I am a current MD student at one of Stanford/Harvard, and am considering picking up an MBA while I'm here (interests in nonprofit hospital management). Given that I am a straight-through student (0 income; ample debt from med tuition), what amount of need-based aid/grants should I realistically expect to receive? (I'm told these schools have generous aid, but wasn't able to find any relevant figures online.) Thanks!

Financial Aid In Top 15 Business Schools

Hi, I may apply to business school in 2-3 years and was wondering what the financial aid situation is like for the top 15 business schools. According to poetsandquants.com it looks like it costs 150-160k total.

I looked online and it seems there are 3 kinds of financial aid: loans, need based grants, and scholarships. It seems grants are harder to get for business school than in undergrad. I have 3 questions:

1.Is there an online calculator that will properly adjust the cost of attendance to inflation 2-3 years from now?
2.My credit isn't great and I don't know how much if any scholarship money I can get because I haven't taken the GMAT yet, so what can I do to maximize the amount of grant money I get?

Financial aid at business schools and my personal savings

I'm planning on having saved a good amount of money by the time I get to business school, but my parents make little money so I would likely qualify for a ton of need-based assistance. My question is the following: does having a large amount of assets when entering business school significantly hinder the amount of grants/scholarships I get? If so, I would definitely plan on saving a lot less my first four years out of college... No point in saving up all this money if it means a proportional reduction in business school financial aid grants, right?

Work-study only jobs

Any opinion on the ethics and legality of work-study only jobs?

If a respectable job is work-study only, then the work-study recipients have an undue advantage in terms of how their resume will look after they get that job. We're already giving the less wealthy population financial aid. Do you agree that work-study only jobs give an undue advantage to the work-study population over the non-work study population?

mod (Andy) note: "Blast from the past - Best of Eddie" - This one is originally from May 2010. If there's an old post from Eddie you'd like to see up again shoot me a message.

You'd think creativity would count for something. Adam Wheeler, a 23-year old from Delaware, is being charged with larceny, identity theft, and fraud after faking his way into Harvard and taking the school for $45,000 in scholarships, grants, and financial aid. Step aside jeffrey chiang. Take a seat Aleksey Vayner. There's a new kid in the bullshitter's Cooperstown.

Wheeler didn't take any half-steps in his scam, either. He not only claimed to have earned a perfect academic record at Phillips Academy to gain admission to Harvard in 2007, he backed up the claim with a falsified transcript from MIT. He might have gotten away with it too, if he hadn't pushed the envelope by later applying for Rhodes and Fulbright scholarships.

"This defendant's actions cheated those who competed honestly and fairly for admissions and for the scholarships that this defendant fraudulently obtained," Leone said.
