I'll just be honest and straightforward.

EDIT**at least one applicant has an offer**

I am from a non-target. I superday-ed at a top AM firm this past Friday (PIMCO/BlackRock/etc.). This firm is my number one choice and they know it. During my superday, the guy literally said "i would ask you why ABC Firm, but I can just tell from your resume and research you've done on the company which is pretty cool".

Superday interviews went well. But they kind of felt like this: You know how you cannot tell a girl you like her? You almost have to play hard to get? I didn't say ABC Firm was my top choice, but it was pretty

Just try and watch this without laughing. New York restaurants are no strangers to pimping outrageous dishes to garner attention, but I think this one is going to backfire. A $150 Kobe beef hamburger? Yeah, I can almost see that. But a $2,000 plate of spaghetti (which doesn't even include a bottle of wine)? C'mon, bro. Just keep in mind, kids, that in 2006 first-year analysts would've been knocking each other over to order this monstrosity. Bon appetit:

I haven't talked to my best friend of 7 years for almost 2 years because we got into a fight over him not being able to drive somewhere. Stupidest reason ever and I've been thinking about how dumb it really was. Reason being, he just went into the marines after turning down a scholarship to NYU and I don't know how I would react if I were to find out something bad happened to him over there.

What about you guys?

CompBanker!!!!!!!!

So, for a side project in an analytics club I am in, I decided to use some statistical measures to evaluate the monkeys here on WSO. I took the top 250 monkeys and calculated 10 different metrics, each with their own point total and ranked them accordingly.

At the end of my statistical analysis, CompBanker was the winner by a decent margin. I will not disclose any further information for certain reasons (privacy etc) but I might be willing to tell you your ranking...for the right price (JK).

Also, I may publish the top 5 or top 10. Still deciding.

Anyway, take this however you want but I found it to be incredibly accurate. And once again, Congrats CompBanker.

In banking, you look forward to getting a job in a hedge fund or pe...so then what?

Casino Jack

I just saw Casino Jack the other night (the movie with Kevin Spacey, not the documentary). For those who are not familiar with the film, it tells the story of Jack Abramoff, a famed Washington DC lobbyist who served a 4-year prison term for fraud and bribery.

This was the 3rd time I've been exposed to the culture of American lobbyists though media... the other two were the film Thank You for Smoking and John Grisham's "The Broker". I've also heard somewhere that after putting in a short stint in government, recent college grads from elite schools can walk over to "K-Street", DC's center for lobbying firms and think-tanks, and literally make millions.

I accepted a 1st year analyst position starting on June 2011 in Charlotte and just came across a SICK bachelor pad. It's a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom that is right next to the Bank of America building and is a 10 minute walk to Wells Fargo. It's 2 stories on the top floor of a skyscraper, has floor to to ceiling windows, and a huge balcony.

The penthouse will be 1700 each, but I've been able to negotiate prices pretty well in the past. Given its length on the market and other real estate statistics, I believe I can talk the price down to about 1500/1600 each.

Baller

This is just for fun, but I hear these 3 terms thrown around. Just wanted to get people's opinions. How would you rank them, which would you want to be and any examples you can think of / characteristics of each?

I think it is

1. Baller
2. Player
3. Hitter

Baller - young type, parties a lot, lots of money, fast cars, chicks
Player - older, more established, corporate jet is chump change
Hitter - someone on the rise, 3rd yr associate

What do you Monkeys think?

So I was having dinner with my brother the other night and he said that, with him just a few months away from hitting 40, he thinks it’s about time he enjoyed himself and get a fun, new, set of wheels.

“Haha! Isn't this a decade too early to have your dumbass mid-life crisis?” I said, but after obtusely flipping me the bird, he asserted that having worked hard most of his life and with no wife and kids to worry about yet, he might as well have some fun and treat himself to something nice.

Wait, back up. How is this related to Wall Street? Well… With bonuses supposedly at a record, you’d probably have this problem when you get to VP anyway, and if you’re a trader probably sooner, so this is sort of a prep. (Unless of course you’re the real deal like AJ and the boyz, then go ahead and buy a Porsche ASAP.)

Ambition

WSO just hit 40,000 members and the last time I checked (minus the trolls and a few odd d-bags) you will probably find some of the most intelligent, entrepreneurial, and ambitious people the world has to offer, all in a single community.

The countless threads on exit ops, interview preps, school advice, and ballertude confirms this but what I find rare is what you want to make of your careers in finance.

The career path threads for Equity Research, Hedge Funds, and S&T always stop at PM. For the bankers it’s getting into Private Equity and then ends at making Partner.

We’ve already discussed whether you’re stiffs or players, and we’ve gathered that you’re in the latter. But true players have far loftier agendas than just making it to PM or partner.

What do you want to do from there?

What path to take to become a true "baller?"

While most of the forums on WallStreetOasis talk about getting a job in IB/Trading, few posts talk about how to outshine the rest of the Monkeys one you're there.

What I'm really curious about is what happens between the time a new trader/banker enters the firm until people know his name? Or until he becomes the next Boaz Weinstien etc? Is there a clear path? Luck?

I think plenty of us are smart, and want money, so can we collectively talk about how to get to the optimum level of "baller" in the fastest amount of time? I use the word baller to illustrate the idea of a young finance type, sub 40, who makes 5-10M a year, not to mean a douche. I mean the type of 35 year old who "closes deals."

This was an interesting peice I ran across today. It's silly to think that when most of use were 19 we were working a part time job and getting drunk and this kid is creating companies.

There is little doubt in my mind that he will obtain great wealth in the near future and it will be interesting to watch...with envy, lol.

How do we monkeys define 'baller status'?

When we make analyst and get that first bonus? When we make VP? When we make KKR? Or maybe it's when we realize we're wearing a $25K watch and cruising to work in a BMW 760li?

I've read plenty of threads on this forum asking questions along the lines of "which desk is most profitable/more desired/"baller"/allows me to start a supertight hedge fund in X years/prestigious/has the best upside and opportunities etc".

The answer is NONE of them and ALL of them. By far the most important thing to consider are what are YOUR interests and particular skillset, then target appropriate desks. There is no point joining what half this forum thinks is a "baller" desk at GS (i.e. GSPS) when you are neither 1) interested in equities/credit 2) have little ambition to do balance sheet analysis/valuation. I did a rotations with them last yr on the summer programme and thought it was one of the most boring places on the floor.
