Which major is best to get into Equity Research/ Asset Management/ Private Equity?

I'm trying to decide whether or not to change my current major...

I am an Econ major at a non-target, but have the opportunity to enter into the Accounting program. While my school is not known for its Finance/Econ/Business degrees, it does have one of the top Accounting programs in the country. With my current GPA, and assuming I will have at least a 3.5 at the time of graduation, I should be able to secure a job offer from the Big 4 if I major in Accounting.

Work there for 5 years, get into the best business school I can, get my MBA...then what?

Different Majors

I am an undergrad at the University of Chicago. I'm an Econ major right now, but I'm thinking of switching.

Suppose an Econ student with good GPA, ECs, and interview technique gets a 10/10 rating for how suitable he is for the I-banking/s&t/asset management job.

How does a student of each of the following majors with the same GPA (adjusting for course difficulty), same ECs (the same finance- type organisations and leadership positions) and personability at interview rate on the 10-scale?

1) Math: ?/10
2) Stat: ?/10
3) English/Literature: ?/10
4) Public Policy: ?/10
5) Political Science: ?/10
6) Sociology: ?/10
7) Geography: ?/10
8) Physics: ?/10
9) Biology: ?/10
10) Art History: ?/10

Cornell ILR freshman mistake

I will be a freshman at Cornell ILR. When I applied for the program, I thought that it would be the school for me since it was part business and law. However, the focus of the major will be on labor related topics. Even though I will be allowed to take business-y classes as an upperclassman, I am certain I want to to go into into investment banking and closely related fields. Then bs-school eventually.

I want to have the major that the recruiters/ interviewers look out for more often than others. From there, I'll keep my extracurricular/ internships/ gpa in check to level the playing field.

Can I transfer in to CAS for econ after the fall semester, and not have to finish the year at ILR?(possibly double major with gov't / political science)

I am currently faced with the difficult decision of choosing between two majors. My current major is "Applied Accounting and Finance." I choose this major so I could follow either a CPA track or CFA track. However, my unexpected success in Finance (WM internship @ ML, 2010 Summer Analyst @ CS) has led me to question this major and attempt a last minute switch to a more Finance focused major. The only other major I can choose at this point and still graduate on time would be "BS Business Administration with a primary concentration in Finance, Secondary Concentration in Accounting, and Minor in Econ."

While I hate the idea of being a "Business Administration" major, that particular path at this point would allow me to take much more valuable and relevant courses than my current "Applied Accounting and Finance" major.

Can anyone share some thoughts and insight to my predicament? Is a "Business Admin" major looked down upon? Or would my primary concentration in Finance, Secondary Concentration in Accounting, and Minor in Econ overshadow the Business Admin Major?

Math major/ applied math major?

Hi,

I am currently a junior at a semi-target. For the last three years, I've been a pure math major, but am considering switching to applied math as it has become more in line with my interests. However, when I apply for quant/ quantitative trading positions next year, will my new major (should I decide to change) hurt me as it is less "prestigious" and abstract than the pure math major? I'm worried that companies will just think I am one of the many applied math majors interested in finance, as opposed to a smart math major they'd love to have.

Thanks!

I am a current senior at a top undergrad business school and have a full-time offer lined up with a bulge bracket doing investment banking.

My cumulative GPA is around a 3.6; however, my finance GPA is currently a 2.0. I am thinking about dropping finance and doing a management major instead in order to get a higher GPA and position myself better should I decide to pursue an MBA. Is this a good idea?
