Consulting and Banking Recruiting

This isn't going to be a debate about the pros and cons so much as has anyone done both consulting and i banking recruiting at the same time?

I ask because I'll be interning this summer at BB as a sophomore so will have next summer to either return to the firm (obviously with a return offer), switch to another or move into consulting. I think I still have the idealized version of consulting and MBB in my head and it's heard to shake that off that it could be a good option versus banking.

On the other hand, I don't want to spend my whole college experience doing recruiting. I worked hard to get an internship this summer so I could hopefully spend the rest of college relatively enjoying my classes and just having fun. But then again, don't want to limit my options.

If you were an aspiring i-banker but had no other choices except these for junior SA, what would you do?

1.BO/MO role for 70K in BB (GS, JPM, MS)

2.Finance role - I am assuming BO? for 60K in well known Alternative investment fund/PE (i.e: KKR, Apollo, Blackstone)

3.Unpaid internship for IB at a boutique which good dealflow but not big ones (think Rutberg, Pharus, Trinity Capital etc)

4. Do nothing except network and became a guru at valuations and financial modelling via classes and reading books?

Chances for Cornell AEM getting BB IBD? Is it a target IB school?

I know I am going to get shot for this but I need a straight answer before I head along to do this.

I 'might' be transferring to Cornell and going into AEM. I am currently at a non-target city school Just wondering what are the chances getting into BB IBD there? Is it a target school? (I know its not HYP) and it's not as prestigious. But do big banks recruit there for IBD specifically or am I better off transferring elsewhere?

Wondering of anyone knowledgeable can shed some light on Middle office positions such as finance division ( supporting traders) and risk at BB's like Barclays?

Interested in comp, exit opps, skill set or anything you can offer. The search function doesn't really touch on this company too much.

Thanks

I'm trying to decide whether or not to change my current major...

I am an Econ major at a non-target, but have the opportunity to enter into the Accounting program. While my school is not known for its Finance/Econ/Business degrees, it does have one of the top Accounting programs in the country. With my current GPA, and assuming I will have at least a 3.5 at the time of graduation, I should be able to secure a job offer from the Big 4 if I major in Accounting.

Work there for 5 years, get into the best business school I can, get my MBA...then what?

Where do the smartest people work within the finance industry?

Which industry within finance is most rewarding for people with strong brain power? I am wondering where the most analytical skills are needed and where people can really shine with good quality work instead of being the hardest working one. So, generally, where do smart people work within finance, and where can they be truly happy (i.e. feel rewarded and satisfied)?

In term of this, what do you think of these sectors: M&A, private equity, hedge funds, trading...

Thanks for your contribution.

Anyone have a guide to Fall Recruitment? IBD

 on 9/6/11 at 1:44pm

For those of us Juniors in undergrad just starting Junior year I realize that next summer is really make it or break time in getting into IBD.

I would really appreciate a sense of a time-table for recruitment for the SA classes at boutiques and BBs.

Is it October - Nov. recruitment
January - interviews
May - August - SA

If none of the school recruit at your college, what do you do? I'm guessing a internet resume drop and application is pretty useless. What is the process like and how do you do it?

WSO help us out.

ACCA or PRM?

 on 9/5/11 at 11:11pm

Hi everyone,

I am currently thinking of enrolling in a part-time course in either ACCA or Professional Risk Manager Certification before I head off to college next fall. I understand that most accreditations (with the exception of CFA/CPA) are not seen as necessary / important in IBD, but between the two, which seems to be the better option?

I am currently leaning towards the ACCA option, mainly because it will allow me to become an accountant when I graduate, which I find especially important in today's volatile job market, notably in the Financial Services industry.

Appreciate any advice, thanks!

Comparing Offers to purchase

I work for a small group and we're in the midst of a sales process for a business we own.

My question, is there a standard form used to compare the different offers received?
The offers vary widely in terms of assets to be purchased and the conditions attached to them, do people just develop their own spreadsheet or does someone on here have a template I can use?

Thanks

I'm going to be a senior undergrad next year, but actually am going to push back my graduation so, I'm actually more of a current sophomore then. Wondering what is better if I want to eventually work in I banking? A swiss private bank located outside of the U.S. or a small boutique I bank. When applying for i banks later on, does having experience in private banking look favourable?

Appreciate the guidance anyone could provide...

Moved to NYC after playing professional golf in Florida for some time. Working for MS currently as an FA trainee focusing on new issue sales... (selling group for underwriting syndicate) ... but hoping to transfer to an Instutional Sales/Trading posito. Due to my current position I am obviously limited to to ibanks outside of MS.

So tell me everything you know about inst sales, the different titles I should be seeking, what an entry level sales job entitles, what the best firms on the street are (or the most realistic to approach), who I should be networking with, who makes hiring decisions, etc.

And if anyone is looking for guidance on the Advisor/Broker side of the business feel free to ask...

Thanks,
