Choosing Tools You Use

How much say did you get in tools you use for your job? When do you actually get a say? Post-MBA? Later?

My firm puts all the analysts on the cheap stuff. How senior will I have to be to convince them otherwise?

Monkeys, I am new to S&P CapIQ and am looking for some advice. Like the thread title reads, I am trying to find past transactions of industry groups at particular banks (ex: Energy, BNP Paribas). Also, trying to find league tables in industries (ex: Energy M&A League Table). How do I process these searches in CapIQ (am having a surprisingly difficult time figuring out how to do this)?

Capital IQ vs Thomson ONE

Our firm is deciding between Capital IQ and Thomson ONE subscription. I used Capital IQ during my trial and liked it, haven't used Thomson ONE.

From what I've learned so far Capital IQ has a better interface, but Thomson ONE has free access to various broker reports, which is pretty important for us.

We will be using platform mainly for peer comparison, M&A data, company financials (including private companies), and research (where available), specific focus on emerging markets.

It would be nice to have Thomson ONE for both above mentioned tasks AND vast broker research base. But I'd rather have on good product instead of 2 mediocre ones, if Thomson is no good.

Which data/research provider do you prefer (CapIQ, Thomson, Factset)

Just wondering what my fellow private equity colleagues prefer their firm uses. For once I have the ability to decide which provider our firm uses going forward and am wondering what others are using and how they like it.

From talking to account reps, it seems like Thomson definitely has the most research reports and information (content) but lacks in add-ins, macros, excel-related modeling plugins, etc. However they are working to build this in the past six months.

Factset seems to have all the cool gadgets and better technology/software/application but is a bit on the low end with respect to the research reports and content.

and Cap IQ I just don't like but that's my personal opinion.

What do you guys like/prefer?

CapIQ Vs. Pitchbook

Hey guys,

My team is looking at alternatives to CapIQ. Did a demo with Pitchbook (www.pitchbook.com) recently. Was wondering if anyone uses it and has an opinion?

I do tons of public company comps for all our portfolio companies which is amazing with CapIQ and the excel plug-in. I also do a lot of precedent transaction research and try to keep on top of every deal in our industry, which is pretty tedious. Pitchbook seems like it eliminated a lot of the need to read through 5-10 different daily deal e-mails. I also feel like pitchbook may have more rich data on VC/PE deals.

Has anyone used both and have some pros and cons they can contribute comparing the two resources?

Thanks

Which Internship to choose from ( PWM) ?

Hey guys,

I have been lurking on here for a while, and this is my first post.

I have two internship offers this fall ( couldn't find anything spectacular). There both at BB in PWM. I really can't decide which one would be more beneficial or rewarding, and was hoping to get some input.

The first internship would be me working under management. The financial advisers essentially would be our clients. I was told I would be putting on events, and would help scheduling conferences. I am not 100% sure what this would entail.

The second internship would be working with a team of financial advisers, helping with powerpoints, some excel work, and word. No cold calling. The prospects would essentially be our clients.

Hey all,

Just got off of a phone interview with a firm, and they'd like me to send some previous work. I have a Comps project that was automated to CapIQ. I don't have CapIQ on my computer, and all the cells say "#NAME?" as a result.

The people I will be sending it to have CapIQ. Will they see the actual values, or what I see on my computer? I'd assume it would load correctly for them, but want to make sure.

This is probably a retarded question, but thanks ahead of time.

CapIQ or FactSet, if you could only have one...

which would you take? keep in mind with capiq you don't get dealmaven, although they have their own shortcuts and smart trace macros. but you don't get preslink, which is pretty useful too. my bank is a little small so to cut costs some of the analsts get capiq and some get factset. if you had to pick, which would you choose and why?

What would be the best way to search for potential LBO/MBO's using CapIQ?

Focus on Market cap below certain amount < $500MM? EV/EBITA <= 4x? EBITDA > x? Capital assets/Total assets > 60%? Debt/Equity < 0.5? Any other characteristics that would be useful?

Sorry if these sound like noob questions but was asked by boss to do a quick and dirty search on this.

Any insight would be appreciated.

When using your firm's model to look at a company, do you usually go through and scrub your own historical numbers from a company's SEC filings or do you use the scrubbed numbers that a service like CapIQ provides and trust that they are correct?

I received a case study to complete. Quickly completed the DCF/LBO valuation, but want to also look at relative valuation in the analysis (although I know this is less accurate now since analysts are all over the place with estimates and few deals are being completed). Since I'm no longer in banking, I don't have access to Bloomberg for estimates and no more CapIQ for precedent deals. Is there any website that people generally use to obtain this information? I don't think any of the major information providers offer personal accounts.
