In search of Prestige...

rodneymullen's picture

UBS London

I start out at UBS (London office) this summer as a first year analyst.

I'm aiming to move into PE, or hedge fund at some point down the line, so I want to pick a team that's both highly regarded, and allows for the neccessary exposure and techinical experience for these respective roles.

Firstly, I wondered if anyone could tell me which UBS teams are highly regarded, specifically in the London office,

And secondly, which teams would set me up for PE and hedge fund respectively, or if there is a team which can do both - allowing me to leave my options open for a while.

I was looking at lev fin/ financial sponsors group so as to work with PE players and gain relevant experience, but I don't think UBS is very good at LV/FS due to the very small and combined nature of the team, and some previous ranking tables I've seen. Please help!!!

Much appreciated,

Rod

Search for an Internship!

rok2's picture
by rok2 User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 4 Banana Points Points) on 3/8/10 at 2:49am

I am having problems finding an internship with a bank. I attend Lehigh University with a double major in Finance and Accounting. I have an overall GPA of 3.55 and a Finance GPA of 3.8. However, I think my lack of a corporate experience is preventing me from obtaining interviews and internships. The only experience I have had are school projects, my personal trading portfolio, and an externship with JPMorgan.

What should I do with my summer because the recruiting season is basically over? Why I am not getting any interviews with any investment banks?

Thesis on Trading/Finance Help

Insiderrr's picture
by Insiderrr User's RSS Feed (Monkey, 31 Banana Points Points) on 3/6/10 at 11:18pm

Hey guys,

I am doing an honours in Finance this year for my undergrad degree. As such I need to do a thesis. My interests lie in e trading strategies, option theory, derivatives, market-making etc...essentially anything to do with trading. I don't have a strong programming background apart from intermediate skills on SAS.

Atm my advisor suggesting reading through a journal based on the BUY Write and Put index. Although I am not entirely sure what direction I can take this.

Anyone have any good ideas for an interesting topic? Greatly appreciated.

Associate after top MBA worth it?

citibanka23's picture
by citibanka23 User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 2 Banana Points Points) on 3/4/10 at 3:17am

First time post, long time lurker here. So I ended up with a FT offer from Citi in IBD and will be starting soon. I come from a good ivy and have a 3.5+ GPA.

I was wondering if it is worth it to become an post-mba associate at a tier 1 elite boutique. I'm pretty much in love with one of the elite boutiques and the culture, but I couldn't quite close the superday so I'm really bummed about it, but I know it isn't the end of the world.

Given that I just entered the work force I feel I have way less flexibility to go about things even though I'm young, but I still want another shot at that elite boutique. I kind of feel like I messed up badly because being an associate means you're committed to banking but I don't want to do banking as a career, probably PE or VC. Can I still jump to a top PE as an associate or will they expect you to stay and never support you leaving (no recommendations, mad at you) ?

Thanks.

Internship Questions from a Non Target

dfjay89's picture
by dfjay89 User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 11 Banana Points Points) on 2/22/10 at 7:36pm

So I've been reading this site a couple times a week for the past couple months while searching for summer internships. I go to USC (South Carolina) and I'm a double major in Econ and Finance with a 3.91 GPA as well as an officer for my Fraternity. And I'm having an absolute horrendous time finding an internship. I've started networking and all that jazz even had a couple informal lunches with some guys at MS Smith Barney.

My question is simple, do I stand a chance at getting a job somewhere in New York this late? Or even in Charlotte or some other smaller hub? I have an offer to work unpaid here in SC at a tiny local investment firm. I'm looking to be an analyst eventually and hopefully break into IB at some point (knock on wood) and since I know breaking into IB directly from a non target is virtually impossible I figured I'd have to start elsewhere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

UBS PWM vs. Goldman Operations

Fawkes's picture
by Fawkes User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 4 Banana Points Points) on 2/21/10 at 11:43pm

I am currently trying to decide between two internship offers for this summer: UBS PWM and Goldman Operations. I am not certain what my long-term goals are so I am more concerned with which internship will give me more useful experience in the finance industry. Any advice would be much appreciated.

offer 1)
Sales position in Derviatives (on trading floor). Institutional clients (very big). Company is no1 in the dervis industry and ETF, Structured notes. Looking to expand into FX flow and improve options MM. So i guess there will be a lot of work to do, and its likely to be fun.

offer2)
Corporate client (not institi)FX trading desk in number 1 firm in the country in the business. You advise clients on the markets, put on their trades, and take prop positions somtimes yourself.

About me: im a perfect Sales-Trading Hybrid. Quanty, not too quanty, and can sell, speak and express myself well.
I think i could do both equally well, and both tickle me the right way.

Advice for Analyst

EagleSpread's picture
by EagleSpread User's RSS Feed (Senior Monkey, 93 Banana Points Points) on 2/18/10 at 2:53pm

Quick Background: I went from target school to BB bank in S&T and worked on a niche equty derivs structuring desk since I graduated 2 years ago. I recently was laid off, and I'm moving back to chicago for personal reasons.

Question: I've been networking pretty hard, searching online job posts, and cold emailing hedge funds, but with not much luck (2 interviews, rejected after final round). Does anyone have any advice or places to start in Chicago? I don't have a great GPA that would stand out and get me an interview and it's hurting, but I have good experience at a bank in nyc, and I'm willing to start at the bottom again in something along the lines of trading assistant at a hedge fund, or energy firm or something as a trading analyst. Headhunters not working so much as I have no IB experience.

Also, my dream job is at a VC firm somewhere down the road, so if anyone has any advice on that, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

SA Decision-making Help

ASU is legit's picture

Goldman, Barclays, Credit Suisse, or UBS for SA. Taking heavily into consideration the probability of recieving FT (assuming I'm not retarded), which is the best? (not just brand name - culture should be considered too).

Related: anyone know the current offer rates SA --> FT at Goldman?

RBC Summer Internship Investment Banking 2010 London

kdogg's picture
by kdogg User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 8 Banana Points Points) on 2/15/10 at 11:48am

Hi everyone,

I recently applied for a summer internship at RBC Capital Markets, Investment Banking, Summer Analyst 2010 in London

I have been asked to complete the verbal reasoning test, but have not recieved an invitation to do the numerical test (if there is one).

I would appreciate if someone on this forum applied to the same programme and will be able to share their experience on this matter.

If I didnt get an invitation to complete the numerical test, does that mean I have been rejected, or they still processing the application?

I applied just before the deadline

Thanks guys!

DB > MS a mad decision?

Artemicion's picture
by Artemicion User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 4 Banana Points Points) on 2/15/10 at 1:21am

Internship offers from DB and MS. S&T roles, identical (in London). I'm gonna take DB.
Is this crazy?
I know MS are the bigger name, but it's a different world. As I see it:

DB are more innovative, gonna be important
I to some extent want to do FI, and MS are dead there. However, I would like to keep myself open desk-wise so won't only choose based on that.
DB aren't about to have the shit regulated out of them to the extent US banks are, and will be able to deal with it better (being all innovative and stuff) if they do.
DB kept better people/gained better people.
I can learn more faster at DB.
DB paid a higher portion of profits last year as bonus (let's not forget the things that matter here).

Any advice here? This is not an easy decision, and I realize I'm a bit crazy, but everyone I've met at DB has been a serious legend determined to get shit done, MS seems just a bit relaxed...

Two Superday interviews on the same day with different divisions of same firm

luckycharms's picture
by luckycharms User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 3 Banana Points Points) on 2/14/10 at 7:48pm

So by some random chance, I ended up with two Superday interviews on the same day for a BB (but different divisions). I was just notified by the 2nd division today and the interviews overlap.

Could I please have some advice on what to do in this situation? I really would love to work for the firm but I don't want to screw over my chances by pissing both of the divisions off.

Any help would be appreciated.

OFFERS HELP me choose plz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wallstreetmojo's picture
by wallstreetmojo User's RSS Feed (Monkey, 62 Banana Points Points) on 2/14/10 at 6:06am

I was going to accept Citi IBD NYC offer but i got an offer from top BB (GS/MS) in their GCM department..

The difference in prestige seems quite large...however, one is IBD, and the other is Global Capital Markets.

Which one should I choose? This is just SA position, and I want to leverage to FT in IBD...Citi doesn't seem like a bank I'd want to work FT however...would having top BB on my resume help me more?
