Investment Management

graduate22's picture

Hi all,

I have recently started becoming more interested in the investment management side of the industry, however feel that I do not know as much about it as I would like to. If anyone knows of any good resources (websites, books etc.) that explain the industry, and different roles available in it, I would be really grateful!

It would also be really helpful if someone could explain the basics of asset allocation, or just point me in the right direction.

Many thanks

Knowing What You Really Want

LIBOR's picture
by LIBOR User's RSS Feed (Gorilla, 708 Banana Points Points) on 7/21/10 at 2:46pm

Hey all,

As I've mentioned on here before, I'm going to be a senior in the fall, and I currently work in the BO of a BB. I go to a non-target (no OCR, but we do have lots of street alum). Anyway, I've been able to land several informational interviews, both through my school's alumni network and by contacts that I have made in the FO at my bank.

Coming from a school with no OCR is tough. I would be willing to work in banking, capital markets, trading or research. The fact is, I have no idea exactly what I want to do, and its tough to be fussy, since the fact is, I'd be grateful to have a job in any of those areas.

Need SA Info / Help

Richard's picture
by Richard User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 3 Banana Points Points) on 7/19/10 at 4:10pm

Hello Friends,

I need some advice in regard to obtaining a BB SA internship position for the following summer. I go to a University of London school and have two summer's worth of boutique bank experience. I'm curious of the ratio of students who obtain internships based on networking and connections compared to going through the actual process. How does the actual process occur? Is it entirely through a University program, or is there an individual aspect to it?

Any help in getting started as soon as possible would be amazing, with the ultimate target being a solid SA position at a BB, whether that be in the States or UK.

Cheers,

Dick

HELP! Will Citigroup care?

ichimoku's picture
by ichimoku User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 2 Banana Points Points) on 7/18/10 at 12:51am

I have just finished a round of interviews at Citi and I'm waiting to hear back from them. I'm a bit worried about giving a solid first impression, so please bear with me. I currently have checking and savings accounts with Bank of America. Will Citigroup care that I have a Bank of America account? Would it be wise to open up a Citi checking account and transfer all of my funds? Thank you for your input.

Acquisition Financing Model

bpdallas314's picture

Does anyone have a good example of an acquisition financing model? I'm new to the business and trying to learn how to do modeling. For example, trying to find optimum mix of secured debt and mezzanine financing for particular projects by plugging in different percentages. Again, show how 5% secured debt and 12% mezzanine compares cost wise to 4% secured and 10% mezzanine debt.

What are some signs that your girlfriend is cheating on you? Whenever I mention this guy she shifts her eyes weirdly like she has something to hide. I think she might be seeing someone else, what are some signs and maybe she is jealous?

Thoughts on improving trust in our relationship?

Finding Price from Yield-to-Maturity

econ's picture
by econ User's RSS Feed (Senior Orangutan, 382 Banana Points Points) on 7/12/10 at 8:51pm

I'm reading Bruce Tuckman's Fixed Income book, and I'm trying to use one of the formulas to find a bond price from a yield. The problem is, the answer I'm getting seems like it has to be wrong (it's way too low to make any intuitive sense). So what exactly am I doing wrong?

Suppose a bond has a coupon of 5.75% (paid semi-annually), a yield of 4.525, and matures in 2-years.

Tuckman's book says: Price = (coupon/2) / (1 + yield/2)^1 + (coupon/2) / (1 + yield/2)^2 + (coupon/2) / (1 + yield/2)^3 + (face + coupon/2) / (1 + yield/2)^4

So, I let the face equal 100, the coupon equal 5.75, and the yield equal 4.525. This gives Price = (2.875) / (3.2625)^1 + (2.875) / (3.2625)^2 + (2.875) / (3.2625)^3 + (102.875) / (3.2625)^4 = 2.034003

Help: Prev 5 Years M&A Transactions

abcwso123's picture
by abcwso123 User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 3 Banana Points Points) on 7/12/10 at 4:35am

Hi,

I'm doing some research and need to find a database of all M&A transactions that have occurred in the past 5 years for consumer goods, including health & beauty brands, food and snacks, automobiles, electronics, etc.

Does anyone know how I can find this information? Would libraries have it for free? Or could someone with access help me run a search please??

Thanks so much!

F'ed up Jr year...can i still make it.

dumbasscollegekid's picture
by dumbasscollegekid User's RSS Feed (Senior Chimp, 25 Banana Points Points) on 6/21/10 at 6:31pm

So due to some pretty shitty non-school related issues of my own, my GPA dropped below a 3.0 after this past semester, with me failing 2 absolute BS classes. I mean total joke, gimme an A type of deals. However, i still have solid GPA's in both of my majors (3.4 with the hardest parts out of the way). Also, i'll have some other supplements to my resume that could really help out, or so i think. First i have a glowing rec from the most well respected professor in my field of study, who i completed a very well reviewed independent study with. I've also interned the past two summers (and over winter break) for a pretty large insurance company in their investments department doing a lot of back office type work.

Applied, should she contact HR??

JohnnyCage's picture
by JohnnyCage User's RSS Feed (Senior Baboon, 210 Banana Points Points) on 6/16/10 at 11:00pm

So my friend recently applied for a job at a BB. She was sent the link by a friend who worked at the bank through the 'recommend this job to a friend' function. He also managed to find out who the HR director in charge of the recruitment is and her contact info.

So how should she contact this lady? What should she say? What is the protocol? Should she wait to see if they want to contact her or should she reach out to them first? (Its been 2 days)

Also anyone know of success stories through this?

-Thanks
