Ratings Agencies in the Spotlight Again

I know this topic is a few days old, but it is still fresh in my mind. As everyone has seen, the US is now suing S&P

The U.S. government is expected to file civil charges against Standard & Poor's Ratings Services, alleging that it improperly gave high ratings to mortgage debt that later plunged in value and helped fuel the 2008 financial crisis.
The charges would mark the first enforcement action the government has taken against a major rating agency involving the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.
S&P said Monday that the Justice Department had informed the rating agency that it intends to file a civil lawsuit focusing on S&P's ratings of mortgage debt in 2007.

While enjoying a fine chat with another Certified User, an interesting topic for discussion came up. We were talking about watching friends and coworkers enter relationships, get married, and move away—including a whole bunch of them in the last couple of years alone.

“It’s funny, it’s like a recession brings people closer together!” went the observation.

And that got me to thinking…what if it actually does?

How to not lose your house in a divorce

An older friend of mine was married a few years ago but recently got divorced. He's currently in the process of settling his assets with his soon-to-be ex-wife. He did something that could potentially save him his house. Here's what he did:

He registered the deed of his house to his parents. Then, every month he would give them a certain amount of money (which doesn't really matter, since the money is kept within the family). However, by doing so his parents becomes de facto landlords and he himself becomes a tenant. Therefore, when he gets divorced his wife can not take away the house. After all, if a married couple rents a house and gets divorced, one cannot simply split half the house since it belongs to the landlord. Neither one has claim over it.

I wrote a while back about the IKOS fallout as yet another example of why wealth and marriage don’t mix. The reality, however, is undeniably altogether different. Relationships of any and every sort are a compromise and a partnership. I for one, however, am increasingly more in favor of inequality in relationships where a great deal of money is involved. Though it may not be fair, it would likely help avoid messes like these...

There are only so many good topics to write about. There are only so many interesting stories. But some things never get old. Reminding young men in today’s day and age that marriage is generally a terrible idea, is such a topic for me. In this particular case it is Martin Coward and Elena Ambrosiadou reminding us that building an empire with the one you love, often means creating a monster in your own home.

Though I am tempted to tell this particular story from a neutral perspective, my prejudices win out. Yes, it does take two to tango… but divorce is the institutionally designed rape and pillage of a man’s wallet. This story is another shining reason why. What this poor bastard is suffering through for merely dipping his PhD. pen in some Brazilian ink is the stuff you young money men of tomorrow should be very finely in tune with. You may think your girl is different and your story won’t end this way. But then again…so did Mr. Coward.

I can't find the article but I read once that there are more instances of divorce and infidelity among couples with at least one member in high-finance. Just wondering everyones thoughts on this or stories.

BBB shouldn't stand for Better Business Bureau, but for Bride Buyer Beware...

Don't believe the hype fellas, that IS what you are doing when you put a rock on her finger. You are buying into a futures contract with an unpredictable, unstable counter party and a central clearing house just itching to take you to the cleaners at T+3.

Today marks the D-day of Tiger and his baby momma subsidy in perpetuity for the next half century or so, Elin Nordegren.

Keep your mind on your money and your money on your mind and out the pockets of her and your own personal version of the like.

A $750 million dollar golden parachute for Woods wife? Better than most CEO's get, and all she did was spread 'em and pump out a couple kids. Lucky bitch. Oh, and on a per head basis assuming only 17 affairs, it cost him $44.12 million per affair; damn expensive hookers if you ask me. :P

Andy note: "Best of Eddie" - while Eddie is on vacation we're throwing up some of his classic posts from the past. This one from June 2010 is part of the very popular "Sell Your Options" 5-part series. More to come later this week & next. If there's an old post from Eddie you'd like to see up again shoot me a message.

Do you know why divorce is so expensive? Because it's worth it.

I don't think my advice today is going to come as a shock to any of you. In fact, if you're pressed for time, here's the takeaway: Don't get married, especially in your 20's.

Now, before I delve into the post, I have to point out a few key things. First, take my advice with a whole shaker of salt. After all, I've walked down the aisle of doom three times now. Second, I have to measure my words carefully because I am happily married now, my wife might someday get bored enough to read this, and I'd like to get laid again before I die. Fear not; I'll still give you the straight scoop like I always do. I'll probably just refrain from pointing out that dipping your privates in battery acid is a better move than getting married.

Here's a question for everyone. How many associates in your bank are married, and how many have gotten divorced? It seems that every senior banker I know is on their 2nd or even 3rd wife.
