With natural gas prices at decade lows, companies are switching to natural gas liquids. The economic viability of many shale projects based on gas is now in jeopardy and we are seeing a large shift to the sweet crude and liquid projects.

Natural gas liquids include propane, butane, pentane, hexane and heptane, but not methane and ethane, since these hydrocarbons need refrigeration to be liquefied. These offer great energy sources, higher netback prices and greater profitability.

Encana , one of the biggest natural gas players, is now looking for strategic partners to develop over 1.2 million acres of property they believe to be rich in Natural Gas liquids. This is just one example currently in the industry that is seeing a common shift. As many companies switch from natural gas, to its liquid products the market could see a price adjustment.

I currently don't have a strong stance on the Keystone XL, but thought this was an interesting article on the potential impact:

Net Asset Value “NAV” – Part 1

Net Asset Value is a key component when trying to value an oil and gas company. It is a value of the company based on the production and sale of all of its producing and future producing assets.

As the oil and gas industry grew over the last few decades more companies have made their headquarters in Calgary, alongside that came the growth of financial firms.

With Calgary as a booming location for worldwide investment capital, and a center point for the commodity industry, the future looks promising. There are over 1600 individual oil and gas companies based in the city which means there are a lot of investment deals to be had, and everyone is trying to get a piece of the action.

How to Value Oil & Gas Companies (E&P)

We are all familiar with the three valuation methodologies; discounted cash flows, comparables and ratio analysis, but not all companies in all industries can be valued the same.

Oil and gas companies offer a unique problem of valuation due to their large value based on oil and gas reserves, the same problem is often seen in mining stocks. There is also a large uncertainty in many of the assumptions, such as value and quality of their reserves.

Below are some basic explanations of how E&P, exploration and production, companies are valued;

Republicans Cynical Plan to Force Work to Begin on the Keystone XL Pipeline

There’s cynicism, and then there’s Congress.

In the latest example of dysfunctional Congressional gridlock, the Democratic-led Senate is certain to reject a House of Representatives-passed Republican bill, House Resolution 3630, the 369-page ‘‘Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2011,’’ to extend the payroll tax cut.

The sticking (sticky) point?

Oil - specifically, dirty Canadian oil derived from Alberta’s oil sands, and the Keystone XL pipeline cutting across Middle America to deliver it to Gulf Coast refineries. On 10 November, four days after 12,000 pipeline protestors encircled the White House, President Obama announced "the decision on the (Keystone XL) pipeline permit would be delayed until at least 2013, pending further environmental review.”
