Should I bring work I've written (on my own time) regarding the markets to my interview for Private Banking?

Hi guys:

I write (for myself) market recap newsletters covering overall market conditions and news for fun (pathetic... I know). Is this something that I should bring to my private banking interview?

Thank you!

Hi guys, I received an email from JP with the aforementioned subject inviting me to an on-site 1 hour interview.

My question is the following: I have already interviewed with the entire team at this location for the role under consideration, so is there a reason as to why they would need to have another interview? Is this what people call a "Superday?"

Also, what can I expect at such an interview if I've already had on-site interviews?

I'd really appreciate some feedback regarding this matter.

Thank you!

Hi everyone,

I apologize in advance for how lengthy this post might end up. WSO has been very helpful to me the past several years in pursuing my passion for a career in finance, specifically investment banking at the analyst level. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to quite secure that FT offer following graduation (just graduated) and I was hoping to get some candid advice here.

Long story short: Complete non-target, but very good credentials all-around - graduated Magna Cum Laude, had an internship at the completion of every college year, including an IB internship during a winter and a boutique IB internship this past summer. I was heavily involved in school, and my resume screams leadership and passion for finance/IB, and demonstrated success wherever I've gone.

Hi monkeys,

I will soon be joining BAML IBD for a grad position in London.
Do you know how the flexible benefits program looks like? Especially, is a private health insurance a part of that, and does the bank pay for it?
Unfortunately, the BAML helpdesk could not give me specific information.

Thank you guys

Many younger people are looking to buy real estate with the current rates being so low. How much of a mortgage should a junior level analyst (1yr - 3rys) take out for a house/apartment?

I'm just curious to know if anyone has bought a house at a young age and what kind of changes it has brought on in their lives. It would be nice if you could share your salary range and the size of your mortgage (if you feel ok sharing that obviously)

All experiences, stories and opinions are welcome...

Brief background: I am a rising junior at an ivy and recently decided to major in Financial Economics. I haven't taken very many finance-related courses yet because of my late declaration of the major, and so I am wondering what classes I should take this Fall '13 and Spring '14 semester in order to make myself most competitive.

By the end of the Spring '14 term I'm planning to have completed Intro to Econometrics, Financial Economics, Financial Accounting, Statistics w/Calculus, and one or two other upper level Econ electives (in addition to Micro and Macro).

Movin' up the chain, networking with an Analyst

Alright, so recently I had an informational interview with an analyst for about 45 minutes.

How can I go about asking him for referrals to maybe an Associate/VP/MD? I don't want to sound pushy, but I want to talk with more senior people, because, let's face it, analysts have no pull on who gets offers and interviews.

Any advice is appreciated! :)

Any advantages to networking with an Analyst?

Is there generally any advantages to networking with Analysts? The only advantage I see is if you hit it off with them, they can refer you to an Associate, VP, or MD. So, essentially, to work your way up the ladder.

I know at smaller boutiques, Analysts are the ones that review resumes and make the shortlist, but is it the same at BB's as well?

If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks and God Bless!

The following is an interview with tt1254, an analyst who quit and started his own fund. He is also available to answer your questions, ask away.

Are you a professional and want to do an interview? View our interview template here and then email me your responses to [email protected]

  1. Tell us a little bit about yourself:
  2. Recent graduate from undergrad who started an equity fund after a year or so in s&t at a bb. Was ultimate goal since second year of undergrad and having interned in m&a, s&t, pe, realized investing in public markets best fit. First stock buy was VV (same as SPY) on Sept 1st, 2008.

  3. What experience/class in school best prepared you to start your own fund?
  4. Econ 101 – less about supply/demand curves and more about incentives that drive human behavior. Psych 101 is a close second.

Hi guys:

I received an email from J.P. Morgan inviting me to a 1st round phone interview this week.

My question is, what does it mean that this position is "off-cycle"?

Does this mean the hiring process will be faster than a regular "in-cycle" interview process that normally occurs later in the year?

Does this mean they need a replacement ASAP?

Thank you!

Came across an analyst position in asset management division of PE division of pension fund and I am unsure if this role is MO/FO and also what kind of role this is. If you guys can give me some insight, I would appreciate!

This position is responsible for monitoring portfolio cash flows and has the authority to request and distribute up to an authorized limit as a result of capital calls, expense payments, dividend, currency hedge cash inflows/outflows, interest, etc.

The successful incumbent will support and coordinate new deal funding, support investment, legal and financial structuring, monitor investment and pool performance, prepare performance information and commentary for reports, and construct and monitor risk proxies, and liaise with the Risk group.

Technology

Developing cutting-edge technology is integral to the success of Barclays. As we conclude deals, transfer information and communicate with clients across time zones and continents, we need to constantly evolve to become quicker and more efficient. We operate in a fiercely competitive arena, and our technology strategy is entirely business-driven.

What are some entry level/intern analyst positions for recent grads?

After doing some more research, working as an analyst seems more interesting than other options at present. Having graduated in December ... what are some entry level or intern positions that are realistically obtainable for a 3.5+ GPA student.

After speaking to several people, getting an analyst internship with one of the large IB's is unlikely because those positions are held for juniors/seniors.

I couldn't participate in any of those largely being in the hospital during those years of my college experience.

What should I be searching for and where should I be searching? Is the entry level analyst called a junior analyst?

Hey All,

I would like to get a discussion going on the true value of Middle Office Careers specifically Finance (Treasury, Strategy,Product Control), and Risk Management at a BB. Some people prefer these types of roles and honestly, Its the best they can get (non-target). Just want to get some insight on the Pay progression, Career ops, and B-School prospects as they are usually discussed briefly and much of the data is dated.

I know analysts usually start at 65-70k, 10k sign-on, and 5-20% bonus

Can They achieve 250k all-in at the VP Level?

Now, most of the posters on WSO aren’t managing anyone yet or even have anyone below them on the totem pole for at least a few years, but those that will (or have) may benefit from this post. There are literally hundreds of threads talking about how to deal with bosses and colleagues but rarely do you find one discussing how to treat those beneath you.

More importantly, it’s probably going to happen sooner than you think. Unfortunately, I’ve seen even the BEST analysts fail and make countless mistakes when managing down while they have no problem with managing up. We’re so used to sucking up and playing politics as the lowest guy on the totem pole that we have no idea what to do when a wide-eyed 20-21 year old is thrust into our cubicle by the staffer.

3) Could you describe a typical day on the job?

There isn't really a typical day on the job, but I'll take you through my Wednesday:

8:15-8:45 - Get settled, read some news, have a coffee, catch up on Dealbreaker...basically nothing productive
8:45-9:30 - Made some updates to a model we are providing to our buy side client on one of their targets.
9:30-11:45 - Work on a CIM for a sell side client
11:45-12:00 - Pick up lunch with the other analysts
12:00-1:30 - Update the financials in a different CIM
1:30-3:00 - Make marketing calls for a client we just took to market. I get allocated the crappiest targets and the Director and VP on the deal take the rest. Mostly get voicemails, send out follow up emails and update the CRM.
3:00-4:00 - Phone interviews for SA program
4:00-6:00 - More CIM writing
6:00-7:00 - Listen in on a conference call between a client and a potential buyer going over unaudited year end financials
7:00-8:00 - Type up notes from call and create an info request list for our client
8 pm - VP tells me to go home because I'm pretty sick

Below is the first installment of an interview with WSO Certified User and 2nd year banking analyst 'duffmt6'. Interview conducted by Asatar.

SEE PART 2

1) What is your background and how did you get into investment banking?

I graduated from a top 25-30ish school in 2010 in a quantitative business major (the quantitative portion hurt my GPA a bit - I finished with a 3.65). I had literally no career focus throughout my college career. I was focused on school work, partying and rugby, and not in that order. I lucked into a back office finance internship in my junior year with a well known fin services company through a connection (my cousin) and got a verbal return offer. My senior year I basically missed the boat on full time recruiting, not that I would have landed anything anyways. I interviewed for one consulting position and got destroyed (didn't even know what a case interview was). At that point I had very little concept of what investment banking was - only a couple of my close friends were going into finance and no one in my family was even remotely connected to the industry. I ended up accepting a position in financial control with the company I interned at.

What to do with signing bonus?

Given that the incoming analyst class is getting ready to start in a few months, I am wondering what everyone is using their signing bonuses for. Personally I have wanted to do some traveling and catching up on hobbies that I have neglected the past few years, but not to sure if this would be the best use of the money. I have roughly 10k in student loans, and it may to start paying those off and work on getting a trading account started up.

What are everyone else's thoughts on how to allocate the bonus? For those of you who are analysts and beyond, what did you you use the money for and do you have any regrets?

I'm fairly new to the world of sell side research (less than 5 years as an analyst), and I had my first major blow up in 2012. Wanted to walk through the perspective from the sell-side.

Background

I have a pretty good read on one of my companies and have been able to call it long or short for awhile. Data points were again particularly negative on the quarter. I pushed multiple clients short (probably something like 5m-10m shares combined) into the close of the quarter. On my earnings preview my sales traders pushed an additional few hundred k short.
