This should be a good fight. Floyd is still the best but he's slowed down a bit and is willing to get into brawls a bit more. Guerrero is def. a brawler.

After that shitty UFC PPV last weekend I'm ready to see a good fight.

Hopefully it matches Judah-Garcia from last weekend.

What requires a sturdy head, quick-thinking skills, and a never-back-down attitude? Working in a high pressure financial job ........and boxing. In Hong Kong there is a charity event that pits financial professionals against each other in a series of bouts for charity. It is no joke and volunteers do some serious training:

The 14 finalists trained at Jab Mixed Martial Arts Studio in the heart of the business district twice a week for five months. In addition to the sessions of sparring, punching bag work, crunches and rope-skipping, most trained four to five times a week, and in some cases twice a day. The finalists were culled from 70 hopefuls and were paired off for seven bouts of three two-minute rounds each.

Would you ever participate in this event? What would be your dream financial boxing match-up?

Haymakers For Hope

For all the talk of private equity and hedge funds as exit opps here on WSO, one interesting route that often goes overlooked is the non-profit path.

Too often non-profit and charitable work gets lumped into one of two camps:

  1. Something for liberal arts students
  2. Something you've got to do to round out your b-school apps

Well, I'm here today to obliterate this false dichotomy.

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Andrew Myerson, the founder of Haymakers For Hope, a truly awesome charity that combines amateur boxing and the fight to end cancer. He's an ex-Goldman Analyst with a truly unique story to tell. Read on to learn more.

Seeing how there a few fight fans on the forum. I was wondering what you guys thought of Canelo?

He seems to be pretty promising fight and the fact that he is 22 with 41 fights is pretty impressive. With Mayweather and Manny probably never going to take place, I have read that Canelo may fight Floyd soon. I think if he were to fight Floyd next May, he would lose. However in a few years, once he fights some more experienced guys, I think it would be an interesting fight.

He is fighting Josésito López on September 15. Also that night, its Chavez Jr vs Martinez. Who do you have for that fight?

Floyd Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto: May 5, 2012

Any fight fans in here? I just watched the first episode of Mayweather-Cotto 24/7 and I thought it was pretty legit.

This could be a good fight. Cotto is reinvigorated after that Margarito fight (I was so happy to see him wipe that sneer off Margarito's face), and this is at 154lbs - the weight class Cotto should be fighting in not the 145 he fought Manny at.

This will be a tough fight for Floyd Jr. It was nice to see he and his dad had reconciled somewhat.

And while its not in the limelight I'm pretty excited to see Canelo-Sugar Shane.

Thoughts anyone?

Down Goes Frazier - Champ Dies at 67

I know we have a lot of fight fans on WSO, and today we've lost one of the greats - maybe the greatest of all time. Smokin' Joe Frazier succumbed to liver cancer at age 67. During his career, he racked up an amazing 32-4 record, with all four losses to either Muhammed Ali or George Foreman. I will always remember him for the class act that he was his whole life.

After taking Ali into his own home and putting a roof over his head when Ali was banned from boxing for dodging the draft, Ali turned around and bit the hand that fed him by insulting Frazier repeatedly. Frazier never said a word, he just let his fists do the talking. His fights with Ali will be remembered as some of the best ever. Rest in peace, champ.

Dewey Bozella's Pro Debut

dewey-bozella.jpg

We had a robust debate here on WSO about the death penalty recently, especially as it pertained to the September execution of Troy Davis in Georgia. At the center of the issue was the perceived lack of evidence against Davis (an issue also hotly debated) and the concern that a possibly innocent man was being put to death.

Dewey Bozella was never on death row, but his case is both inspirational and gives you a lot of food for thought. You see, Dewey is making his professional boxing debut at age 52 on Saturday night in Los Angeles after spending 26 years in prison for a murder he didn't commit. I can't imagine what it's like to spend half your life in Sing Sing for a murder you didn't commit, but I damn sure wouldn't want to be his opponent on Saturday night.

Bozella is the recipient of the 2011 Arthur Ashe Courage Award, presented to him at the Espy's in July. His story is pretty incredible. He was convicted in 1983 of murdering a 92-year old Poughkeepsie woman in 1977. He got 20 years to life in Sing Sing. He took up boxing in prison to keep the other inmates from harassing him, and he eventually became the Sing Sing prison boxing champion.

Thoughts on Mayweather-Ortiz

What do you guys think of the fight's ending?

I thought Mayweather was firmly in control of the fight and was uncharacteristically more aggressive, connecting with solid combos through Ortiz' porous defense. For every flurry Ortiz pressured Mayweather with, Mayweather would connect with three more.

I don't care what any Ortiz nuthugger or Mayweather hater says -- that headbutt was undoubtedly intentional. There is no position in boxing that justifies moving the way Ortiz did. Ortiz' headbutt was also possible grounds for disqualification. It was foolish for him to do that and NOT expect retaliation.

What a sad mess for the boxing community this fight ended up being. I'm a new fan to the boxing world with pacquiao coming onto the scene, but this sort of makes it all to clear why the sport is dying(at least vs MMA).

Honestly even if you just put all the film of the two actually throwing punches, which btw would probably total up to about a 1/4 of the actual air time at most, it still would be boring. With all the hype to the fight also.... Alas, i was forced to watch a big mouth no show dance around and wait for a huge massive Ukrainian stick at an opponent he could have finished within 6...

Any other monkeys watch the fight this weekend?

I really can't stand the UFC but if boxing keeps on putting this garbage out... i might have to dabble in the octagon.

Now that I know WSO has a bunch of fight fans, I thought it would be a good idea to offer a few thoughts about Saturday's upcoming slugfest between 32-year old phenom Manny Pacquiao and 39-year old "Sugar" Shane Mosley. This one has the potential to be Fight of the Year, so any monkeys on the fence about it should definitely tune in.

It's hard to think of a more electrifying fighter than Manny Pacquiao, and the odds reflect that. At the moment, Mosley is a 6:1 underdog, which has me wondering if it wouldn't hurt to put a little money on the older fighter. After all, Mosley's no pushover. He fought almost 100 fights as an amateur with a record of 96-3, and he won his first 38 professional fights, most by knockout.

Last week, New York officially lifted a ban on White Collar Boxing. For those of you not in the know (which included myself until I saw this article this morning), WCB is a boxing league, for you guessed it, white collar professionals. The question is, would you be willing to enter the ring?
