Simple question out of curiosity. Do Bulge Bracket IB banks have URM quotas to fill? Does it help to have URM status when seeking IB employment?

I am not really asking for opinion on affirmative action - just wondering about question at hand.

Hi All,

I received a (CS/MS/JPM-type) SA offer last semester with a 3.2 GPA and accepted. I was called to the interview process by a recruiter who knew me well and despite the GPA, I did well in the super day and landed the offer. Everything thus far has been stellar.

Hi guys:

I was offered a part-time position (up until the firm moves its office from country X to Y) as an investment analyst at a start-up hedge fund in my city. The position's relevant work experience requirement is 0-1 years, and must have an BBA in finance.

The fund manager is well-known and has quite an impressive track record/background which makes me feel more comfortable about the situation.

My concern is the following:

Should I take this position (despite having zero experience in HFs) and hope I will learn first-hand from the HF manager himself, or should I aim for a full-time gig at a well known and established firm?

I found an interesting job position for an intern at a BB through my university's job portal. It is for a BB I went for a networking event a few years ago, but I have never spoken to employees there ever since. I do remember one MD's name and I was wondering whether I should first approach him via email to ask for advice etc. whatever before applying. In this case, how should I formulate my email?

Chances for NYC BB from USC

What are the chances for me working in an NYC BB after finishing my four years at USC as an undergrad? Currently finishing my freshman year as a science major, but I plan on minoring or even switching a major. Any advice for this? Also, what kinds of internships should I be looking at for this summer or next? Would it be alright if I just did corporate science research this summer?

My end goal would be a summer analyst position my junior summer. I understand that USC is only a target for west coast BB but I really do want to work in NYC and believe I am a very competent/competitive applicant.

I see couple of questions on BB background check for FO jobs every day.

There are several good threads, explaining the process and everything, but advices almost never come from someone who actually worked at the BB HR. Either people speak from their experience which is kinda random, or they just preach 10 commandments.

I would like to know how exactly are GPA, ECs, test scores, references, criminal history, etc. are being checked.

In the past few months, I have had recruiters contact me about position openings. However, the banks are essentially no-names, I am not talking about boutiques, but they are companies I never heard of. For example, I got a call about some Japanese bank(not Nomura), that I never heard of. Then I had a call about some Israeli bank looking to recruit. I was just curious to know if BBs or large banks even use recruiters. I can understand these smaller banks using them.

Tomorrow I leave for a Freshman program at a BB, and I wanted to know if you guys have any networking tips for me?

I have completed the BIWS Networking Toolkit, so I have been reviewing that, and I plan to get as many business cards as I can, and try to build friendships, which I obviously want to use to obtain an internship hopefully my sophomore summer.

Does anyone have any advice I can use in building these friendships, if so, can you please help me out?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Obviously subjective, but what MM banks would you take over the BBs if you were concerned about exit opps? Obviously there is variance amongst groups, but in general, what (if any) middle markets would you take over the bigger guys? Also, does an analyst at a firm like UBS really have a better shot at larger PE than someone from a top mm like JEF or HLHZ? Finally, I realize that this is POINTLESS, I'm just wondering.

So I'm about to enter Wall Street, but having noticed some kids I grew up with, who worked in the BB or HF full-time leave, I'm scared. Three of them:
1. One went to a semi-target (think Georgetown, UND), worked as a paper trader for a few years after grad at a BB, now is "biz-development" at some IT firm or something
2. The other went to the Ivy League, worked in a start-up HF, then went to BB, and now is at a start-up.
3. This guy went Ivy League too, was a credit trader at a BB for 4 years, now is at an insurance firm. He's not a salesman, but still.

Today, I got an e-mail that I got selected to attend a freshman program at a BB. (Damn, that felt good to write, lol)

What should be my approach in terms of networking as I go into this event?

Obviously other students will be there, so I don't really know if I can build that one-on-one connection. Also, the program is basically a few days, so I really can't build a connection that quick. So, should I just try to get their business cards?

If you have any other tips, I welcome those too.

Thank you for all of your help and God Bless!

I have an Interview for a SA position with the national sales team of the private bank of a BB. I would really appreciate it if anyone can shed light on this role and all the various behavioral/fit questions I should expect to be able to field....while do know that this career path is consistently crapped on by a majority of members on this site, I am interested and very passionate about this business and any help is extremely appreciated. Additionally, I am also curious about the key characteristic traits that a MD would need to hear as to why you will suceed in Private Banking. Any help is extremely appreciated. Thank You

Hey guys, here my problem. I am snowed in right now, there is 38 inches of snow in my driveway and the street. My town hasn't even begun to plow the roads since the plows are to small and there is a limited number of front loaders. I have a super day at a BB tomorrow (monday) and two interviews with hedge funds on Tuesday and Wednesday. I don't think I will have a problem moving the hedge fund interviews because they are in CT as well. How should I go about moving the BB superday? I have emailed HR and the interviewers and am awaiting a response. Will I get an auto ding if I can't show up for superday because of snow?

How many of you monkeys probably can't to work tomorrow because your snowed in and Metro North won't run past Stamford?

PWM is generally looked down upon, except for the opportunity to add "name" to your resume.

Just curious, what is the exact difference between these two categories of PWM gigs/shops?

I heard ML/UBS gigs are usually bich work. Would that be different for JPM/GS?

Read a lot of conflicting opinions on this forum about say JPM PWM/PB (some good some bad).

Hi fellow monkeys,

I've been along time lurker, first time post. I was set on doing investment banking and knew that the best way to get a IBD job is to land an SA offer. I realized that I wasn't good enough this year plus the horrible job market for IBD, and am left with no offers on the table.

I am set on BB because I want to have the flexibility in exit opps. I am planning to make a career out of it but you never know what opportunity lies down the road and so want to also be working for a top brand name in the long run.

Hey guys,

Sr associate in strong group at CS/Barc/BAML/Citi (with focus on M&A) and hearing bonus season won't be so hot so debating leaving for elite boutique like EVR/GHL or MM shop like Lincoln/Harris.

Question: how often is this move made from BB to elite / MM? And how do you go about doing this without getting caught and bent over by your MD? I like the job, the group (great culture, analysts), and the hours aren't bad. Knowing that I could make more elsewhere assuming all else is the same is making me seriously consider a move.

Appreciate the insight. And please don't ask me what bank or group I'm in or about comp at BB's (variable, but regrettably lower than previous years).

Currently having to make the hardest decision of my career so far and input would be much appreciated!

So a little background, I graduated from a semi-target UK university with an Economics degree and a frankly TERRIBLE grade (sub 3.0 GPA equivalent, a 3rd Class). After graduating I secured an IBD internship at a top tier BB (JPM / GS / MS) but due to underlying problems at the bank at offer time, basically none of the interns got a return offer (good feedback though). After that I started a full time job at a Big 4 in Audit, in a FIG coverage group - I am working mostly on US investment banks.

Now, I do not like Audit, it is not what I want to do and the job is mind-numbingly tedious. However, it is guaranteed for 3 years and with my academics and this job market that is a good thing.
