Nice moment for America, cool moment for real estate.

http://www.businessinsider.com/live-watch-as-the-s...

Construction crews are currently placing the final part of the spire on top of Manhattan's One World Trade Center.

The pieces are being lifted to a temporary work platform right now, and will be installed upright at a later date.

Once the spire tops the lower Manhattan building, it will measure a symbolic 1,776 feet—a patriotic reference to the year the Declaration of Independence was signed—making it the new tallest skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere.

The first part of the spire was lifted into place in December.

It is no news that the American educational system, in general, has been in trouble. The average American student is known to show poorer test score, higher dropout rate, and lower literacy rate compared to the global benchmark. Recently, Louis Menand wrote an opinion on the New Yorker regarding abolishing homework in schools. Does homework give kids with rich and smart parents an unfair advantage by receiving help from them? The answer to that question really depends on which direction the American people want their educational system to go as Menand points out:

Like a lot of debates about education, what Cooper calls “the battle over homework” is not really about how to make schools better. It’s about what people want schools to do.

I've got two midterms on Monday that I've waited until the last minute to study for, so that obviously means I need to go off on a tangent.

The more time I spend going to school and/or reading about current events, the more I get the impression that America and Wall Street is never going to return to what many Americans refer to as "normal."

My question for all of you, is where do you see things heading in the 21st century for America? Are we completely screwed, or is this another bump in the road? If the economy ever does return to "normal," will Wall Street ever be the way it used to be?

The way I see it:

Pros:

Skirts in Finance: Why Does Bankerella Hate America?

Those of you who follow our friends over at Wall Street Oasis may have recently seen a post by a ‘female banker’, who goes by Bankerella. She recently posted a blog about dating different finance guys, which has garnered some attention lately for ‘the Wall Street women’.

The verdict from our resident Skirt?:

Bankerella isn’t real. And judging by the replies to her post, those in the finance community have realized this. The non-finance community loves any chance to villianize or label us—men or women—as narcissists or sociopaths, but the Bankerella posts may be a bit too perfect. Here are the giant mistakes in her post, that every #WIF newbie and veteran knows and noticed almost immediately, that made it obvious Bankerella is either fake or delusional:

I thought about trying to write something serious here today, but, I just couldn't. I'm sitting in the sun crushing beers and I just can't bring myself to think about something serious like what the hell is going on in Europe or any other financial news. What I was thinking about, though, is What is your go to food/beer/event on July 4th?

Some people crush the lake in boats and other simply sit in their backyard with the family and enjoy life without work for a day. What say you guys, especially those that live in large cities. Do you leave for the day? Something that always made me wonder. Anyway, Happy July 4th to everyone and hope you drink plenty of Budweiser and Hot Dogs. Oh, and let's all hope Joey Chestnut sets another record on Coney Island today.

Will The Downgrades Make Banks More Risky?

Will The Downgrades Make Banks More Risky?

Following the downgrade by Moody's, the big Wall Street banks are now split into the A rating (GS & JPM) and Baa (MS, BAC and C). This downgrade will increase the collateral requirements of all banks and also mean the huge amount of derivatives in the global markets are more likely to involve GS and JPM than the other 3.

Will these combined effects mean that the lower rated banks are in danger of being under capitalized and the higher rated be over exposed to derivatives?

Will these downgrades have any effect on those of you applying to banks in terms of future job security?

This is an interesting problem that the U.S. government faces. There are a large amount of spies attempting to steal information from U.S. universities and research institutions for both commercial reasons and militaristic reasons. In response, it seems that government agencies and universities are cooperating to combat this. In addition to this, foreign intelligence services are trying to recruit American students while they are studying abroad.

Interestingly enough, both the universities I have attended were also attended at some point by radical Islamic terrorists (one was arrested while I was there), and I know universities have been on the lookout for potential Islamic terrorists for some time.

Has anyone ever encountered something like this at their Undergrad, Business school, or Study Abroad?

On 7 October 2001, the opening phase of "Operation Enduring Freedom" U.S. military campaign began, which quickly drove the Taliban and its al-Qaida affiliates from Kabul on 12 November.

Since then, 1,760 U.S. troops have been killed in Afghanistan along with 942 International Security Assistance Force soldiers, a total of 2,702 foreign military dead, with no end in sight.

In a March 2008 article Richard Holbrooke, then a foreign policy adviser in Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, coined the term “Af-Pak” in an article to describe the broader regional context of military operations in Afghanistan, acknowledging that in order to win in Afghanistan, Pakistan to the east must be pacified as well.

As noted by Richard Heinberg on June 22nd, 2011, the media has lacked the ability to connect the economic situations in the Middle East and their uprisings to what is happening in Europe. I would avoid the word “Revolution” in the case of the Middle Eastern uprisings, seeing as no dramatic systemic changes have taken place, only the ousting of dictators. Same as I would avoid the words of social upheaval in the case of European protests, which have been quite calm and only demanding to maintain the social safety nets produced through years of labor struggle. Rather, the odd occurrence is the ostensibly quiet population of the United States who are in many cases having the same economic problems and austerity based government solutions.

The past two decades since the 1991 collapse of Communism have seen the Russian Federation and the U.S. involved in an updated version of the 19th century’s “Great Game’ for mastery in Eurasia over the debris field of the former USSR.

Not surprisingly, Moscow regards its former colonial fiefdoms as part of its “near abroad,” a “Monroeskii Doktrin” variant of U.S. interest in Central and Latin American, where a priori interests rule.

U.S. interests in the post-Soviet Eurasian space since 1991 have fixated first on the region’s immense but underdeveloped energy resources, while the post-9/11 environment added a second dimension – military bases, handily useful for monitoring both the Russian bear and a rising China.

Late Sunday evenings almost always feel the same way.

All the quality shows/games have already ended at this point and this slow feeling of dread starts to come over you as the start of the new work week slowly begins to kick in the closer bedtime comes.

But on this particular Sunday evening around 9:45PM something unusual came out of the blue.

“Breaking News: President to make unusual press conference at 10:30PM EST

I immediately thought to myself how strange that announcement was. Typically press conferences are announced several hours in advance in order to ensure all the White House press corps can plan their schedules accordingly and are almost never done so late on a Sunday evening as neither the press corps nor a large audience is usually on hand.

It's a classic peasant mentality: going into fits of groveling and bowing whenever the master's carriage rides by, then fuming against the Turks in Crimea or the Jews in the Pale or whoever after spending fifteen hard hours in the fields. You know you're a peasant when you worship the very people who are right now, this minute, conning you and taking your shit. Whatever the master does, you're on board. When you get frisky, he sticks a big cross in the middle of your village, and you spend the rest of your life praying to it with big googly eyes. Or he puts out newspapers full of innuendo about this or that faraway group and you immediately salute and rush off to join the hate squad. A good peasant is loyal, simpleminded, and full of misdirected anger.

- Matthew Taibbi

I can still clearly remember back to my earlier analyst years, as much as I often do my best to forget about two of the most abusive, underappreciated, tiresome years that I had to endure immediately after my college years, years in retrospect I had wished I had spent less time worrying about .1 differences in GPA, the amount of technical knowledge I had for interviews, and spent more time on things that are clearly luxuries today: a large number of young, fun-loving, beautiful girls in one place; irresponsible, memorable nights with friends, and copious amount of time to recover and sleep.

Maybe this topic is not appropriate for WSO as The Street is known for attracting workaholics. Still I have to ask the question, do you guys really want to be working well into your 70's?

According to this Economist article that is precisely the sort of decision many of you will eventually have to make. With dwindling populations in the West and the need to prop up the ponzi planet of state funded pensions, Europe is allegedly looking at a retirement age of 70 by the year 2040, with America at a purported smidgen lower.

Is the US Government Machiavellian enough to orchestrate the recent brouhaha over the so-called website WikiLeaks, is this a real embarrassment, or will it indeed be damaging as some U.S. diplomats claim?

I am not one to support conspiracy theories but when you stop to analyze the content of the information that was leaked it seem that two things emerge: first, the content of the cables were not so earth shattering as to damage national security, or harm Washington’s relations with other countries.

Second, upon further analysis, it would appear that the information revealed instead sends a strong message to America’s foes.

I trust you've been watching the US dollar

In the last three months, the USD has fallen overall, including against the EUR, JPY and GBP. it's tanking. It's around 1 EUR per 1.39 USD.

I don't think I'm alone in expecting that despite this, America's trade balance, unemployment, manu etc... figures won't change much over the upcoming months. So much for all the commotion over currency manipulation/intervention

But iIm particularly looking at the USD/AUD exchange rate, 'cos it is heading towards parity, a monumental milestone. And sums up pretty well the differences in fortune between America and Australia.

Any bets on when that will happen?

Or what else the USD will do?

Andy note: "Blast from the past - Best of Eddie" - This one is originally from Sep. 2010. If there's an old post from Eddie you'd like to see up again shoot me a message.

Yesterday's conversation about who is rich was so interesting that I thought I'd take today to explore who is poor, and what it means to be poor in America these days. Just so we're all operating with the same figures, here is the latest U.S. poverty index. The data concludes that the poverty line for 2010 is an annual income of $22,000 for a family of four. A greater number of Americans live below the poverty line now than at any time in the 51-year history of U.S. poverty statistics (but not the greatest percentage).

We touched on this yesterday, and I commented (admittedly with little frame of reference) that $22,000 seemed pretty high, especially in relation to the $50,000 median U.S. family income rate. So I did some research and found some pretty fascinating facts about what it means to be "poor" in America.

Who is rich? This is the perennial question in any progressive tax scheme. Where you draw the line makes a big difference to a lot of people. With the sun about to set on the Bush tax cuts, the debate is raging online, and I wanted to find out what you guys think. First, the preliminaries:

Those people making $250,000 a year or more seem to be the targeted income level to be considered "rich" in America. But they'd be the first to tell you that they're not. Two recent news pieces have the debate raging. The first was written by a Chicago law professor. I guess it was so incendiary that the original piece was taken down, but you get the gist from the above link. Even at $455,000, the good prof is barely making ends meet.

September 11th.

Worthy of it's own paragraph and place in American history. On par with Pearl Harbor, Gettysburgh and the Constitutional Convention...perhaps in time...above them all.

A day which we paid verbal attention but never adequately addressed. Having traveled much of the world I find that we Americans are a unique subgroup of the human race. We have experienced so many blessings and been served with so many gifts that we and we alone are compelled to go to extraordinary lengths to suppress our own losses and tragedies. Not surprisingly it has taken a year short of decade for much of that anger and frustration to pour out.

With the economy trudging and sludging along, every self appointed expert has rushed to judgment and prophecy. Now, the press is even reporting on how they're not at fault . Comedy has a way of taking the strangest form. But let's take a step back and think about metaphysics.

The word affluence comes from the root word "affluere", meaning "to flow to". The actual word affluence means "to flow in abundance". In reality, money is just a symbol of the life energy we exchange with life on a daily basis. A way to keep score, some would say.

I have been learning more and more about DCF's and other valuation models lately and have two questions that I can't find answers for.

1. Why is weighted average cost of capital used and not marginal cost of capital? Wouldn't marginal cost of capital be more representative of the actual cost?

2. Are capital expenditures ever broken out into maintenance capex and growth capex? This would leave maintenance capex to still be subtracted out of fcf, but growth capex would stay in fcf because the company could choose to use it to repay debt/declare dividends.

I would appreciate your thoughts on the above.

If America was a fine maiden, one as pretty as our nation is strong, would she now be in the twilight of her career? At 234 years of age, her face would no doubt show signs of ageing. She’d be slightly bruised and scratched up from a couple of recent cat fights – she doesn’t let shit slide, this America - but all in all, still in good fighting shape. Newly-formed bags under her eyes could be attributed to a bit of a recent rough patch; depression and anxiety prone, she struggles to maintain balance in a rapidly changing world. Problems she’s got a-plenty, from the financial to the medical. One amorphous black mass in particular, a mole of sorts, could really use a looking-at.

 • Hi there, I'm a rising sophomore at a top 3 school, and this question concerns my course selection for next semester. I'm a social-sciency person. I'm okay with math but not great nor interested in it. I know that for consulting (or life in general) the more quantitative my...

I work as a long/short equity analyst at a large hedge fund. I've been lucky enough to be more than just a model monkey early on in my career, but have also been exposed to the stress of being measured on returns. I primarily cover consumer and TMT names. I went the typical path (target...

Mod note: Best of Bankerella - this was originally posted 10/1/12 I occasionally get PMed by people at colleges I’ve never heard of before, asking if they have a shot at IBD. Folks, why IBD? The finance world is broad and varied, and there are a million ways to...
