What is better for MBA or MIF

Hey everybody,

I am currently facing a decision for next year:

Either I can work in a start-up which is now expanding in a new country (and I will have a leading position within the foreign division) or I can work in a finance related field (academic). Since I am still studying, working FT at a BB is yet not an option.

Which do you think is better for getting (later) into a MBA or MIF?

My background compromises:
Three internships, IBD and S&T at an IB (two at a mid size IB and one at a BB)
Finance related field of study
Goal: Work at BB (S&T) and later MBA or MIF

I already got accepted into the University of Michigan- LSA and my plan is to get into Ross Business School by sophomore year if i decide to go there.

I also got deferred from the University of Chicago. If I happen to get in for regular decision, which school should I go to? Which school has better recruiting and gets better jobs? I know Ross is a great school but U Chicago is overall, more prestigious in general, correct?

Sorry I'm a noob right now, any help will be appreciated.

Hey everyone, had final round interview in NJ office today, and didn't ask when to expect decisions. Does anyone know how soon the NJ/NY offices typically take to respond after the decision round? I heard a rumor that those extended offers would hear tonight but is that true? Has any one already heard from New York or New Jersey offices or know what turnaround time usually is? Thanks folks.

NYU CAS vs UVA McIntire

I've been accepted to both as a sophomore transfer. Well technically I need to apply to McIntire after completing the reqs, but I'm sure I'll get in.

I'm interested in trading, and I think NYU has a distinct advantage in the internship opportunities it will provide. On the other hand, I'll be an econ major and I don't want to suffer for not being in Stern (not allowed to transfer to Stern).

If I choose UVA I won't be able to intern during the year, but I won't have to worry about being disadvantaged to the business students, since I will be one. From what I understand, UVA tends to have stronger placements as well. Either BB trading or a prop trading firm is what I'm wanting to go into.

Any thoughts?

3-4 weeks since Bain final round - No decision

So I had my final round at Bain 3-4 weeks ago and still haven't gotten a decision. I know people who have been rejected from the same office, and one person who was accepted (the day of his interview). So what is most likely going on? It blows me away that it's taken this long, as I haven't had to wait this long for a decision from any other firm, and Bain has previously been extremely quick and open in this whole process.

Blah Blah Blah I'm at Umich, first year here, now is the time for me to apply to Ross or fuhgetaboutit... Right now I'm heavily leaning towards majoring in CS

What I am interested in:

-trading
-programming
-consulting

The problem: obviously CS would be better to get a job in trading/programming, but what about consulting as a computer scientist and not from Ross? I'm just wondering if it would be significantly harder to get a job at firms like MBB using the engineering school's OCR and not Ross... I've heard that consulting firms like engineers/people with quantitative skills, but I've also heard that they're pretty damn focused on Ross too...

I will be interviewing with an Asset Manager soon and am also in talks with a few Investment Banks about potential interviews/offers. I really want to work in IB but this position would not be a bad way to start my career. I am fairly confident I could get an offer as an analyst but if I get the AM offer and can't expedite with other banking firms should I accept anyway? A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, so would it be stupid to turn down a sure thing? Also, what kind of time frame should I expect after a super day to hear back/be expected to accept or decline? Thanks everyone for your help!

So... yesterday I was officially accepted into Carnegie Mellon. Now I'm wondering - is it worth the money?
It costs 55k a year - assuming parents provide 15k a year, I provide 5k a year, and CMU gives me a grant of 10k a year, that leaves 25k a year, or 100k worth of debt.

Short and sweet: is it worth the debt over a public university (specifically, University of Maryland)?

I've crunched some numbers and assumed I get an S&T job out of undergrad in NYC. The numbers would look somewhat like this:

Apartment: 1500
Utilities: 200
Other: 50
Total Rent: 1750

Food 300
Metro 100
Cable 100
Cell 100
Misc 150
Total Misc: 750

Total Monthly Cost: 2500

Total Yearly Expense Cost: 30000

Hi everyone,

I've been lurking around this site for some time and actually own two of the interview prep guides. I've learned a lot from everyone here just reading, but now I need some advice.

I go to a non-target, and was able to secure two offers for internships through networking with alumni. Now, I need to decide where I'm going to work for the summer -- but theres a bit of a problem.

The first offer I got was through an alumni of my fraternity and university that works at GE Capital. I had a phone interview with him and one other person, and then I was offered a spot in their Risk Management internship program the next day. I thought it was very odd that I wasn't asked to come in for a "superday" or anything like that...but hey, who was I to complain.

Hi, I am deciding between two offers with deadline tomorrow. One is Blackrock Solutions Center and the other is quant investment analyst with Prudential fixed income. I am kind of torn and not really sure what to do. When I met with people from both groups, they all seemed very nice and the atmosphere at the two firms are different but both appealing. If I'm interested in trading or investment management what would be the better choice this summer?

So decision time. Have offers from both UBS S&T and Barclays IBD. I have read a lot of the information out on the web about the differences in lifestyle, experience, work-style ect. Would love to get some more opinions from people in the business or with experience.

Current pros of S&T: More daily excitement for summer analyst
cons : Not sure if trading is what I want to do for the next 5+ years of my life

Current pros of Barcap IBD: More holistic view of companies+skills=more flexible exit opps.
cons : analyst work has min. client interaction, mostly editing pitchbooks

When you get waitlisted for a job (meaning they explicitly tell you we've given out offers and rejection, we are going to wait to see our yield from offers and get back to you),
1) what are the odds of it working out (or does it depend too much to give an answer) and
2) are there any steps that are generally good to take like email to show interest?

Thanks

Hello Friends,

I need some advice in regard to obtaining a BB SA internship position for the following summer. I go to a University of London school and have two summer's worth of boutique bank experience. I'm curious of the ratio of students who obtain internships based on networking and connections compared to going through the actual process. How does the actual process occur? Is it entirely through a University program, or is there an individual aspect to it?

Any help in getting started as soon as possible would be amazing, with the ultimate target being a solid SA position at a BB, whether that be in the States or UK.

Cheers,

Dick

How Long For Decision?

I had a final round last Wednesday for a FO position. I was told (during the first round, which was 1.5 weeks prior to that), that if I were to make it to the final round, I pretty much have the position, the guy just wants to meet everyone that the hiring managers are going to bring on. They also said that they wanted to move fairly quickly with this. However, I have not heard anything from them yet.

How long does it usually take for firms to make a formal decision after the final round? They knew I was taking the CFA last Saturday so I assume that my manager didn't want to bother me before then. However, I did not receive a call yet this morning and am now very worried. I am looking for apartments in Manhattan and my potential roommates (and I) would like to know what sort of a budget to look at...

Burn a year? Help!

I need to make a decision within the next 24 hours.

Background: Current senior at a target on the West coast. Just got an exploding offer for a SA position at a BB for IBD but debating what to do.

Options I'm considering:

1. Accept it, work my tail off to get an offer, and stay at school an extra semester after the internship and ideally leverage the offer during full time recruiting again.

2. Accept it but continue looking for full time opps (which I've been doing for over 7 months now). I have a few more first round interviews for FT, but coming up next week and the week after.

My biggest issue is trying to decide whether or not to graduate in a few weeks. I can't decide if staying back another semester or even year (if I study abroad Spring semester) will look badly on a MBA school application in the future a few years down the line. Also, if I decide to stay on just another semester, what are my chances of being able to recruit and start as an Analyst in January?

Fellow Monkeys

Created a dilemma for myself. Recruitment season passed and I accepted an offer in S&T from a firm. Good firm, reputable, however, not my first choice.

My first choice was in IB with a firm that was much larger and much more respected at the time. I was denied my first choice. However, a recruiter from IB contacted me and said that a different group under the same department has an analyst opening.

As of right now I have chosen to interview again with the firm that is my first choice.

My dilemma:

1) I accepted the first firm's offer in Dec. 09.
2) I have no idea if I am allowed to renege on my contract?
3) My first choice firm, would offer more money as a first year analyst
4) How badly am I burning bridges with the first firm, if I get an offer from my first choice, and call up HR at the firm which I accepted and told them that I will no longer be able to be a part of the analyst class?

Any ideas would be a huge help, as I am pretty much freaking out that I could be making a wrong career choice or I might stuck in the first choice that I made.

Hi,

I superdayed at a regional boutique on Tuesday of last week and I thought the interviews went really well. Since my contact there told me to "stay put as they are still deliberating," however, I am starting to believe that I am on the cusp in their minds. In other words, they may have even given out a few offers already, and they're waiting to see if they will have room for me for the summer.

In your opinion, is there any way I can "better my case" with them at this point? I am very interested in the firm.
