I'm not exactly a new user, but I still wanted to introduce myself. I'm am incoming freshman in Carnegie Mellon and I'm planning to double major in business and math. I've already discovered a lot by being on WSO and hope to continue learning from this great community. I also hope to meet some CMU students/alumni and other students who'll be starting college with me. That's just about it; thanks for reading!

Hi, first post here. I'm a senior in high school and I'm trying to decide between four schools: Northwestern, Carnegie Mellon, Tulane, and Rice.

My info:
GPA: 4.0 UW
ACT: 32
EC: chess, tennis, DECA
Job: Paid intern at tech company

If I could choose a career tomorrow, it would be trading. I'm addicted to the market, I follow it all day and stay up late at night just researching and learning. I also manage my own, small Etrade account mainly for fun, but also for a little profit. I'd like to end up in S&T with the highest up bank I can in a city like NYC/Chicago/Houston.

Carnegie Mellon vs Columbia

 on 4/8/12 at 10:14pm

I've been admitted to Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science, Columbia Engineering and Cornell Engineering as an undergraduate. I will be a Computer Science major.

I realize that software developers max out their salary very soon and it's sort of a dead end job. Only way to succeed is to start your own company or join a successful startup. So I'm looking into a finance job. I may double major or minor in financial engineering (Columbia, Cornell) or computational finance (CMU).

My questions:

1) What kinds of jobs can computer science students get on Wall Street?

2) Which of these schools is best for me given my goals?

Thanks for your advice

Note: I'm not quite sure where I should put this thread. So sorry if this is the wrong forum section.

Johnson vs. Anderson vs. Tepper+$

I was just accepted at Johnson, Anderson, and Tepper. Tepper offered me a partial scholarship. What is everyone's opinion on these school's for management consulting? I would really like to eventually make my way back/ work on the west coast. My initial inclination is to choose UCLA because of its west coast strength, but Cornell seems to place slightly better at the top firms. Also, it is hard to say no to money. Thank you for the help.

Anyone have any friends who went here? I have a friend who is starting as a credit trader @ a BB this summer after graduating from Tepper and I was a bit surprised seeing as I didn't think S&T roles were pulled from there.. anyone know the typical recruiting that goes down? CMU is known to be quant oriented so figured lots of risk etc jobs but didnt think S&T../

Which Canadian Program? McGill, Ivey or Schulich?

Hey Forum,

I'm a Canadian business student who has gotten into McGill Commerce, Ivey's Advanced Entry Opportunity and the Schulich School of Business. In the long term I would like to work in the States, and therefore I plan to do an MBA in a top-25 school.

Which of these schools would be my best bet? I know McGill has a great reputation in the States and their commerce program is pretty great but everyone knows Ivey is a better program and has better opportunities. I'm also looking into Schulich because of the cheap tuition and it's reputation (ranked 10th in Economist Ranking, #1 business school in Canada according to WSJ, Forbes and Economist).

I posted this exact same topic in the investment banking forum, but I wanted to see which school would be better if I were to pursue a career in S&T?

I was recently accepted to Boston College's Carroll School of Management Honors Program and Carnegie Mellon's Tepper School of Business. I was wondering which would be the best option for me if I were to pursue this path? Which school would offer the best recruitment, internships, and most importantly job offers upon graduation?

As a side note, I was wait listed at Dartmouth.

Which school would offer the best recruitment, internships, and most importantly job offers upon graduation?

Is CMU Undergrad worth the debt?

So... yesterday I was officially accepted into Carnegie Mellon. Now I'm wondering - is it worth the money?
It costs 55k a year - assuming parents provide 15k a year, I provide 5k a year, and CMU gives me a grant of 10k a year, that leaves 25k a year, or 100k worth of debt.

Short and sweet: is it worth the debt over a public university (specifically, University of Maryland)?

I've crunched some numbers and assumed I get an S&T job out of undergrad in NYC. The numbers would look somewhat like this:

Apartment: 1500
Utilities: 200
Other: 50
Total Rent: 1750

Food 300
Metro 100
Cable 100
Cell 100
Misc 150
Total Misc: 750

Total Monthly Cost: 2500

Total Yearly Expense Cost: 30000

Everyone knows about how good at placements targets are - how about these non-targets?

Give seperate ratings for S&T/IBD/ and HF and P/E if applicable (I doubt this)
Baruch Macaulay
University of Maryland Smith (Does the Senbet Fund make a difference?)
Carnegie Mellon - Tepper
Carnegie Mellon - Mellon College of Science (Math)

David Tepper grew up in a middle class neighborhood in Pittsburgh, PA. He became interested in the stock market after observing his dad, an accountant, trade stocks during the day. Following high school, he enrolled in the University of Pittsburgh, where he excelled. After Tepper graduated with a degree in economics, he found a job with Equibank as a credit analyst. He quickly became bored with the role and enrolled in the MBA program at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Business, now named after him. Tepper’s experience at Carnegie Mellon helped him learn options theory at a time when there were no textbooks written on the subject. Kenn Dunn, the Dean of school of the school himself taught these option courses.

I'm a high school senior in the midst of college selection season. Below is a link of 2009 Tepper undergraduates placement survey.

http://www.tepper.cmu.edu/current-students/current...

Basically what I am asking is to please explain some of these positions to me. I understand some of the listed positions, but what exactly is a:

Analyst (IB analyst?)
Global Risk Analyst
Business Analyst (A consultant?)
Economics and Business Consultant (Your typical management consultant?)
Trading Analyst (Trader?)
Public Finance Analyst
Marketing Research Analyst

Are they considered Front office jobs?

Lastly, should I go here over Stern or Haas?

CMU Undergrad for Trading?

Just wondering if anybody had any thoughts about Carnegie Mellon undergrad for trading afterwards. I think they have a pretty strong computational finance curriculum. Anybody have any light to shed on this issue? Work with other CMU grads and where they land? Is it a respectable school for prospective traders? Recruiting? Thanks
