Is it OK to go past HR to VP?

WhiteMamba's picture

 on 4/25/13 at 11:26am

I've interviewed several times for a job, and I've been continually blocked almost by HR. I've emailed twice in two weeks and both times, I've been informed they will let me know.

I have no reason to doubt them but I have another offer on the table but I want this job more. I've told them that but nothing.

One of my interviews was with a VP. I feel I made a very good impression (hence the 4 interviews) and he responded nicely to my thank you email. I was wondering whether it would be cool for me to go past the HR team and contact the VP directly to find out where I lie in the recruiting process? I'm not sure whether this will go beyond protocol or whether I might prove to be annoying.

Any thoughts guys?

Thanks!

Is it inappropriate to ask HR or the interviewer prior to the interview about the interview format (i.e. if there will be an excel test, technicals, etc.)?

Also, is it inappropriate to ask for the length of an interview prior to the interview?

Will My Fund's HR Find Out I Lied About Taekwondo Yellow Belt?

To whom it may concern,

On my resume I have it to say that I earned my yellow belt in Taekwondo which is very impressive feat to accomplish that, but truth of the matter is I am only white belt with yellow stripe. My sensei told me I would get to yellow soon but I got carried away on a group project making my diorama for Humanities and missed the class I needed so only white belt with yellow stripe still.

I am scared that my hedge fund is going to find out about this malfeasance. I talked with portfolio manager for many minutes about my taekwondo and I think if he found out about not having attained yellow belt status, he would fire me. So my question, monkeys, is, will the HR find out when they run background check that I am in fact only white belt with yellow stripe? Do they look through pictures from my classes that get put on the bulletin board and on website? Are they allowed to contact sensei without permissions?

Please advice me, thanks.

BB HR: What is the process for checking GPA, ECs, test scores, references, criminal history, etc ?

I see couple of questions on BB background check for FO jobs every day.

There are several good threads, explaining the process and everything, but advices almost never come from someone who actually worked at the BB HR. Either people speak from their experience which is kinda random, or they just preach 10 commandments.

I would like to know how exactly are GPA, ECs, test scores, references, criminal history, etc. are being checked.

Disclaimer: This is somewhat of a rant.

I know most of the discussions going on now are in regards to SA recruiting but this pertains to FT.

The simple question I'd like to get answered - Is it possible to get brought in without HR approval anymore?

I'm not sure when it stopped, but I know you used to be able to get brought in to interview by a recommendation from a senior level person.

I would say I have established pretty good relationships with VPs and above but it always seems they can't do anything because HR doesn't see a need for the group.

Or if the situation arises when I do know there is a position available it still seems HR is deciding who to bring in.

Let's say that you had a phone interview with HR. It wasn't my best and HR told me that I'd hear back around the first week of January after people got back from the holidays. I didn't hear anything back (as expected) so I called her and left a VM. I don't have her email address. How many more times should I call to try to get an answer? I'm obviously very interested in the position and interviews are difficult to come by in this job market.

A few weeks ago I interviewed for a Corporate Strategy / Business Development role with a large firm. During the interviews, the hiring manager / group head expressed interest in me joining and I was fairly confident I would receive an offer. The next morning I received a call from an HR manager asking me what salary I was expecting / would be willing to work for. I did not give a number but told them what my previous salary at an investment bank was. He said they likely cannot match that. Did not get any verbal offer.

It is less than 1%. No you did not see wrongly. For every graduate position, there are more than 100 people applying and only one will get hired. Even getting a summa cum laude is easier than getting into a bank's graduate program.

I knew it was bad but I did not know it was that bad. For those who made it inside, congrats. For those who don't, don't blame yourself too much.

Since graduating this year, I've been pending permanent residency since May. Whilst pending permanent residency, I couldn't work or perform paid/unpaid internships because of the regulations. I can't leave my current location and look for work elsewhere in the US because I had pending government documents that were being processed.

Whilst my green card was pending I interviewed at tons of places 9/12 were final round, got dinged from all final round interviews, because HR would rather have a full fledged permanent resident that one that was pending.

Got green card this month, October, been applying everywhere and reaching out to alum. Everybody gets nervous because on paper, it looks like I have been unemployed for 5/6 months, however it was out of my control.

I transferred after my freshman year. I'm planning on leaving my first school off the resume (it's a small non-target on the west coast, you've never heard of it)

My current school's transcript lists the credits I got from my first school, though it doesn't list any grades or GPA, just the credits that got transferred over.

I'm hoping I only will have to submit my current school's transcript. If I have to submit my first school's transcript they will see I have a W in my freshman first semester. I also have a W at my new school for my first semester there, so two Ws total (but they'll only see one from my new school on my new school's transcript) I know it's not a big deal either way, but I'd rather have them not see that.

Hello There,

I Have applied for Deloitte Tax Consulting position. I am going on an office visit at Deloitte on17th of September but that is from my own research not part of the process. I have my first interview next month and I am wondering what is a whole process like. How many interview are meant to be and what are the components of each interview. This is very important to me as I can plan accordingly, since I have still some school left.

Your input is very much appreciated!!

Very close to get an offer from Mercer in their M&A consulting practice. Although it sounds cool, the HR element of the firm kind of worries me (as it may pigeon-hole me?)

Want your opinions in regards to which is better assuming salaries are similar (base 90k USD - I am an experienced candidate). Which has better exit opps?

Thanks.

About a week ago, I spoke to an analyst at a new (2-year old) boutique and he passed my resume on to the recruiter for a Fall internship. I emailed her to follow up today, and got this response: "I received your resume and cover letter from our team. At this time, we are not recruiting for fall internships. We have your resume on file and will review it upon our next recruiting efforts." The email included her company number.

This firm is really an ideal fit for me. What's the next step? Should I call and find out what the problem is and then try to make my case? Should I email periodically? Should I reach out the the partners/founders? I don't think I stand a chance at analyst recruiting with them without an internship.

What's a good next step?

One thing there was no shortage of - creepy old guys and a disregard for all those lessons we learn from those he sexual harassment trainings that were filmed in 1984.
I thought I’d share the top five lines I’ve received while in the “biz”

Monkeys,
Recently I was arrested while under the influence and will likely have some mark on my public record. Nothing serious, just a really stupid decision at the wrong time and place. Anyway, suppose that I am graduating this spring and currently have an internship; I have a full time offer upon graduation with a different firm. I will have to tell the firm where I intern immediately as the court date interferes with my work.

My question is how probable is it that I will lose the full time offer and to what extent will this follow me throughout my career? Also, since it occurred on campus will the school terminate me before I graduate?

In January I signed a FT contract for an investment banking position with a mid July start-date.

A week ago, I sent an email to my HR contact asking some quick questions and did not receive a response. I'm sure they are probably very busy in HR but is the +1 week no response a bad sign?

If something were actually wrong (i.e. no more job for you), does HR tell you right away or do they take their time...I would think they tell you right away but I guess I've heard one too many horror stories about miscues

Sorry for the paranoia

Ever since January, I have been applying for an internship literally everywhere. I have put in the extra effort simply because I come from a non target. I got 2 interviews from BB's and one from a local. But, still no dice. I am in desperate need of an internship opportunity. I cold called this one firm 2 days ago and spoke with an HR VP. I asked for the status of my summer internship application as I told him I have already applied online. (I found this internship opening through my career center job posting, and not OCR) He replied saying that there were too many applications online so he would rather take my resume via email.

Hi,

I applied for a position that was posted on my school's job board. The HR employee left her name, phone number and email in the job posting. Is it okay to call her - I just want to say that I applied for the position and a little about myself to convince the recruiter that I am a good candidate. Is it okay to do so? I want to be proactive but I also don't want to be annoying. Also, what can I do or say to improve my chances?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Drunk Magic Marker.jpg

We all know that we don't want potential employers to see Facebook photos of us passed out naked on the frat couch covered in Magic Marker. And now most of us know that employers are looking for exactly that. So managing your digital reputation is becoming more and more important. Why? According to the Harvard Business Review we are in the age of the perpetual job search.

Even if you have a job currently, you've probably got your ear to the ground and are at least passively looking for something else (and if you're not - you should be). More and more, however, employers are doing the same thing - in reverse. HR departments are scouring the web to find your dirty laundry, and they're using high-tech aggregation to pull in stuff you're not even aware is out there (your proclivity towards sports betting and midget porn, for example). A full 70% of companies surveyed admit to deciding against a candidate based on what they've dredged up.

Recruiters have been shown to not just look people up on search engines, but to dig very deep, through social media profiles, shopping profiles, online gaming sites, classifieds and auction sites (think eBay and craigslist) — and even in virtual worlds like SecondLife!

Hi, I signed an offer to start FT at a firm in late october, start date is july/august. I recently started making arrangements for beginning that job including some personal ones.
But I have not had any communication with the company since I signed offer. I got confirmation that they received my signed letter etc.

Is that normal? Should I be communicating further with them? They told me background check's done in couple of months before I start.

Hey guys,

A couple weeks back, I had a phone interview with HR. It didn't go well. My behavioral examples didn't really highlight my qualities and skills. It was clear that I was unprepared. Yesterday, I received a generic email (addressed to all applicants) that they were still deciding on who would move on to next round and that we will shortly receive a response. I know a couple guys that have already received 2nd round interviews.

So I've networked my ass off and through a contact of a contact was introduced to an HR manager at a well known asset manager. After emailing the HR manager off and on over the last 6mo with minimal replies, I emailed him last week and let him know I applied to an associate development program.

Surprisingly, he replied back and wanted to set up a time to call and discuss the position. In the course of setting up the call I emailed him back from my phone and used u instead of you.

Stupid small mistake, but do you guys think this could ding me??? Should I acknowledge my informality on the call. Am I being a bitch about this??? This would be a baller job for me and I don't want to fuck up my chances.

Thanks for the comments
