academics).
I did not even start applying for internships (most are past due dates now)

How should I start my career?
I'm thinking of taking the CFA Level 1 this summer?
Is this a good start?
I think it will be a good indication towards my interest in finance.
Or is it better to just work at some office as receptionist and earn some money?

P.S. My only past work experience is at McDonalds in high school.

Who do you think is going to win?
WTF is going on with the discipline?

I want the Wings to win, obviously. I don't think I can pick a team that I think is going to win... this is the playoffs, no predicting this.

And wtf is going on with this discipline? Weber grabs Zetterberg's head and smashes it into the board: $2500 fine. NYR rookie with no major penalty ever hits Alfredsson in the face with a less obvious elbow: 3 games.... which isn't so bad when you first look at it, maybe Shanahan just messed up, right?... same game, a Senator just MUGS a Ranger, sucker punching him and then continuing to punch him when he's on the ground for a total of 7 punches: 1 game.... WTF is this?

UBS Investment Research’s report, “US Morning Meeting Highlights”, from January 13th discusses how stocks will be affected from the elections. The analysts are of the opinion that Obama’s victory would have a positive impact on “tech and industrial companies”, whereas the “healthcare, financial, energy and consumer” companies will be negatively influenced due to tougher regulations. A republican victory, on the other hand, could prove to be beneficial for “universal banks, managed care, coal, defense, and high-end consumer stocks”.

Romney's numbers in south carolina have collapsed this week due to his mediocre debate performances and gaffes on his tax returns. Newt meanwhile has surged after his fiery passionate debates. All the polls showing newt winning south carolina tomorrow!

What will be the implications? This means romney would be only 1 for 3 and that 3 different men have won the early states, the first in modern history. Romney's ground game and money is still vastly superior to newt, but this could be a bloodbath. Too late for a jeb bush or someone else to enter the race?

Obama is probably the happiest man right now. He's ready to stay put in 1600 pennsylvania avenue until january 20, 2017.
