Best personal computers for a SA?

Have been using a macbook pro in college which I am about ready to ditch, especially given how useless mac's are for anything finance related.

I will be an IB SA this summer - should all SA's have PC's as their personal computers? Or do you think I could put it off until next year when I (hopefully) start FT? All else equal I would rather put it off until next year so I can set some cash aside this summer and actually get a decent computer, but if its absolutely necessary I wouldn't mind getting one now.

Also - if I should get one now, what are your recommendations? Still on a college budget unfortunately so keep that in mind.

non-target finance & econ undergrad, straight to (current) ms in financial econ non-target. 3.9, no past finance internships, one that was highly analytical with a fair amount of quant work. due to graduate in dec '13. i'm waiting to hear from 15+ SA gigs (all online apps, no OCR). ER is my passion, also applied to IBD because more were available/i'd try lateraling. 2 auto-reject emails, no interviews--mainly middle market and some boutique.

i was offered an investment ops internship for a very well respected MF company that dinged me for a summer associate investment analyst gig (i know my place and that i never had a chance--wanted to get in their pipeline and make a good impression with HR and it worked.)

There are a lot of threads about how to get into FO roles, networking, interview questions/practice and so on.

What if you have landed a role for the summer for a top tech firm (think: Microsoft/Google/Apple as a financial analyst)?

How do you prepare?

Should you reach out to the team you will be working with and see if they are free for drinks/a quick chat over the phone?

Should you reach out to current employees at the firm, asking for any advice they can offer?

Should you chill and wait till its the summer? :)

Apologies in advance if there is an existing thread out there which answers these questions.

Somehow I got an SA position at a great bank in NYC, but I'm not taking either of the mentioned courses until next year (didn't realize importance until it was too late). Is the learning curve going to be impossibly steep? Or does most SA work entail being a bitch who doesn't do much modeling?

Hi all,

I have a call for a 10-15 min interview with a recruiter at Piper Jaffray for their equity research summer analyst position. Since the call is with a recruiter and she mentioned it would be a get to know you type of interview, I was wondering what I should expect. If anyone has any insight on the interview or Piper's Equity Research division in particular it would be appreciated. Thanks!

Phone interview on monday. came out of nowhere, was not expecting this. non-target, 3.8, no IB experience. I have two internships in finance on my resume, one in PWM and one in investment operations, however not many transferable skills. They said it will be a 30 minute phone interview with a director. What can i expect? Technicals?

Freaking out, still in shock I got an IB interview. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi guys- I have been following the site since the fall, but wanted to wait to post a thread until I actually got offers. Quick background- I am from a non-target, but strong LAC school. I am studying abroad in Italy for 3 months starting in mid-February until May. I have two offers so far, one from a top HF (similar to Moore, Tudor, etc) and one from a solid MM IB (since I leave for abroad before their super day they allowed me to do an accelerated interview process). I am also interviewing at other similar MM’s (like Jefferies, Cowen, Stifel) whose superdays, IF I get invited back, would be right before I leave. I was wondering what you guys thought would be the better option for SA.

Hi,

Looking for input on these options, one of which I have an offer, the others which I believe I have an excellent chance. Rothschild and Houlihan would be for their restructuring groups. DB is not group specific. I am interested in both M&A and restructuring, and am currently leaning towards exiting to a distressed debt shop, but obviously that might change.

Thanks for the advice.

Can someone please give me some advice?

I applied for IBD roles across all BB's, elite boutiques, MM firms, Big4 etc - no luck (well - 1 top 3 BB IBD interview - dinged after round 2).

I applied to other large companies/'brand names' for finance/strategy - no luck (my application went through to a big tech firm but they only offer 1 year internships not summer).

I applied to consulting - no luck (landed a top 3 interview but they don't offer internships, they thought I graduated in 2013 by mistake).

I applied to prop trading firms - no luck (landed 1 interview abroad and passed the interview but they were then full!)

I applied to small boutiques for IBD - no luck (they told me to apply to bigger firms given my experience).

I've got a summer analyst offer for a BB in London. Background check is coming soon, just got a few questions!

In England, we do GCSE exams when we are 16, and A-levels when 18. On my application and CV, I misstated my GCSE result.... I said I got X Astars, whereas in fact I got X Astars and 1 A

Is this an issue? Panicking a bit....

My situation: I'm a junior transfer at a non-target with a 4.0 GPA, 3.5 if you combine my pre-transfer GPA with my transfer GPA. I knew I was really interested in IB during the summer but I didn't know much about how to break in until I joined an equity research-related student organization that had some members heading to the street. Using their advice, I started networking in November and so far I've connected with five alumni working as analysts at BB firms.

Let's assume IBD. Of these 'question mark' firms, where would you go for a SA spot. Rank the order in terms of current reputation, job security (or lack thereof), etc.

KBW- recently sold to Stifel
Miller Buckfire- also sold to Stifel
Gleacher- may be up for sale soon and bad morale
RBS- seem to be cutting many IBD operations globally
UBS- recently cut 10,000 and consistently laying people off

You have networked like a ninja. You’ve tapped all connections available. (Or you go to a target school or something of that nature.) You’ve read through WSO, M&I, WSJ, DealBook, and all relevant literature. Through persistence, dedication, etc. you now have an interview. You know how the statements link together; you can walk through a DCF with ease; you know multiple ways to value a company; you know the treasury rates as well as LIBOR; you know what the market is doing and have an opinion on where it is going. Hell, you have even been studying brainteasers. There is no reason you should not be able to knock the interview out of the park right? Wrong! See "The Why Credit Suisse Question"

While technicals are of absolute importance (especially if you are a finance/ accounting major), the fit portion can actually be more difficult. Why? No matter what bb/mm/boutique you go to, a fact will be a fact. There is no mystical way to do a DCF. The bankers will be reading the same publications as you albeit they will have access to some more in depth information. However, culture can be a nebulous lightening cloud set to strike down your hard work at any moment.

Already went once in the summer and once in the fall. I'm really trying to do as much as I can to land a 1st round interview.

I know some of the 1st round interviews and even superdays will have passed by the middle of January, but would it still be worth it to fly back up and touch base with your contacts and keep meeting more people? I'll make sure my story is very polished and be ready for any technicals.

Hi Monkeys,

This might sound stupid, but I have been wondering about it for a while: do you think there would be an "optimal" time to send in my applications for BB SA internships? Most of my deadlines are around mid-January

For those of you who are on the recruiting side of things, is an application sent before Christmas more likely to be put on the back-burner and somewhat forgotten about? Would an applicant have more chances of getting looked over if he send his materials closer to the due date? Or do you feel like applicants who send their materials early demonstrate organization, readiness, etc?

I know my GPA will drop from a 3.59 to around a 3.53 after this semester. All the SA IBD positions are up online on OCR, so should I apply right now with a resume that has a higher gpa or wait till it gets closer to the deadline with an updated resume (lower gpa).

Does it matter when I apply? Will they ask me for an updated resume/transcript once my final grade for this semester come out?
