Gallatin: A forgotten financier[part 2]

This post is a continuation to last weeks:
A forgotten Financier

There are two major achievements that deserve mention. First, there is Gallatin’s singular success in his pursuit of debt reduction. Gallatin took advantage of prosperous and relatively peaceful times to reduce the public debt of the emerging United States. The second is Gallatin’s efforts is the way in which he reinforced the financial institutions set up by Alexander Hamilton and made skillful use of them.

Don't call it 2008, but Effect on Graduate Jobs this Year?

Chinese Job Fair 09

What's the real outlook for 2011 recruiting for graduates? If the US/UK/Europe is not the place to be -- for any job--then where?

I had a very depressing time with an offer pulled from a top 3 asset manager. This was 2008. Fast-forward 3 years--I off-cycled until I earned some lucky breaks (I've never earned a bonus in my life).

For my students and mentees who may be in a tough spot again: Where do you guys recommend shooting those apps? Asia? Consulting? Anything but finance?

If you have specific firm yields or can guess what September would be like, that would help too.

**Actually, instead guessing around and waiting for recommendations like an Obozo, let's formulate an actionable strategy**

Dow Jones is up, Corporations post solid profits and stable growth. Real Estate is finally stable. What the fuck is going on in the White House? They cannot blame 1.6 trillion deficit in 2012 on the financial crisis that happened in 2008.

Obama is sure as hell making it rain. Your thoughts young wanna-be-monkeys and already employed masters of the Excel and PowerPoint?

PIG Flu: Portugal, Ireland, Greece on the Bubble

We might have Aegean Contagion Part Deux on our hands. All is not well on your Uncle Eddie's side of the pond. Ireland draws closer to a full scale bailout by the day. Portugal is signalling that they're not far behind. And Greece is in the news once again, having to restate their projected deficit figures and admit that they're going to miss their targeted deficit reduction goal. By a lot.

While Greece won't require another bailout (at least for the time being), a combined bailout of Ireland and Portugal may take as much as €200 billion, which would all but wipe out the bailout fund established the ECB and IMF back in March. Strap in, kids, it's gonna be a bumpy ride.

Germany's projected budget deficit

For those of us who are worried about the Greek bailout and generally rising levels of government debt, you no longer have to worry if you're German. What Angela Merkel has described as an "unprecedented feat" will save the nation 80B euro's or $96B. How will this be accomplished?

"The proposed cuts to benefits, by contrast, look brutally concrete to many Germans. The government plans to eliminate a heating subsidy for the poor and to stop paying welfare beneficiaries’ contributions into the pension system, saving €1.9 billion a year. Such cuts are defensible: the contribution subsidy raises pensions by a negligible amount, for example. But while shaking down the unemployed, Mrs Merkel proposes to spare the rich."

If it's any consolation to all you Wall Street apes, part of the plan involves green energy. Not the kind that relies on renewable resources, the stuck-to-the-back-of-Homer-Simpson's-shirt kind. Well, whatever, for practical purposes people will always argue over nuclear power. At least we know the Germans have the quiet reserve and dignity to debate this civilly. Except they don't.
