UW a TL vs bridging a bond?

Hi - quick question. Was listening to some of my MD's speak on this subject and I wanted to know - is there a specific difference in terms of both process, and risk?

Obviously if after underwriting a TLB, no one wants to buy it - you're stuck with 300mm in paper. Is this the same idea for bridging a high yield issue?

Thank you in advance (and please don't hesitate to tell me I'm completely wrong if so)

Appropriate IB hairstyle?

So, I want to know an appropriate hairstyle for investment bankers. I, generally, like to spike my hair up, but I'm not sure if that is appropriate in the IB world; here's a link of my hairstyle:

http://cdn.crushable.com/files/2009/10/khphotos173...

Look at the guy in the picture. Obviously, that's not a picture of me, but of someone with a similar hairstyle.

I know some of you are probably thinking, "What the fuck kinda question is this?" I know it's quite a dumbass question to ask, but I know bankers are anal about the smallest shit; so I don't want to standout for my hairstyle.

If this is not appropriate, please let me know what styles are appropriate for bankers.

Thanks for all your help guys, and God Bless!

i want to break into IB but major banks do not do OCR at my school in January-Feb when the resume due dates and interviews are. If i go to their website career section, they simply say to check with your school career center for dates. How can i still apply and make sure I am considered for the position?

I've got a summer analyst offer for a BB in London. Background check is coming soon, just got a few questions!

In England, we do GCSE exams when we are 16, and A-levels when 18. On my application and CV, I misstated my GCSE result.... I said I got X Astars, whereas in fact I got X Astars and 1 A

Is this an issue? Panicking a bit....

I just went to their site and they're offering a "slim" line for their suits. Goes for $270. Now during their promotions where they give you basically 2 extra free suits, shirts, ties, etc.. Is this not a good deal?

If you're buying a slim suit for $270, you can go to a decent tailor to put in some upgrades. Then you can also do the same for the suits and shirts. Anyone buy from them?

Niall Ferguson has said the European Union (EU) is a perfect prophet for the weak willed Pro-Europeanists, often anxious academic personalities, trapped in their verbal formulas extracted from post-modern schools of Marxist thought, to be perennially defeated by circumstance; namely economic. They offer a self-exculpating cosmic explanation for the most normal professorial state of popular resentment, alienation, dithering passivity and inaction on the party of Brussels's bureaucrats and their own sovereign messes.

Beyond all of that though is another ivory tower; the European Central Bank (ECB).

Is it possible to "over network" with a particular office?

I'm interested in working FT at a BB in a regional office that is fairly small (around 30 people) with about 10 analysts. The school I go to is a regional target so we have a few alumni there and I've met a few people at the firm already. I've had drinks with 2 analysts, coffee once with another 2 analysts, and met an analyst at an info session. I've also had a call with a VP at the firm earlier. One of the analysts I got drinks with said he could set me up with some other analysts that I haven't met yet and aren't alumni. I'm just wondering if I'm being too keen and may be "over networking" with this one office. Should I focus on the people I know now or should I try and meet all the analysts/associates I can?

I'm currently an SA at a boutique IB firm who's summered in NYC the past two summers; lived in NJ for a long time before settling in different a suburb of a metropolitan area the past 10 yrs or so (permanent home).

I've always had this idea NYC or bust, and while I still have that for the couple few years after finishing school I've started having different outlooks. I met some true southern people over the summer and it got me thinking again what if I moved to somewhere in the south in the future? Somewhere like a Texas?

Besides the obvious stereotypes, what is your opinion on the Southern parts of the US? I've lived in the east coast, well developed parts all my life. What drastic changes might I face? Also, will me being non-Caucasian hurt me in some ways? (serious question)

Any thoughts.

love banking.jpg

Been doing m&a / ECM for 2 years and am one of the few analysts who absolutely loves it. For example:

  • get a kick when I get a complex model working / make something from scratch
  • absolutely killer when seniors take me out for a client meeting and I get to exchange business cards and contribute to client discussions
  • love it when I get praised by VPs/MDs for being a 'good guy' and 'sharp'
  • feel great when I need to teach / explain stuff to interns and new joiners (no arrogance, treat them with complete respect)
  • love seeing the new analyst / intern class every year - smartest graduates in the country, all willing to give everything to succeed (though quite a few give up in 6months)
  • enjoy working with lot of different teams in banks to meet more and more TypeA people, see how they react to situations and how they operate in life in general
  • love networking all the time and increasing my contact base

Is this weird? For me it's hard to imagine life outside the bank / finance industry anymore in general...

I had a super day with a bulge bracket bank in new York in February. I didnt end up getting an offer. They paid for my airfare but they also gave me a form to fill out if I wanted them to reimburse for meals and other transportation. That day, I paid for a taxi and a few meals. I haven't submitted my receipts or the form yet. Would it look bad if I sent in the reimbursement stuff now since its more than a month later? There was no deadline on the forms.

Hi all,

I'm starting full-time as an associate (S&T) at a bank early June. (If you are starting in July, I can probably scrape by with the expectation that you will move in beginning of July). I am a single male in his mid 20s. Studio rent is looking pretty steep in the $2500-$3000 range (and inventory is thin), while 1BR rent is looking much more reasonable at around $3000-$3500.

I'm looking for a single (as in one person) roommate for a 1BR June lease in Battery Park (buildings such as Tribeca Pointe, 22 River Terrace, Liberty Court, Riverwatch, etc.). My price range is between $1500-$2000.

I have a superday this week with the Securities division of GS. It is for a sophomore program, and I am from a non-target school. I posted a few weeks back in a different forum but didn't get a lot of responses. After searching around I couldn't find anything extremely close to my situation, so I wanted to see if anyone had any additional advice or information since this is my first superday.

Also, if anyone else has been invited to this superday maybe we could get a group and get dinner or something after to discuss how things went.

Thanks!

So this may be a silly question, but I have no idea so I am going to ask you guys. I have a small bank from my home town that I use, but I want to use a bigger bank that is widespread in NY for when I start working. I waited until I got a job because I thought that if I got a job a JPMorgan, I would get a Chase account, and if it were Citi I would get a Citibank account, etc. I thought it might not look that great if I worked at Citi and had a Chase bank account, etc.

But I am going to be working at Goldman, so what bank do you guys recommend me using? Preferably one that has an ATM somewhere close to 200 West St

Ok, so you guys have read me ranting on the subject of physical labor and commodity related endeavors for a while now. For those who do not know, I prefer the outdoors and manual labor to the white collar world. For the better part of the last American century, this sort of career choice would have placed me in the proverbial panting and pussified 99% of today.

Things have changed greatly over the past few years, however, and it does seem that working hard in the field is once again becoming the average guy's best chance at striking it rich.

Few stories better encapsulate the phenomenon than that of James Dinnison, a 25 year old high school dropout banking $200,000 a year running drills in underground mines.

I have an internship for summer 2012 in a big 4 firm for a couple of months within the equivalent of CF. Not sure what I would do if I were made a full-time offer, but at this point in time I know that IB (IBD) is something I want to go into.

What I am wondering is if that internship will be enough to get me past the application stages? I need to stand out in some way, I don't go to a target uni although I hardly attend somewhere bad.

Thanks!

What Is A Bank?

A bank in the general sense is simply a financial institution which receives customer deposits. Due to the fact that banks have control over the money of the general population, they are usually highly regulated by the government and central bank.

There are two kinds of bank:

  • Investment Bank - provides financial services such as asset management, corporate finance, sales & trading, equity research
  • Commercial / Retail Bank – manages the money of customers in savings accounts, current accounts and provides services such as loans, credit cards etc.
