Meet The Top 5 Executives Of The New Economy

In this week’s post I’m going to take a political twist. Benzinga's Alex Biles gives a list of what I call New Economy executives. These 12 practice a true-and-true free-market ideology which I think is in stark contrast to today’s WS plutarchy and serves as a fresh reminder that it’s the execution of their beliefs that unlock the American entrepreneurial spirit. Now, while I do identify with most of what they believe I am skeptical on a few of their tenets, so don’t take everything literally. So read on to find out who these “Captains of Industry” are and their contributions…

It's no secret that I'm not a huge fan of Facebook. I thought it was a neat idea early on, but like just about anything else it loses its luster when your mom becomes aware of it. So like the rest of the cool kids on the Internet I migrated to Twitter, which is actually much better suited to meet the needs of finance and econ information junkies like me. I didn't delete my Facebook account (it's really the only way to keep in touch with my old Marine buddies), but I more or less left it in my rear view.

Part of what I did on my time off was soft launch a side project I've been meaning to get off the ground for a couple of years now. Naturally, I wanted proof of concept before I plowed a bunch of time and money into it. So my alternatives (as I saw them, anyway) were to advertise a landing page on Google and compete for some relatively spendy eyeballs, or give Facebook advertising a shot and see if I could achieve better results for less money.

How does this relate to Wall Street, you ask? Well, one of the primary arguments against Facebook stock recently has been their seeming inability to capitalize on mobile advertising despite the fact that better than 50% of Facebook users interact on mobile platforms. I'm going to cover my surprising mobile findings in a minute, but I wanted to give you guys a breakdown of Facebook as an advertising platform from an advertiser's perspective, and that might help you to better judge the value of the stock.

At 4:00 AM on a breezy Tel-Aviv Wednesday morning, I spent one hour on Skype with David Daneshgar that made me forget the exhausting trip I had just taken and the deep cavity search I’ve went through at the borders.

We’ve talked about his interesting background; great win of the World Series of Poker in 2008 and his thoughts on the game, his newest business venture, Bloomnation, Venture Capitals, business school, and amazing shouting matches with his two awesome partners.

Our conversation was flowing, David is very easy going, very passionate, and this is what he had to say:

David, tell me a little bit about your background
I finished undergrad at UC, Berkley and got interested in poker. I started playing a lot and got quiet good. Given that Berkley is very liberal, students were allowed to teach classes if they demonstrated strength in a particular subject, so I started teaching probability and statistics of gaming.

Ben Gifford ’10, the valedictorian of his class, left his job at Bridgewater Associates after a year and a half. The next day, he decided to open a San Francisco-based bakery called Double or Muffin, an idea he and his childhood friend and Double or Muffin co-founder Sean Pears conceived while they were at a coffee shop in their hometown of Newton, Mass., according to Gifford.

I'm not surprised in the slightest folks.

Growing up I’ve always known one thing, I want to be my own boss one day. I want to be the decision maker, because frankly, I believe in myself more than most of the bosses I have met and/or been employed by (take that with a grain of salt as I’m still “young” and have yet to report to the C-Suite). Why would anyone who has no desire to work for someone else go to school?

Does entrepreneurship help admission?

How much does starting your own business help for undergrad admission? I am a junior in high school with a 3.6 gpa and 30 ACT. I started my business which manufactures custom made golf putters in 8th grade and i also started selling on ebay in 4th grade. My company was also featured in a magazine. I was wandering how much this would help on admission to schools like Wharton, Harvard, Columbia, Stanford and University of Chicago? I eventually want to go into private equity.Im hoping that this is something outside of the box and will be a closing factor in my admission to one of them since i am always reading how they want someone different and unique. Let me know what you think and the link to my article is below if you are interested in reading.

This may go against what everyone is trying to do here, but what are the exit opportunities for a private equity professional? I have an opportunity to go straight to PE out of undergrad, but could see wanting to leave after several years. Does MM PE give you enough operations experience or would I be better off getting some consulting experience first. I am doing IB internships so my experiences are more deal oriented than strategy.

One thing I've learned through all of this is it ain't for the faint of heart....way too many ups and downs. But, it truly is an exhilarating journey!

btw, I came from a semi, quasi, pseudo target*...lol, if that matters.

Ok so basically I'm graduating, and will hopefully have a job when I graduate in a month and a half at a boutique HF/PE shop. However, I want to start on the side a small firm that is basically a hedge fund, except I'm planning on starting with 10k and may have some other close friends/family that will throw in money as well and although I will do some trading, it will only account for probably 40% of revenue etc. Let's assume the firm I'm working for has no problems with me doing this...I don't want to publicize this or make it my main job, I just want something that I can 1) have on my resume and 2) can track my returns as a business.

I was just wondering what you guys would think would be the best job to have for somebody that's interested in starting their own business on the side/eventually, but has to have steady income at the moment.

It seems like a job with not many hours would be ideal, but it also seems like consulting or vc would be great too. Not sure about IB since I've read that IB isn't as tailored to running a business as it is to running finance.

Consulting seems advantageous TO ME because you learn the inner workings of some businesses, but vc seems like it would be advantageous also because of pretty much the same reason + you have people pitch stuff to you that can get your brain working/inspired.

This is based off of my very limited knowledge about what these types of employees actually deal with.

So... what do you guys think?

I'd like to get some opinions from other people on sites/resources that would be useful for entrepreneurs. One which I found recently was vworker.com. My personal interest is in starting a couple of websites, and this site gives you access to coders all around the world. The process for starting a web based business can be done for less than $10,000, and in terms of further funding, this proof of concept can be brought directly to potential investors (vc's, angels etc.). The manager of First Round Capital describes this here at around 11:30:

http://fora.tv/2010/04/14/Funding_the_Big_Idea_Les...

I also like the ted talks, mainly for the inspiration and different ways of thinking. What do you guys think/like?

Going into Business after few years IB?

Hi, I'm posting this in the Bullpen seeing as it tends to have more readers, hope you don't mind.

Well I have an idea, two ideas actually. One is just a quick flip to make some money. It's basically an internet venture. I don't know whether it will work out or not, but one thing is for sure, it's not a viable business (Sure might be viable for about 5, maybe 7 years, but I don't see it becoming a 20 year thing). If it is successful enough for me to sell it and be acquired, needless to say I won't need to go into IB (At least not as an Analyst). I'm starting it while I'm at college, by the way, so I'll still have time to know whether or not it will be profitable or whether to shut down and IB it out (Please no Facebook references lol)

Entrepreurship in UK with 200,000 GBP

Last night my father offered me 200,000 GBP to get an entrepreneurship Visa at UK and start my own business. I am a prospective monkey but I want to explore this (entrepreneurship) option. What kind of small business can be started in UK with 200,000 GBP? I know this question is very very very vague it depends on location, type of business and all that. But can some one help me get a feel of it. Like is it possible to start a small restaurant in London with 200,000 GBP? What other business should I look into, also any one can suggest any other resources I should use. Any and all advice is welcome.

I have stayed in USA and Singapore but never visited UK.

Why entrepreneurship is much more valuable than IB and PE. Go figure...

Excerpt:

It was just my third year out of college and I made a little over $250,000. For a Brazilian immigrant who spent most of his childhood kind of worried he would have to do physical labor, I felt like I had really made it. My job was challenging (making investing decisions always is) and I worked with some really smart and motivated people.

But, beyond “making it”, I was comfortable. After a year of private equity investing, I felt like I was good enough to do it for the long haul. While I’m sure there would be a few unexpected twists and turns, I sort of knew what the next 20 years of my life were going to be like and it looked pretty good.

Hi guys,

I have worked in business development / strategic FP&A roles at a major BB for the past two years since graduating college- The work, although not as prestigious as IB, was challenging and had some rewarding aspects-

My ultimate goal however is to pursue a JD/MBA at a top program- I performed very well on the LSAT and want to start studying for the GMAT this summer. The latest I would want to start school is 2012/2013.

That being said, I have been offered a promotion, (out of my analyst program), to AVP- I am weighing that against returning home and helping to manage my family business, an ethnic restaurant in Western PA, before I return to school. (Approx 850K in FY Revenue)

First, a limited background:

Graduating UG next month, non-target school, second-tier U.S. financial city, embarrassing GPA...

1) Work in my current city for a serial-entrepreneur (HBS grad) with high responsibility and visibility. Supposedly starting two entities and selling another in the future. I will be an excel model junkie and involved in all financing and deal structures of these entities.

Cons:
-Risky and speculative but that's entrepreneurship right?! Being a recent grad I know this is the time to take risks but at the same time want to establish myself with a "known" role for future opportunities.

So, I recently left my job and became an independent real estate consultant. The pay cut has been...well, massive. I've only been in the business for about 2 weeks right now, and with current work flow, I'm on the road to making about $25,000 per year, net of expenses. I guess for 12 days in the business, it's not too bad--I'm sure that'll become substantially better in the future. That said, man, I don't think I could ever work a regular salaried job again. I feel...free. For the first time in my life, I feel free.

I honestly see now why people become entrepreneurs, even if it means longer hours and less pay. The human condition is programmed to seek freedom, at least for many people. If you're wired that way, you'll take a more arduous path in exchange for freedom.

sup?

So I just finished The Social Network, and although encouraged by a few drinks I think this movie is going to be the next Wall Street.

I say this in the sense that Wall Street inspired so many young men to study and improve their understanding of business in thinking this was the next gateway to nirvana. I feel that the Social Network and the detailed story, although told with the troubled personality of Mr. Zuckerberg thrown over the viewer like an extremely heavy overcoat, displays the possibilities of owning ones own ideas and running with them.

Obviously though this movie could have painted mark in a different light but, taking that into account can it be seen that this movie has strong inspirational qualities?

Trying to make a decision between investment banking in NYC or joining well funded small tech startup as a CTO. For going to bschool, which is better if the startup is successful? not successful? I think startup up would stick out more in an application pool since there are hundreds of banking resumes, but would it be better to get in. I'm guessing startup would be better to go into VC. Looking at it, the startup would probably be more fun as I would have a better work/life balance for sure, but I want to make the right career move too.
