Hey all,

I've been trying to do some research to determine the top/largest asset management firms in the Dallas/Fort Worth area outside of Oil & Gas or PE (so HFs, MFs, RE). The best data I've found was in a post from 2008, but hoping a few of you might be able to share more recent insight. Thanks in advance.

I might potentially be receiving an offer for an analyst position in Dallas. Can anyone shed some light?

1. Cost of living (compared to NYC)?

2. Entertainment?

3. Overall living conditions?

4. Hypothetically speaking, if I were to make around 55~60k in Dallas, what kind of lifestyle could I live?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for any insight,

Hello

I was considering applying to UT Dallas.
OR SMU

A little intro about myself.
I'm a Pakistani Citizen who visited USA just 2 weeks ago.
And really liked the atmosphere.

I gave my CIE O'levels and got good grades.
4A's and 3B's,

A in Accounts
A in Economics
A in Mathematics
A in Urdu(Pakistani Language)
B in Business Studies
B in Additional Mathematics
B in English Language

I will also give the SAT and TOEFL this October or November.
If I get supposedly 1350+ in SAT's Critical Reading and Math and 90+ in TOEFL iBT. Would I be able to get guaranteed admission in them, what about scholarships?

UT vs U Richmond vs Washington and Lee vs SMU

I'll probably be attending one of the four Southern colleges above next year and a future on Wall Street, or somewhere else in the Northeast (Greenwich,
Boston, etc.) will be a pivotal factor in my decision.

I've been unconsciously networking since the day I was born and I'm not exactly from the lower crusts. It would be pretty easy for me to get a good job in Houston or
Dallas or Austin, but I want to live in the Northeast.

Anyway, DISREGARDING my existing network, which of the four colleges would be best for breaking into investing banking in the Northeast? Secondly, which three, excluding UT (I might not get in; I don't want to go there anyway) would be best?

I'm at a northeast target, but, to be honest, I'd rather avoid NYC.

Could I do something like SunTrust IBD in Atlanta then transition to a Dallas hedge fund?

I am looking into UTD and SMU graduate school. I understand UTD is becoming a more recognized school in the area, but I still feel SMU gives you a better entry into the global workforce (opposed to UTD which might just be for local firms). Does anyone have any experience in what kind of position you can be expecting graduating from UTD with an MBA with focus on Finance?

Also would it make sense to work for a while and then look into the SMU Executive MBA instead? What kind of work experience is necessary to be accepted into that program?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm in consulting so I travel Mon-Thurs weekly and I am hoping to live with someone who is also a professional with a stable career.

I definitely only want to live in Uptown Dallas.

Title is says it all.

Graduated in Dec of 2010 from a non target in Texas. Got a job at a major (exxon, conocophillips, chevron, etc.) oil company. I've completed my first year here working in Risk/Credit. I've learned a great deal but I've got an itch to move into IB now.

I've been trying for IB since June of last year, even got a second interview at a firm in Dallas in August. Didn't get the job.

I've been able to network some but haven't been dedicated to it the same way a junior in college would be. I sat for the CFA level 1 this past December so I've been busy with that. Now since that hellish experience is over, I have time.

I've been working in Boston since I graduated last May doing strategy consulting. I've been in my firm's Boston office for about 5 months now and so far I'm loving it. The work-life balance is amazing and I love the people I work with. Now, I have the opportunity to relocate to my firm's Dallas offices.

I would really, really appreciate it if I could get a decent discussion on this going.. I don't have any bananas to give out but I know WSO can be a great breeding ground for good-willed commentary and discussions. I know it's a tedious read and am aware of the TL;DR phenomenon.. please make an exception for my case!

I'm a freshmen that attends a well recruited target, and I'm heavily interested in finding some sort of relevant experience this summer (I know it's early, but I'm just looking for advice).

I have no finance experience (apart from what I've picked up in a few investment oriented organizations around campus) - and it isn't helped by the fact that the program I'm studying in restricts fundamentals like finance and accounting until sophomore year. I've know a few things that anyone interested in finance would know that I picked up taking local college courses in finance my summer after senior year, but nothing highly legitimate.

Future of Oil&Gas I-Banking?

 on 6/11/11 at 7:32pm

Just wanted to get the opinions of energy bankers on the future of energy banking. When does M&A activity pick in this industry? When oil prices are high do firms stay put or do they try to merge? I know the major mergers like Exxon and Mobil, Conoco and Phillips happened in the late 90s early 00s because gas prices were so low that these firms felt that they needed to merge to generate higher profits. Forgive me, I'm a novice when it comes to the world of M&A....

If anyone can elaborate on this topic, that would be great.

Thanks.

NBA Finals upon us? Who you got?

Weird thing about this finals is that both star players from each team have been criticised for failing to win so someone corrects this.

Got me thinking, whose the best to never have won?

Barkley, Malone, Stockton, Nash, 'Nique?

Who you got?

EDIT: For JeffSkilling who doesnt understand the implication I made in my opening paragraph.

Let me have another go:

Weird thing about these finals is that both star players from each team, THIS BEING LEBRON JAMES FROM MIAMI AND DIRK NOWITZKI FROM DALLAS, have been criticised for failing to win so someone of the two will correct this,

Monkeys,

Medium length story made short: I was 99% sure I was getting a SA position in NYC this summer; however, it fell through. I had some fall backs in case that happened...but those fell through, too! So either: 1) I'm a failure or 2) I did something awful to someone years ago that merits all of this [or 3) IT'S ALL A CONSPIRACY!].

I am pretty much from a non-target (main reason I didn't get NYC); however, I know the technicals and fit forwards and backwards. I am in the Dallas, TX area; suggestions? I am open to any and all leads. So, any monkeys want to help a fella out? I would be totally comfortable communicating with you first before you point me in a direction.

I appreciate any advice.

Looking into several MSF programs. I want to end up in Dallas, so naturally UT-Dallas is appealing. Does anyone have any info as far as placement records or know if many Dallas HFs or Bulge Brackets recruit from this program? The info on their website is very limited. Any help would be much appreciated. I am sure to get in to Vandy and Nova, but would consider UT if recruiting was great, even if a lower tier school.

So I'm currently a senior graduating in about a month and I have yet to secure a full time offer. I'm a finance major from a top 15 school that isn't a target. Since it is so late in the game my options are decreasing and I wanted to know if anyone knew something about University of Texas-Dallas' MSF program. I'm not sure what type of finance I want to get into but I'm leaning towards banking or private equity and I also want to settle in Dallas. Should I just continue to look for jobs or start considering a MSF from UT-Dallas?

I review resumes for a career and have no problem with taking a look at yours. I have no preference whether or not you are in my market place or not. MM vs BB in Houston/Dallas in energy

This question is just out of curiousity.
And sorry if it is a stupid quesiton to ask.

What is the main difference between a BB in a Houston office or a mid to top MM that is well-known in the specific industry?

Pay?
Exit opps?

For example, a BB in Houston in their energy division or .... Simmons and Co.?

I know that is a top MM but there are many other MM in Houston and Dallas that are specialized in oil/gas/ect.?

What are the main differences? For this are specifically?

Thanks.
