I recently started working at an investment management firm and they are requiring me to submit fingerprints to FINRA. I was wondering how common is it for an undergrad analyst to submit fingerprints? Have others had to get this done as well?

So this is a random question. But can someone compare these two industries. I have an offer from both and I know i should pick the one I like but as a graduating senior who hasn't worked in either industry before I don't know where to start.

What is the pay like moving up the ladder at these industries.
Which one is safer?
If you were me what would you do?
Anything else you can compare? hours? stress? happiness/fulfillment? money?

Obviously I can just take one if I don't like it try to find another job in the next coming months but I'm just curious.

Both of the offers are at small boutiques.

Hey I tried to search the forums but couldn't find a lot of information about sales positions in AM (institutional AM, not Private Banking).

Does anyone know about entry-level positions in this field? What program would you want to get into (not a research position)? Pay, lifestyle, progression? Is it a sales position that has a lot of turnover?

Thanks in advance

Anyone know anything about what the exit opps look like at pension/endowment funds?

Also, how hard is it to break into a pension/endowment fund compared to ER?

I was thinking 40 hour work weeks would be sweet, while studying for the CFA.

Internal Audit at BB vs Big 4

Might seem lame to most but I'm just an accounting type of guy. Could anyone give their 2 cents on audit opportunities in bb vs big 4? In terms of salary and exit opps mostly. Also how does someone land an internal audit job at an investment bank? Most banks aim their recruiting for those trying to get into IBD or AM, S&T etc. They don't really have internships or programs for auditors.

Thanks.

I have a superday interview with a BB AM in a few days. They told me they are looking at 10 candidates during the superday and will make 2 offers. The only time slot that was left was the last one of the day (4:30) so I got stuck with that. Will this put me at an advantage or a disadvantage? I have relevant experience (two summers at two different boutique AM funds) and great ECs, but weak grades (3.2). My worry is they'll make up their minds on the 4 candidates before they go through me and I'll be SOL. On the other hand, I guess they could also remember me better than others as well.

Im currently a senior at a non-target with a low GPA(3.3), Im a double major in accounting and finance and due to the fact that I thought I was going to pursue accounting I never did any relevant internships until this past summer when I did a BB PWM..ive been try to do a good bit of research on here on how to use my shitty background to break into IB/AM/ER(really anything FO outside of PWM) and now ive come to the conclusion its extremely difficult until i get some work experience and go back for an MBA..Ive been trying to use my PWM contacts to network but they seem to be pretty useless, i know whatever job i get will require lots of networking but do you think its possible for me to break in out of UG? Would an MSF be a good idea to give me more time for networking/internships?

Curious to know what the exit opportunities for a Treasury Analyst are. I'm being recruited for such a position at the moment. I am a CFA level 1 candidate, and have a background in equity research, corp fin and consulting.

One of my Father's friends was a big Asset Manager and several top BBs in Europe, and at a point in time we went into an CIO/CTO role (He served 2 officer positions simultaneously)

I've also heard that some people manage to jump from Treasury to IB. The direct promotion fro this role, is Treasury Manger, and they do work on internal M&A.

Most people occupy their entire exit opp mindset with PE or HF...how come few ppl focus on going into traditional AMs like Dodge & Cox, Capital Group or PIMCO after their IB stint? If anything, these places pay more and have better hours than many of the PE places.

How can I talk about my AM SA experience?

I worked at a relatively small, flat AM shop and got a lot of responsibility as an SA. I single handedly wrote 3 buy side research reports on 3 separate companies. Is it a good idea to list the companies in my resume? Something like:

- Wrote comprehensive buy side research reports on Company X (Ticker), Company Y (ticker) and Company Z (ticker)

I know the companies inside and out and am totally comfortable taking questions on them. Should I just pick one or two that I really know and talk about those instead?

- Wrote comprehensive buy side research reports on 3 companies, including Company X, a $XX M payment transaction firm

Which one looks better?

I will finally graduate undergrad in May 2013! It's been a fun journey, and I feel I've done a lot of growing up. I effed around after high school then realized I actually wanted to provide a decent lifestyle for myself and future family, and the hard work needed to get there is more than totally worth it. I will be 27 when I get my BBA in Finance from Texas Tech University.

So here's a question that's on my mind a lot:

How to weigh the importance of getting out there in the job world and getting some real experience versus continuing "formal" education?

Formal education being an MBA, CFA, CAIA, PhD, etc....

Hey Monkey's,

Being the off-topic section I felt it would be appropiate to ask this here

I am going onto my third-year at university and my main goal is to get into high finance, mainly Investment Banking....

However I feel as if an extra stream of money would be beneficial (other than having a day job) so I wanted to get some opinions on Affiliate Marketing or IM (internet marketing)

First off, I'm not a complete newbie to this, I have researched it and like anything in life it obviously isn't easy money, but it is a hell of a lot more convinient than operating a ebay business or what not (at least that's what I think)

age factor recruiting.jpg

Hey guys -- I'm a current junior at an HBCU (Morehouse-Hampton-Howard) and I took three years off before going to college. At the time, I was a big dummy & didn't know what I wanted to do after high school. Held a bunch of odd jobs until going back at 21 years old. I will graduate in the spring of 2014.

I'm 24 years old now.
If I get a SA offer next summer, I'll be 25 years old.
If I get a FT offer after graduation, I'll be 26 years old.

Will IBs hold that against me being 4 years older than most recruits? Or do they not care about age? Or should I just not mention it? I look youthful enough to pass for a college sophomore but, I'm sure questions will come up when they see a 1988 birth date.

Hey guys,

I was wondering how would you compare M&G Investments internship vs BB (Citi, DB, BAML) internship?

They hire a couple of interns throughout the year and I was wondering if they would stand out on my resume better than job at BB.

(I assume that I would be doing a front office job at both, at the local office)

Any opinions generally on M&G would be appreciated, I couldn't find any discussion on WSO about them. They are aroud #35 and #40 in the European Hedge Funds rankings.

Thanks!

The IB to PE route is well documented and pretty straight forward in terms of career progression, pay, etc...

How about the career path of a product develpment role?
I'm assuming its similar to marketing/investor relations in a sense?

Not sure how I'd spin that to make AM "right" for me, but it is what I'm interested in.

After my MFE in an European school, I did one year internship in a BB S&T division, within structuring team and sales team. In the end, the company said they are not able to give a full-time offer in S&T due to market condition, but I can consider joining the PWM division where headcounts are not so tight, I accepted.

comments on PWM jobs here on wso and anyother financial career website really make me worried. It seems that you don't need financial knowledge to succeed in PWM while network is much much more important. It's quite different from my original plan, as I am highly interested in derivatives/ technical stuff and I'm not from a family with many connections.
