Anyone have any contacts they'd recommend from CPI? I've been having a tough time getting in touch with them. I'm looking more at top growth equity shops/later stage venture firms in the northeast. That said, anyone at the firm that you've had a good experience with would be appreciated. Feel free to PM me so as not to out their emails on the public forum.

Thanks.

Headhunter has opportunity- ok to contact alumni at firm?

I know this has been discussed, but I would like people's view on this particular situation:

A headhunter has presented an opportunity, and there is a school alumni that works at the particular firm. Is it okay to tell the headhunter that you are interested in the role and also reach out to the alumni saying a headhunter recently presented an opportunity with their firm and wanted to speak with them about the role/firm? What if the headhunter doesn't think the role is "the right fit", can you still reach out to the alumni to see if you can get in the door through them?

Guys before everyone starts bashing at me, I am going to add a disclaimer. This has been my first experience with headhunters, and I have little friends who have worked in the IBD industry before. Plus, more importantly, I am a paranoid of "Grade A" type. Yep seriously.

I work at a mid-tier BB in IBD and am a first year. All the news of further downsizing at my BB had been mentally wrecking me, so I decided to look for M&A roles in other banks. I came across a posting on a headhunter firm's website and emailed the contact person for that job. My email was very generic:

Do any of you know of headhunters who specialize in Consulting? I am not looking for one who works with consultants for exit opps. I am looking for one who will help a friend get into consulting. I work for a 2nd tier consulting firm in IT but my company does not have any positions in the area he is looking for. I am looking for a head hunter in the New York/SF area who recruits for Kurt Salmon/Huron/PwC etc. The only one I have heard of is Glocap from Management Consulted.

Thanks for your help!

Hi all,

this goes to all people who are currently in PE or who went through PE recruiting: does anybody have any experience with the above recruiting firm? From what I can take from their website, they mostly recruit for firms in London and on the continent. Any experiences would be greatly appreciated.

My background: I am a 1st year analyst in a Top 5 BB industry group in London and haven't had much modelling experience so far. While I am generally interested in PE, I don't really want to move at this point since I don't think I have acquired enough technical skills yet.

I receive very positive feedback on my work and would say I have a very good work ethic, also I get along well with all the people I have worked with so far.

Headhunters for Entry-level S&T positions?

Hi,

I'm currently in a tough spot and I would like to utilize every possibility possible.
I just graduated and I don't think I qualify for the S&T analyst programs. I think my only way to obtain an analyst/entry-level S&T position is either through networking or headhunters.
Do you think there are headhunters in NYC that place new graduates in entry-level S&T positions?

Thanks.

Fellow monkeys,

I am a London based banker looking to exit after 2 years in M&A. I can honestly say I have fallen out of love with many elements of traditional Finance and am not excited by the prospects of working at a Hedge Fund (interned at one as well) or in Private Equity. Instead, I would like to hear about any headhunters you have come across in London with opportunities outside of the main paths. This could include: VC, Corp Dev, Start-ups, Player valuation at a major Football Club (colleague jumped there) etc.

Any thoughts, comments or suggestions are welcomed.

Peas and carrots,

How to connect my friend with headhunter

My friend just quit and is searching for a new job in IR or general finance role (have rich experience in both). I have a few finance headhunter contacts that used to contact me for some job opportunities (turned them down but got their emails or connected on linkedin).

How do I go about helping my friend? Should I just email these headhunters out of blue introducing my friend (copy his linkedin profile and roughly mention he is looking for A,B,C field and please keep an eye if there are any matches?)

Don't want to be too abrut or rude as I don't know these headhunters well, also don't want to hard sell my friend (might look too desperate)

Anyone has experience in this?

Thanks a lot!

Advice on this situation? Recently a headhunter arranged for me to meet the regional head of equity research at a large bank. Not for a specific opening, but he felt that the guy would be interested in my background. We got along very well and he felt I could make a good contribution to the business, but unfortunately he only had headcount for some specific sector hires. At first he said we should meet for drinks after a month or two, but just days later he arranged through the headhunter for me to meet with another manager. This is someone previously very senior who has come out of retirement to work on a special initiative.

So I did a search and it seems like this topic does not get any responses.

I'm looking to lateral (or start as a first year again) because I am not getting the best experience, especially in M&A at my current "MM" bank in NYC. I'm fine going to a boutique or a MM, in fact it's almost preferred as the deal teams tend to be lean and I want the added responsibility.

So as the post says, I really want to lateral to Chicago and am looking for names of any headhunters. So far I have only been able to come up with Harris McCall and am even looking into dropping my resume into the PEAC resume book hoping that maybe I'll get picked up by a lower tier PE shop and work my way up to something better.

whats the best way to get in touch with head hunters for open positions in fixed income and PE shops?

Is it common practice for S&T not get as much exposure?

Finally - can anyone send me some names of headhunters I can reach out too?

Thanks so much for the help!

So i have known a few headhunters now and know a good one is fuckin hard to find. These days ive been approached quite a few times by them and some have really peaked my interest. Which leads to me to my damn question.

Are headhunters to be trusted? Like I got my job now through one. When i want to switch should I tell them? I am afraid that they might alert hr with the purpose of refilling the same position. This will ultimately be a bitch in the case I do not secure an offer by then. Has this ever happened to anyone?

I want to tell my headhunter that Im looking to jump but you know these mofos can never be trusted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What are peoples experiences when looking for a job while you are employed - how is the level of confidentiality when working with headhunters etc? I have doubts that the fact that you are looking will remain a secret within your current employment since the finance world can be very small.

If that happens and in case you have been asked by someone (with seniority) in your current job about whether you are looking, what would you say? Confess the truth? Deny everything? Or say something vage, like i'm not seriously looking.

Please let me know your thoughts and experience.

Thanks

I keep getting contacted by headhunters asking for my help in "finding appropriate candidates" for position XYZ. Is there any point in actually making an effort to help out? I'm thinking it's a waste of time. However, some people believe it's a good way to build strong relationships with headhunters, and that those relationships will be beneficial if I decide to make a move to a different industry. Thoughts?

Abnormal Headhunter Activity?

Steve Mallory's picture

 on 1/24/12 at 7:35pm

It is the time of the year when headhunter activity increases, but I have seen more this year than in years past. The number of calls looking to fill positions rather than recruit candidates has picked up (i.e. demand first and supply second, which is very different from supply first, demand second).

Is anyone else seeing this? Could be 1) headhunters simply trying to gauge sentiment at banks (i.e. not looking to place you, but seeing if you are going to be joining the labor supply); 2) an exodus of unhappy employees already leaving other banks (i.e. labor demand is real); or 3) playing the annual musical chairs game (i.e. trying to trade labor between banks for fees).

Thoughts? Definitely more "are you looking?" calls than "do you know of openings?" calls.

Hello,

Can anyone provide some insight on working in finance in Asia (particularly Mainland China)? I grew up in the US and am working currently an IBD analyst in the US at a bulge bracket firm. I do have the language capability to work in China.

I would be interested in either working for a western fund, or for a local up-and coming but reputable firm, Hony, Saif, CDH, New Horizon are just some of the names in China I've come across on the web. Any other key players I should look into?

PE recruiting - any need to be careful/discerning when giving info to headhunters?

Hola,

IB analyst here, just starting to get into the process of PE recruiting.

Here's my question - if random headhunters (ie other than the very well-known ones) reach out to me for my info/resume in order to try and work with me for the PE recruiting cycle, is there any harm in giving it to them? Is there some reason that I should only share my info with the most prominent firms? Is there a risk of headhunters just throwing my resume all over the place in an undesirable way? Or do I have nothing to lose from taking any shot that I have?

Thanks,

Telling headhunters your compensation

I need some advice from fellow monkeys. So lately I've been getting phonecalls from quite a few headhunters, and inevitably they ask me what my current base salary and bonus is. When I tell them the number, they are stunned that it's so low, and I then have to explain to them that the fund is having problems and that my boss has outright screwed me over. One headhunter said that firms might see this and think that i'm not valuable or that the work i'm doing is not important due to the low compensation. And that could hurt my chances of getting an offer.

So what can I possibly do to rectify this? I have no control over it, which makes this situation unbearably frustrating. I suppose I can always show them my desk's pnl to prove that i'm not full of shit.

hi guys,

just had an intro meeting with a headhunter.........at the end of the meeting, the headhunter was interested in sending my resume to a PE shop (really small shop)......i have no interest in what they invest in.......is it okay to nicely tell the headhunter no and explain i would rather leverage my background (i have a science background) and go to a more life sciences orientated pe firm? i heard that telling headhunters no is bad since it shows you're not ready to be serious and it can quickly break your relationship up with the headhunter

Hi Everyone,

I am working as an in house M&A analyst now and I have built some connections at a Canadian Bank in Toronto.

I know one 3rd year analyst really well and had indirect contact with a MD (My mentor passed my info on to the MD then to the hiring associate but there weren’t any openings in December). I still sent hand written thank you cards to the MD and the associate after.

Recently I spoke to Vlaadco (headhunter) and got my resume passed on to an industry group at the same bank for a potential opening. It’s been a week and it’s still under review.
