Off season internships -- How common are they

While working to break into the IB industry I realized my best chance will be either a fall internship or an off season internship.

At middle market and boutique banks specifically, how often can one find an off season internship?

In this situation lets assume extreme networking is going on and the candidate has sufficient knowledge of current valuation methods, finance, accounting, current finance related events, and firm specific knowledge.

Has anybody heard anything about this firm? Apparently they're a new energy boutique out of Denver with bankers previously from BAML/Petrie Parkman, but I can't find out any more than that.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Bay Area Banking/PE/Consulting Inquiry

New on here and I wanted to connect with Bankers, Private Equity and Consultants in the Bay Area. I went to school at UCLA and I have worked in the Southern California for the last 3 years as a Senior Analyst and Independent Consultant for a number of Boutique Investment Banks headed by former Drexel and Goldman Sachs bankers ( not barging or anything just providing some color).

Anyways, I am looking to move back to the Bay Area and I would love to connect with individuals out there! I am not expecting anything other than perhaps some insight or share experiences of your time in the CITY. As everyone is aware its extremely tough in a NEW city to network and connect with like-minded people.

Let me start off by saying: this thread is not for rankings! I completely agree with WSO comments that “rankings” are arbitrary. However, there has been a tremendous reshuffling since 2008, and I’m asking for help categorizing investment banks (in U.S.). In particular, middle market and boutique investment banks. I’m looking for guidance from everyone (BB, MM, and boutiques), not a bashing that one investment bank is better than another.

A majority will agree that the Bulge Bracket’s are:
Bank of America/Merrill Lynch
Barclays Capital
Citi
Credit Suisse
Deutsche Bank
Goldman Sachs
JPMorgan
Morgan Stanley
UBS

What about Middle Markets?
What about Boutiques?

a) Well Fargo/Wachovia (not sure if they are top MM or bottom BB?)
b) RBC Capital Markets (I know BB in Canada, but are they considered top MM in U.S?)
c) RBS (no clue where they stand anymore)
d) BNP Paribas
e) ABN AMRO
f) HSBC
g) Jefferies (once considered boutique, where do they stand now? Lower or top MM?)
h) Evercore Partners
i) Greenhill & Co.
j) Rothschild
k) Lazard
l) Houlihan Lokey
m) Harris Williams
n) William Blair
o) Robert W. Baird
p) Moelis & Co.
q) Piper Jaffray

How many of you on the list are from Boston? Boston is known as a buyside city, maybe an insurance city, and lately a political city. What do people do here?

Do these opportunities exist here in Boston?
- Bulge Bracket IB
- Prop Desks
- Sell Side equity/FI desks

This city more than most is a boutique town (ignoring of course the large buyside players). There are pockets of amazing jobs at small hedge funds, pe shops, buy side trading, but I feel like you have to be in the gentleman's club to get there. These shops do not come recruiting or have super days. How do you break into this secret world?

I'm 1 year out now from a target with a good GPA and a BB internship. Currently at a different BB, but really want to get paid. Coming out in last years job market really manifested some low ball offers. Feel free to PM me with any opportunities or if you just want to discuss my perception of the Boston market.
