Vacation before FT Training

So after a lengthy recruiting process I've been very fortunate to receive a FT offer to start at a BB next summer. I always told myself that if I did get an offer I'd take a portion of the signing bonus and go on a trip during the gap between graduation and the start of FT training in July. Have any of you guys done the same thing before you started working? I'm all ears to any suggestions about recommended destinations for me and a few buddies to wreak havoc for a week or two. Naturally I've been thinking Europe but I'm far from a world traveler and would be curious to hear your thoughts. Budget would probably be about 3-4k.

off campus hire? from finance to consulting after graduation

I graduated this may and am working at a hedgefund. During recruiting I felt my temperament was suited for finance but I find the work to be unfulfilling and I would like to be in a position where i can develop business vision/intuition. I think consulting is a better fit for me and ultimately better for my career development.

I will apply as an entry level, not experienced hire position, but since I'm no longer on campus I have to apply online at the company websites. Im wondering whether those resumes are actually read by anyone? And whether the fact I'm out of school make me ineligible for entry level/non experienced positions? if not then is emailing alumni the only ways to get ur resume considered.

Have a few questions about updating resume after graduation

So I just graduated and I want to update my resume. Do I need to change anything to say I graduated? May 2012 was listed, should I remove that? Or change it to "Graduated: May 2012"? Or do something else?

Also, what should I do about GPA? Should I remove it now or leave it? I graduated with a 3.4 cumulative. Not sure how long that needs to stay.

I start work in July.. should I state that I am starting work in July? Or just leave it until I actually start?

Thanks!

could-be-me

Hello all,

I'm a graduating senior without a finance offer. I'm retaking classes in June to raise my undergrad GPA before I get my degree, and will attend grad school in the Fall. I'm doing an MA in Economics to A) give myself another round of recruiting and B) have a respectable transcript.

What relevant work options do I have available for the summer? Assuming I'll be in NYC from July, what are viable alternatives to finding an internship (for the very likely situation that I remain unemployed)?

Thanks

UK grads applying to US graduate schemes

For a UK graduate looking to apply for US graduate schemes (both finance and non finance) how difficult is the Visa process and do firms have a strong US grad preference? My gf is currently doing a one year internship in the US that will finish summer of 2012 and so she is looking to start a permanent job after that.

When I moved I was on an intra company Visa so didn't have to go through any of this, any help and insight would be much appreciated.

I'm a 2009 graduate from a top-five US target who has just completed an Oxbridge master's degree in the social sciences (not econ, though). Due to an interest in international political economy which only really began in the second half of my undergrad career, I'm now applying to jobs in i-banking, equity research, and consulting. I've spent the last two years studying a hot topic (political economy of oil), and ideally I'm looking for a position where I can work in energy or commodities-related investment or risk management.

Hey,

I about to graduate form college pretty soon and therefore, I gotta plan my future well thought out. I have already completed two 3-months internship in the real estate industry (developing and financing), one 3-months and one 4-months internship at a well known Asset Management firm, a three months summer analyst program at a IB boutique and another 10-months junior analyst program at another IB boutique (I'm about to write my BA thesis at this boutique).

Anyway, since I wanna start my career at a bulge bracket, I was wondering whether I could start as a second or third year analyst instead of a first year analyst. What do you guys think? Do you think that this might work out?

At the moment I'm in my final term of my BASc at the University of Waterloo. Recently I discovered that Management Consulting exists, and from what I have read it sounds like an interesting and challenging field to work in. My average going in to this term is 86%, which is one of the highest in my class and from what I have read about applying to management consulting companies it sounds like they will hire people with their bachelor degrees in engineering, but they are looking for people with a demonstrated interest in management consulting. What I anticipate my main problem would be is that there isn't much I can say here other than assuring them that this is in fact a major area of interest for me.

Im a Uk graduate with a 2:1 degree in Economics and a Masters degree in Finance with merit (2:1). How would i go about applying for jobs in the USA. Is there any chance of getting one because of the Visa restrictions. Would the US companies rather take USA graduates to avoid sponsoring visas. Whats the best way of getting from the UK to wall street, Thanks in advance

Hello, I am a rising senior at a non-target university majoring in finance with a 3.82 cumulative GPA and a 4.0 major GPA. I have been networking and building relationships with multiple individuals at some BB/MM firms (JP, Goldman, UBS, Jefferies, Moelis, and D&P). I have also had various finance related internships, but none in investment banking. I have spent time at UBS Private Wealth Management, LPL Financial, and currently doing economic and business analysis (EBA) at Booz Allen Hamilton. I have also taken valuation courses and preparing to take the WSO modeling course. In addition I will be sitting for the CFA Level 1 exam in December.

Finishing school at a non-target in a couple of months. Finance major, 3.6 overall GPA, with a couple of asset management and hedge fund internships, but no banking experience. I ultimately want to get into restructuring, but I know I will not get there at this point. I was wondering if going to law school and studying corporate law would give me a better shot or if its a waste of time/money? I would shoot for banking internships during law school if I did it.

Bad experiences after graduation, chance at master's in finance programs?

Hi,
I graduated in 2007 in engineering. I went to HYP target with about 3.5 GPA and 3.7 Departmental GPA.
I tried a year of graduate school in computer science, didn't like it and dropped out after a year (out of a two year program). I did a summer internship in tech at a bank and received a full time offer. I took two random jobs to pass the time, and got fired from both, and the offer was withdrawn because I got fired and withdrew from my master's program. So my work history is not very good. Since then, I have just travelled around and done random things. I volunteered for a conservation project in Greece (really because I just wanted to go to Europe), and will teach English to a host family in Rome staring mid January for a month or two (again because I want to go back to Europe). I have not done anything serious. In my free time I run some websites as a webmaster and get some money from that, enough to pay off bills and whatever and for some light traveling which is how I've been able to afford the travels.

If You Could Do It All Again...

Moderator Note (Andy): Best of WSO - this post originally went up May 2008 and we thought it deserved to go back on the homepage for those who may have never seen it.

For those of you who have graduated college and gone off to do banking, looking back are you glad that it is something you have done? I have a friend who works at one of Goldman’s top groups and whenever I ask if he’s happy he chose banking he says, “I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think it’s going to lead me where I want to go.”

So for you experienced monkeys, looking back, would you have made the same decision to pursue two years of analyst work?

On that note, do you think it is possible to keep relationships and your health while putting in your two years?
