How much does your decisions from the ages of 12 - 18 determine your future/overall happiness in life?

Gotta make this quick - at work.

After reading the risible, lambaste worthy & somberful post of "biggest life regrets"

http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/the-single-b...

It's evident for MOST of the posters on this forum (whom I'm guessing are <25, 21?) loathe their college decisions, root cause being their high school decisions thus by transitive property loathe high school decisions.

Seems like many people would like a do-over in life because their models & bottles dreams never materialized (or never will). Honestly, thought the posts were hysterical. It seems like it’s too bad that many of you weren’t conceived in Amy Chua’s womb.

I would like to share with you WSOers my story. If 'nothing else, at least it will be a good summary for me.

I have not really achieved anything big yet but I feel I'm on the good path and decided to write my mind/story/thought out. In a nutshell the story is about me starting trading at the age of 14, what I experienced, getting into being passionate about economics, trading, it's becoming my only one real interest which I would love to spend time with.

For the people that went to these top boarding school especially in New England, is it incredibly easy(ier) to get into an elite university/ivy compared to a public school? Just looking at the college placements at some of these schools is insane.

For me, I was a slacker in high school. I cared about academics and wanted to do better but somehow just never found the way for myself to go hard enough to do well enough to get into a good college after HS. However, once I got into college, I was super dedicated my first year to transfer to a better university and worked harder than some of the top kids from my HS. Dramatic change in motivation and maturity in just one year.

Anyone else experienced any big change?

Hey Monkey's,
A few friends and I from my high-school are in the midst of planning a New York trip in the spring as part of a school requirement. We are hoping to visit the New York Stock Exchange, but in order to enter you need a broker, as we found out in previous years. Basically if anyone could help us through this procedure (any brokers?) it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I was talking to a female friend of mine who happens to be an atheist last week, and she was telling me about how she attended a church in NYC just to get to get in good with the head of admissions at the preschool she wanted her son to attend who also happened to be a member of that church. Ultimately, her kid didn't make the cut. We laughed about it, of course, but it shows the lengths to which some parents will go to give their kid a leg up in life.

So I guess it stands to reason that some parents think it makes sense to spend $43,000 a year for high school. Yup, you read that right. 43 GRAND. A year. As in $200,000 for a high school diploma.

Predictably, 47 of the 50 most expensive high schools in America are located in the Northeast, with the three outliers located in California. And I think it's important to note that the quoted tuition figures do not include room and board; it's just straight tuition. So what exactly are you walking away with (aside from a high school diploma and a bunch of Marc Ecko gear) after your folks cough up two hundred grand?

Keeping in touch with friends from HS/College

Hi,

I will be going to College this fall, and as I am seeing some of my friends that I have known throughout High School and some through my entire childhood fly off to prestigious schools including Harvard, Brown, Cornell and Princeton I can't help but wonder if I will be able to keep in touch with them.

My main questions are did you keep in touch with friends from HS? Were they of any networking help in your later years if you did? Today are you closer with friends made in college or HS?

I did very poorly in high school (though I picked things up now) and was always wondering why I did so bad. I was talking with my dad about it and he blamed the group of kids I hung out with and said it was a bad environment to put myself into and provided no motivation for me to succeed. The group of guys I hung out with weren't "bad" kids per say, just REALLY lazy and never took anything seriously.

Anyone else have the same feeling regarding their friends back in HS? Maybe I'm putting too much emphasis on them and just giving myself excuses.

The University of Arizona’s Michael Staten, Director of the Take Charge America Institute for Financial Education and Research commissioned a national poll sampling 878 students from 18 high schools across 11 states that was conducted by The Financial Literacy Group. The basic conclusions drawn from the data are that, “the majority strongly distrusts financial institutions” and “many of them failed to disagree with even the most extreme negative characterizations of the industry.” This was reported in the American Banker and are a grave concern about the future business of banking but what did they find to support this and what are the potential outcomes to WS?

Looking Back at High School: Undergrad Admissions

Was wondering what other people thought on this:

I went to a top magnet high school where Ivy and Ivy+ adcom came to give information sessions to interested students every year. Out of a graduating class of 250 or so, the top 20% of us all went to top 20 colleges, with multiple Ivy, Duke, Stanford, etc admissions.

These info sessions were usually less than 10 students, and we got significant time with the head admissions officer(s) for our region. Now, I was a lazy fuck in high school so I never really went to these info sessions, but I just thought about the potential implications of networking with these admissions officers and leaving a good impression on them. Essentially what numerous monkeys on this site are doing by contacting alumni, trying to break into banking.

16 year old hedge fund manager.jpg

I'm gonna start off by talking about myself a little bit. I'm 16 years old and I'm a junior in a high school in the suburbs surrounding NYC (Long Island). I come from a working class family where we get by, but things can get pretty tight at times. I really have a strong interest in finance, and it's not just the money, I really find economics and finance very interesting,

I even have a virtual trading account and I'm beating all of the indexes significantly this year! I know a lot about the markets as well, because I follow them religiously and read about investing and business as much as I can; my friends even make fun of me because of how much I know about business and investing.

I have really good grades right now and I hope I can get into a good College like NYU or even Wharton. Alright, I know that long term I would like to start and manage a hedge fund, but I don't know exactly what I should do after college. Should I get a job in IBD or maybe trading? Which one will help me with my long term goal of becoming a HF manager?

I will officially enroll as a college student this summer in two to three weeks from now. I thought making a resume for myself would prove a good idea. I do not really have much work experience, as you will see, nor do I have many organizations I belong to. However, once I actually get to college, I plan on joining an intramural sports club and some finance/accounting related organizations.

I realize it is small and does not fill the page. I am relatively happy with it, though. Please offer some words of wisdom and criticism.

Hey everyone!

So I finally (kind of) got an internship at a Private Equity shop. I'm new to most of what's going on, and would apreciate any advice you could offer me.

Some specific things:
-I’m a Junior, soon to be Senior in High School. Any suggestions on appearing professional/minimizing the negatives of my young age and inexperience?

-The Internship is tentative; I'm to be given two weeks as a trial run to see if I like the job, and more importantly whether my boss likes me. Tips on this? Should I be more casual or formal? My boss seems to be a combination of the two. Also - any way to get him to like me in such a short span of time, other than being a good grunt and cracking the odd joke or two?

I am in HS right now and recently got accepted to a unique program with a full scholarship – I spent 3 years at one of a few non-target liberal arts schools (I think Bard was the only one I recognized on the list), and then spend 2 years at either the Columbia’s or Dartmouth’s Engineering school, and receive a BA from the liberal arts school and BS from the Ivy’s engineering school. I am guaranteed admission to the Ivy provided I get higher than a 3.0 (won’t be a problem). I was wondering how this would look on a resume, and what kind of internships I should/could get in between years.
Also, I’m pretty confident that I will get into BC, and I might be able to get into Rice. However, BC is expensive as fuck with pretty bad aid packages and I’m not 100% sure I’ll get into Rice.

What did you guys do in HS? Did you start your own business? Have a job? Blow your parents money? In HS I started a couple businesses, but I wish I had paid more attention to my grades.I I started a web hosting with business with a friend, I handled the finances and marketing he did the technical stuff. Along with that I traded stocks on the side, sometimes in school. It was a lot of fun and it allowed me to pay for college and occasionally splurge. My first car ended up being a Porsche boxter that I pretty much totaled senior year. The greatest thing I gained form these experienced was a glimpse into how real world business is run.

i was on here over a year ago with similar concerns but i just wanted to see if i could get some fresh insight. I only applied to Indiana University and Purdue University because both schools are in state and i see them as solid schools. I have been accepted into both. I am interested in studying either Accounting or Finance. I have read a lot about IBanking and think that it is what I would like to pursue. I'm also taking an accounting class right now at a small private school nearby and I enjoy that.

Hello there, WSO! I've been lurking the forums for a while now, but I've just decided to create an account and post a question.

Alright, so I'm a high school senior (no, wait, wait! Don't roll your eyes and click on the X! Hear me out!) who is looking towards a career in finance. I've already had two internships, one at a commodity information provider, and one at a PWM office of a major Bulge. Well, that's good, I suppose.

New on WSO but have been reading this for a while and have learned a lot.

I am currently an extremely free senior in high school (only ~2 hours of lesson a day) and managed to get in touch with a fund manager who works at a local ~1 billion fund through some networking (He's my dad's friend's friend). He was nice on the phone but seemed busy and told me he was going on a business trip for a few days and I could get back to him at the end of the week by dropping him a text. I sent him one last Friday but he hasn't gotten back to me yet.

Here's a high school graduation speech given by a former Morgan Stanley investment banker and current Senior Associate at the Carlyle Group.

http://cumlaudesociety.org/node/31

I found this speech rather interesting for two main reasons:

1) She's giving this speech to a group of prep school girls who probably have no idea what investment banking or private equity is, yet she still somehow manages to inspire them.

2) Her transition from academia to business was inspired by a short yet powerful poem by Robert Frost.

She has got a ridiculous resume as well. MBA from Stanford. MPhil from Cambridge. Summa Cum Laude from Harvard.

Just curious what your thoughts are...

Most of the stuff on this site I really do not understand. I get what a hedge fund is, for example. Or basic finance principles. But all the other stuff such as what a certain job does, what work actually entails, and all about specifics and how companies run I have no clue about.

How much of this is learned in school, and how much will an internship teach me? How much can I expect to know straight out of college?

Thanks.

So after having a discussion here

http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/group-post/the-rela...

And going on a tangent about crappy public schools and the problem of one-size-fits-all education, I started thinking seriously about letting high school kids work for high school credit rather than sit in a class all day.

I remember taking Business 101 in high school and wanting to learn more about how to start/operate a business. At the same time, my freshman classes were mostly review from high school. Yet, we regularly offer freshman and sophomores internships even though they probably have a very small advantage over kids in high school.

Hey guys, please pardon me for my young age.
I've recently become interested in finance and IB and have learned a lot reading up on books and the internet(including this forum). I was doing my college applications and had a few questions for those of you who care.

UCL has a program where I can study Mechanical Engineering and get to take finance classes at LSE. How would this program compare to something like Michigan w/ preferred admission? Is UCL really a good target? What school in the US would compare to UCL in terms of IB recruiting and general prestige? FYI, I'm applying mainly to US universities though(Cornell/Michigan/Duke/UIUC, etc.). In UK, I'm only applying to Warwick/LSE/UCL.

This may be a bit petty, but it's been grinding my gears for a while. Kids - The acronym "IBD" stands for "Investment Banking Division". As in - the division of a bank that performs investment banking activities. This includes things like M&A, capital raising, restructuring, etc. You can find this definition in the WSO FAQ.

Thus the sentence "I'm interviewing for a job in the IBD at JPM" is just fine and makes sense.

Similarly, the statement "I want a career in IBD" is wrong and makes you sound like a retard - say it out loud. The phrase you are searching for is "investment banking". As in - "I want a career in investment banking (IB)". Get your terminology right, because when you write sentences like "What makes IBD (read - investment banking division) a 100hr/week job?" you sound like a high school kid throwing out acronyms to sound cool.
