You see all these posts about people's internships where they are just doing bitch work, etc . .

If you have had interns, what qualities made them the best intern? What qualities did you see in them that made you give them more work? What experiences did they have that allowed you to give them more advanced tasks?

Title says it all: when interning at a PWM shop, what are some common intern titles used?

I can think of the following:
-intern (generic)
-private wealth management intern
-wealth management intern
-private client services intern (?)

Anyone know of any other common titles for a PWM intern?

Thanks in advance guys.

Appropriate IB hairstyle?

So, I want to know an appropriate hairstyle for investment bankers. I, generally, like to spike my hair up, but I'm not sure if that is appropriate in the IB world; here's a link of my hairstyle:

http://cdn.crushable.com/files/2009/10/khphotos173...

Look at the guy in the picture. Obviously, that's not a picture of me, but of someone with a similar hairstyle.

I know some of you are probably thinking, "What the fuck kinda question is this?" I know it's quite a dumbass question to ask, but I know bankers are anal about the smallest shit; so I don't want to standout for my hairstyle.

If this is not appropriate, please let me know what styles are appropriate for bankers.

Thanks for all your help guys, and God Bless!

So I got in touch with ML's PWM hiring manager in my area (Requesting an Internship), and she said that ML now has to pay its interns.... WTF? I though this shit was free labor? This makes PWM internships much harder to ascertain for inexperienced 18-19 year old freshman. FA's have no incentive to hire us anymore... This is a whole a lot of horse shit.

I thought PWM were easy to get; I guess not anymore.

Internship help

I am seeking the advice of WSO here on my internship search.

I am interested in an equity research career, and as most analysts on this board, they likely started out with an internship somewhere. Likewise, in looking to start my career, I am looking at internship possibilities, and in doing so, I am looking for the guidance of the WSO community on the following concerns.

As a background, I don't have any finance work but I will be getting my masters at a target b-school next year after graduating from undergrad in 2011.

1. Without any prior finance work, is it imperative I get an internship?

2. How helpful is an ER internship (as opposed to, say, a PE internship) in getting a FT offer?

Where should you intern to land finance job offers?

Internships are a crucial part of the recruiting process not only because they allow you to gain experience in a specific industry, but also because they give your potential employers the opportunity to see how you work. There are a number of internship opportunities available to you and deciding which one is right depends on what industry you want to end up in. Keep in mind that one of the best aspects of getting an internship on Wall Street is the perceived selectivity. Many firms will give you a full-time first round interview just for having investment banking, sales and trading, or another highly relevant internship on your resume because of the process you must go through in obtaining that internship in the first place.

Do I need an internship to land a finance job offer?

An internship is not absolutely necessary, but it is an extremely important part of the process when trying to secure a full-time position. If you are thinking about pursuing a career in finance, an internship is a good way to find out more about the day-to-day of the job. It also gives you the opportunity to network and show the firm you're interested in that you can handle the work.

I'm currently working on a Loan sales desk. I would like to create a list of all companies that have bough decent loan tickets in the last 2-3 years. Once I've got that information, It'll be very useful for the team. If i get a list , It could reveal companies that buy paper that my bank didn't know about. This is a real way I could add value as an intern. I've tried conducting the search on Bloomberg and asking bloomberg help but have had not luck. If anyone can help, that would be amazing!

Best,

Where to do my summer banking internship?

 on 7/25/12 at 11:56am

I'm a rising sophomore in a midwest target (Chicago, Northwestern) majoring in econ and math.
I'm planning to apply for summer analyst position for next summer as a sophomore (I know my chances are slim)
I'm an international student, and I think I will be able to play around with my family connection to win a position in a bb ibd in my home country (not a "international financial hub" but a well known city).
So my question is, would doing the sa gig in my home country seriously hurt my chances of getting a full-time position later in the US? Should I do whatever it takes to secure an internship in the US to get a job here later?

And one side question: how are midwest targets represented in the wall street?

Its halfway through my internship at a boutique. I have presented trading ideas, charts using technical analysis and views about the market.

Yesterday, my MD said its time to put money where the mouth is. He let me use his Reuters account so I can look at live data and recommend trades right away. I waited till I saw a shorting opportunity. I printscreen the chart with my technical analysis and explained why I wanted to short at a certain point. He said ok, talked to his broker and it was executed late yesterday.

Before I/you say anything I'm not going to make baseless claims about Investment Banking because I don't have a clue about it all. I'm interested in Finance, Investment Banking is a topic that comes up regularly, likely because of the compensation.

-----

Aside from knowing what Investment Banking is, I haven't an idea as to what an intern at an Investment Bank does.

I've been looking for this information on the site. Right now, I can only find the Wall Street Prep Guide ad that's plastered all over the site.

1. What should I know how to do before I cold call/get an internship at an Investment Bank?

2. How much experience should I have before I bother attempting to get an internship at an Investment Bank?

Next Summer Internship Offer

Next summer I have secured an offer through contacts at a homebuilder. The position would be an intern acquisitions analyst and would be based around valuing land opportunities. The company is part of a major land development company although the homebuilder is quite large in itself.

I have read on this site that land development companies typically are the first to lay off and typically have a lower payscale. The question is, would this be the kind of opportunity that would set myself up for possible buyside opportunities in the future? After working X amount of years, is this a role that would open many doors?

Did any of you guys intern (as an undergrad) in equity research at a bulge-bracket firm (or any firm with an equity research internship program, actually)? What did you get to do during your internship?

I ask because I’m an equity research intern right now, but at a small firm with no structured internship program as such. I just want to see if I am gaining a similar set of experiences to that which an intern going through an actual program would accrue.

A sample of the kind of stuff I’ve done so far:

• Collected the specifications of all new and rumored laptops (information from company sites, press releases, tech blogs) for a Tech Sector analyst.

I am mentally prepared for the long hours, working on excel etc not leaving until the guy above you has left or has no more work for you.

But are you expected to remain glued to your seat through out the day (apart from lunch time) . How normal is it to leave your desk for 30 minutes once or twice a day to grab a coffee for your self or get some fresh air ?

Just noticed the current poll and it got me thinking, what separates a paid intern from a Summer Analyst? Is it the amount of hours per week? The structuredness of the program? I think that unless your offer letter has the words "Summer" and "Analyst" on it, you should play it safe and write "Summer Intern" on your resume. No one likes hyperbole.

So I'm getting my first intern this summer. I have been in groups with interns and I've been an intern but I've never had one 'assigned' to me before so I was hoping for some advice around how I can a) make this mutually beneficial b) not strangle him when he fucks up and c) ensure that we both have some fun along the way.

Appreciate the feedback.

So question here:

Say that one interned at company X during college, worked for 3 yrs somewhere else, then sees current opening at that company he/she interned at and wants to go back. Is that a smart thing to do?

Say that said person also kept in contact with the contacts over there.

All thoughts/opinions welcomed.

Hi all,

I just received a boutique SA offer from a firm in NYC located on Midtown. I need to find housing and I've been looking on Craigslist for awhile now but can't quite find something I'm looking for.

The internship is in IB so I need something as close to work as possible. There's a ton of Brooklyn/Wash Heights and Harlem, but I really want to avoid that area.

Any suggestions? Anyone else looking? I need a place from June 1 - End of Aug
