Success Failure

I just got done watching Start-Up Junkies on HULU. Pretty cool documentary and does a great job of showing how the start-up process works. At the beginning of the show they reiterate the old stat that 9/10 start-ups fail. I call BS. http://smallbusinessplanned.com/information/small-...

So my question to those in VC, what has been the failure rate from your experience?

I’m going to come out and say it straight away. I hope you guys don’t get Front Office jobs. I hope you don’t even get Middle Office or Back Office jobs. In fact, I hope you enter a field as far removed from finance as possible.

No, this isn’t some TED talk or a motivational speech where I tell you to pursue your passion. This is from a guy who spent a ton of money, endured hundreds of awkward networking calls, and risked firms calling the police on him to break into the industry.

This is from a guy who is horrible at interviews and had to spend eight hours a day practicing his answers to common behavioral questions like “Tell me about a team situation” in front of the mirror and in front of friends.

This is from a guy that’s currently working for next to nothing (by any reasonable standard) in order to gain experience and start building his career. I don’t want to be competing against thousands of kids for the same spot. I don’t even want to be competing against a hundred (again, bad at interviews).

Go ahead, throw your rotten tomatoes, monkey shit at me. I don’t care. Trade places with me and see the reality. Most of us are entry level grunts and we’re all completely interchangeable.

Guys,

I'm a non-target student and I'm not doing so well this semester because Im spending too much time searching for an internship. I haven't landed an SA offer yet and the process of searching for one is really ruining my grades.

I can still take some classes Pass/Fail. Doing this will keep my 3.7 . Otherwise, I'd probably get a few CS this semester and end with a 3.5 for fall recruiting. The damage has been done and I don't think I can still manage very high grades by this point.

Heres the fucked up part. I already have more than a couples Ws (1 each semester since I have a bad habit of signing up for too much, like this semester). adding a few Ps to it will make things look bad.

I'm now a junior, an international student from a non-target (maybe semi-target regionally). Did a couple first rounds and made it to 1 superday - didn't work out too well and now I feel like my life is over.

I have been dreaming of being an investment banker since freshmen - since then I study hard, network hard and every alum I talked to believe that I am doing all the right things.

Today when I was talking with my contact, he told me that you simply need some luck with this kind of market and my best bet is to get an MBA after several years. I agree but giving up now after being so committed to one job for 2.5 years since freshmen year is very tough.

Former Ravens cornerback Chris McAlister made tens of millions of dollars in his NFL career, but he now says that he’s so broke he can’t afford to take care of himself or his child.

In court documents obtained by TMZ, McAlister wrote, “I have been unemployed since 2009. I have no income. . . . I live in my parent’s home. My parents provide me with my basic living expenses as I do not have the funds to do so.”

McAlister is asking the court to lower his $11,000 a month child support obligation to his ex-wife.

Curious to see what people have to say -- back in undergrad, the majority of my economics professors liked to give brutally hard exams that usually ended up with the class having F's or D's (also heard this about the engineering classes having brutally low low grades too) for the class average and then they would obviously curve upward but the reason the class did so poorly was usually because they would test ALL the material. this was good in the fact if you studied one section a lot you were going to have to use it in the exam vs other exams where you may spend hours studying a topic but then have nothing on the exam for it. what was everyone elses test experience like, esp other econ kids?

FAQ: What not to do - Communications

Return to Main FAQ Page

What Not to Do Part #5: Communication

Think very carefully about the emails and all written communication you send out. The banks you intern at hope that you have a great time during your internship, but they're not all-forgiving in the interest of a good time. This is especially true for your analyst bosses and fellow interns. If you do something immensely stupid, pompous, or uncouth, and you're stupid enough to put it in writing and send it to multiple people, you can expect to find yourself on Dealbreaker or Snopes:

What Not to Do Part #1: Models & Bottles

Here we have a young man who is greatly enjoying his time working for an investment bank. He's got a Porsche, goes to hot clubs, hangs with some (kinda, I guess) hot models, and doesn't mind blowing a bunch of cash. Is there a problem with that? Not at all. Should someone broadcast their extravagant lifestyle choices on television for the world to see when you haven't made Managing Director/Partner? Probably not. Should you do this while the financial sector is going through one of the worst periods in history? (Exercise 1: Insert best possible guess here.)

More reasons to not smoke

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42430714

A 31-year-old Wall Street executive plummeted to his death after opening a window of his fifth-floor Upper East Side apartment to smoke a cigarette.
Keith Mastronardi cracked open the waist-high window Sunday evening after having a few drinks so that the cigarette smoke wouldn't disturb his wife and 11-week-old daughter, who were also in the room, according to multiple reports.
He apparently lost his balance and tumbled to the courtyard below. Police do not believe any criminality is involved and the investigation is ongoing.
Mastronardi's wife, Debra, had to be taken to the hospital for observation after the incident. The couple has three children, all under the age of 5.

So I basically spend my whole day researching companies and pitch MDs into considering me as an analyst. I graduated from non-target, is in HK, bla bla bla won't bore you with details.

The firm I was looking at publishes an Asian Equity Markets (which mostly describes Hong Kong) newsletter on a weekly basis, but on their website they list their most recent newsletter as January 31st, 2011. So I thought to myself, BINGO, that's my point of entry. They must be SOOOOO busy that they're not updating the all-important ECM newsletter. Below is the e-mail I sent to the MD, Head of Asia ECM:

Subject: Help with Newsletter?

Dear [MD],

I am a tri-lingual graduate (English/Mandarin/Cantonese) from [non-target, US]

Lately there has been lots of talk on this forum about sacrificing the safety and security of finance for the risk and reward of entrepreneurship.

We've all heard the unprecedented success stories; Zuckerberg, Mason etc.

And while Patrick here at WSO and Brian at M&I might not be receiving multi-billion dollar valuations any time soon, both of them make more money and have more free time than they ever did working in finance.

These guys are all successful. What I want to hear about is guys who tried and failed. Does anyone have stories of people who jumped off the track and fell flat on their face? Why did they fail? What would they have done differently? Where are they now?

Anyone?

So I've tried to go ahead and bring this topic up before but : what does everyone think of real estate prices, esp in the NYC area? I think NYC is still hovering around 06-05 AT BEST pricing with 3x multiples on various areas in Manhattan and Brooklyn (100k bk heights 1 bed is 300k now etc) 01 02 prices. are these the new new or are we awaiting a very sticky, government supported death/slide that is taking forever? Tons of inventory, rates going up = prices going down? , or are these what we should get used to? Is NYC a super anomaly or are people just refusing to lower their prices?

The Perceived vs. Actual amount of times a girl has been railed

So, for the purpose of this post, I am asking you all a question:

When you look at a girl can you, yourself, accurately judge how many times her vag has been crushed?

In my case, I am usually close to the number about 50% of the time. Now, I don't necessarily mean you have to guess it perfectly but closer is better. Also, I know many of you are probably thinking "how do we find out the actual number".

Simple:

1) When you crush her, you will know.
2) If you are with her, there will be subtle clues
3) Ask her friends (in a way that doesn't make you look like a tool)

Lastly, When you guys are choosing a girl to be your girl, do you take the whole "how many times has she been crushed" question into consideration?
