Raine vs. BB

Raine has a pretty sweet advisory/investment model and strong name in the media space, but how would you compare the group to other BB offers (particularly within the M&A groups at a Citi/CS/DB)?

Thanks!

Why a Bulge Bracket Investment Bank?

There's some solid posts on WSO why boutique/MM. Since I have two boutique IB internships and want to land a BB FT this fall I thought I'd bring it up (potential interview question):

Why a BB? as opposed to Boutique / MM?

What's the best way to answer this?

Typical/plain answers:
-Bigger deals
-"World class" training programs
-Global firms
-Deal flow
etc...

Lateral to BB or stay for MM PE

I'm 6 mo. into my 1st year at a boutique IB in NYC (known/has presence, but not really a "top" boutique). I just spoke to a headhunter about PE opportunities and he was strongly encouraging lateraling to a BB or else PE opportunities might be very limited. I was aware of this when I first started, but I figured I'd stick it out because I thought IB experience was IB experience, and if I performed well in interviews it wouldn't make too much of a difference. But business has been slow and 6 mo. into the job I can't say all too much for transaction experience, and I feel like I'm more at a disadvantage to my peers at this stage than I had initially thought I'd be.

IB SA Deadlines for Non-Targets?

I am a non-target junior trying to apply for SA 2012 positions. Does anyone know the deadline for the major BB MM and elite boutiques? I know of some, like CS's deadline is Jan 3rd, JPMC is Jan 15, Lazard is Jan 16, and etc...

But a lot of the websites don't actually have deadlines listed (or I cannot find them?)

Does anyone know when the deadlines actually are?

What is a Bulge Bracket Bank (BB)?

The "bulge bracket" is a slang term to describe the largest and most profitable multi-national investment banks in the world whose banking clients are normally huge institutions, corporations, and governments. The tombstone - an advertisement of a new issue - usually has the bulge bracket listed as the first group.

excluding those who got in through networking or who majored in engineering, what are the average GPAs at the bulge brackets? Do they differ between GS and UBS?

I was thinking 3.7 to 3.8 or so depending on school

As IBD Analyst, Will I be able to pay my sister for med school? HELP!

Ok so I accepted a SA offer for 2011 at a BB in NYC. Ideally I will start full-time in 2012 for my IBD stint, which is when my sister graduates from college. That leads to the main problem

My family is actually quite poor and was unable to afford my sister to go to optometry school. She knows she will get accepted to the program but the cost is about 250 000 (including living etc) over 4 years. My parents are discouraging her from doing this and are convincing her to do something else. They refuse to help her take out any loan.

Hey guys. I was just wondering what are some of the advantages/disadvantages of mid-sized private boutiques such as Needham vs. the large public bulge brackets? Comparatively, how are the hours, the pay, experience, and exit opps?

Thanks!

on my school's career net there are only... about 3-4 BBs recruiting for FT analysts. And then there are a couple that want a minimum of 1 years worth of IBD experience, which I think is silly to be asking of a bunch of seniors, but whatever. Are BBs not hiring this year, or did they take everyone from their intern classes?

Fall Internship Timing

I'm a rising senior interested in banking and I'm starting my IB Fall Internship at a top bank just as most people will be finishing up with their SA internships nearly everywhere else. The bank has recently opened up a new group within their IBD and I'm getting a late start.

I'll be working from August until November and nearly every aspect of the internship is identical to the standard summer position.

How will the timing of this internship impact my chances of being given a FT offer?

Canadians on Wall Street

Hi all;

I am wondering if any of you who are in the industry have come across Canadians in your work. If you have, I would appreciate anything you could tell me about your impressions of the quality of their work or training. Also, unofficially of course, what is the general attitude towards these bankers having not had the same undergraduate experience as the majority of The Street.

So you know where I'm coming from with this question, I am a Canadian university junior who will be starting a finance specialization in the fall. I was recently admitted to one of the highest ranked schools in the country with a fairly high GPA. I accepted on the promise that they have the resources to help me achieve my goal of working on Wall Street.

I have read the stats that I have been able to find, and know that this particular school places about 10% of the graduating class each year into finance. This works out to about 45 students, of which 15-25% end up working in the States.

PLEASE HELP

I will be very honest with you all.

I have just received a full-time offer as an analyst with a bulge bracket investment bank. I charmed my way through interviews, memorized the right questions through advice from this site and I was able to secure an offer. I know what investment banking is but I am only now becoming intimidated by it.

I have many brilliant friends who went the investment banking route and failed. They ended up hating it as many often do and the ended up quitting. These are brilliant kids who I consider well above my level when it comes to mental capacity and analytical capabilities.

Anyways, here is me:

Boutique Bandwagon?

What does everyone make of this Bloomberg article (and corresponding league table data?)about mergers and acquisition advisory?

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=conewsstory...

Essentially, its states that JPM, MS, and GS gained the most market share due to the crises, and that BB's like BOA-ML and Barclays also gained market share.

- JPM, MS, and GS had an average of 12% market share each (up from average of 8% each)
- BOA-ML has 8%, up from 7% (rounded both)
- Barclays has 6% (down from 7%)
- UBS has 4% (significant drop from 7%, which was in line with BOA-ML last year)

Further:
- 13 boutique banks that don't do lending combined for 10% of market, down from 12% of total market
