It’s fairly often enough that questions pop up asking about language learning. Usually the questions ask how useful it is to study a language, and which language one should study. If you go about it with the goal of fluency, then it is definitely useful, and will definitely pay off.

I’ve found that there are 5 big things you need to do to develop all-around (reading/writing/speaking/listening) fluency in a language. And if you are going to take the time to learn a language, your goal should be fluency if you hope to someday use the language in a business context. Nobody has any use for a kid who can only utter a few disconnected phrases.

To become fluent, you need to immerse yourself in the language. What does immersion mean? For starters, immersion definitely entails living in the country where the language is spoken. However, living in the country in and of itself will not immerse you. It’s entirely possible to live in a country for years and never speak the local language beyond “hi/bye” and giving basic directions to a taxi driver.

Hi,

I am currently enrolled at a German University (grad. 2014), for good I-Banking experience but do not hold a working permit for the US.

The thing is that I would really like to do an internship in NYC (really came to love the city during a one month NYSE program there). My Question now:

Do IB in the US even consider summer internship applications from International Students? And if yes, will being from Germany be an advantage or disadvantage?

Thanks a a lot!

Recently one Bettina Wassener (IHT) wrote on in her article (Link 1) that Hong Kong is losing its edge as an International Finance Hub, and is potentially in danger in the long term unless the supply of office space increases.

There are several flaws in this article and its citations, in that 1. Hong Kong is not in danger of in terms of its long-term prosperity because of a "lack of office space" and 2. that there is a lack of office space. If there were to be any imposing threats on Hong Kong's status, it would be the rapid emergence of the Chinese Markets and the rising influence of the RMB.

The reasons are as follows:

I am currently a high school senior, and I will be, hopefully, accepted into UMich, Emory, and NYU. I'm pretty confident that I will be. My majors will be French and Finance. I love the idea of working in IB, PE, HFs, or corporate finance; however, everyone tells me that the lifestyle is fast pasted and that I won't have time for anything but work. My ideal job is to travel a lot and represent companies, so I guess you could say Int'l IB or PE. Could someone give me some insight on how the lifestyle really is, or what jobs are more international business based, and what is my best option as far as schooling. I have also been accepted to University of South Carolina, which has the #1 int'l business program in the states.

Sup Oasis.

So after much thought and deliberation I've concluded that I really want to leave the US after college. I want to put myself out there and explore what the world has to offer. Perhaps find a job in Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, Japan, or wherever.

I've got one year of undergrad left and I'm at a Non-target studying finance. To be honest I don't really care what I end up doing and I wouldn't at all mind doing something non-financial as long as it has room for growth. I hate coding though so please don't recommend programming even though I know programmers are in high demand over seas.

I'm planning on traveling to Asia for a couple months. I have a personal blackberry, which I'd like to use outside of the U.S. I've heard that all you need to do is unlock the phone, buy a prepaid sim card, pop it in, and you're good to go.

Does anyone have any experience using their blackberry internationally? Do most countries sell prepaid BB sim cards? (More specifically, China and S. Korea)

Hi, I'm currently a freshman at a midwest target (think UC, NU)
A little bit about myself:
1) International student
2) Economics, math major, computer science minor
2) Current GPA is 3.95 and I am confident that I maintain my GPA to at least be 3.9
3) Currently a member of a finance club and planning to start a financial club next year
4) Two internships (Big 4 transaction and local bank PWM) to do this summer in my country

As an international student, it would be harder for me go into banking in America, and I see a lot of the seniors in my school from my country failing to get a job. Should I give up pursuing this track? If it is highly probable that I won't be able to go into banking when I graduate, I want to find an alternative as early as possible.

I was talking to a friend today who got a internship in China and he was basically saying that there are much more job openings and internship openings in China because China is still growing and producing NEW jobs, whereas America has stopped growing and reached its limit, therefore the only job openings left are jobs that have been around for a long time, only left open at times when people quit or retire; meaning there are no new jobs created. Does this mean that job prospects will probably not pick up and we should seek abroad for growing job opportunities?

International Student Applying for FT after Graduation in US

Hey guys, I have a question about international students applying for FT after graduation.

This is my last semester in US.
I have been networking a lot with different consulting firms but the firms seem to be reluctant to do any off season hiring in Spring. There are two options I can see now for myself, which are pretty bad.

Option 1: Find a job in US first so that I can stay in US until Fall semester (OPT issues) at which time I can apply to FT positions through my school.

Option 2: Return to Singapore to find FT jobs.

I graduated from college last year, and have spent the past year in China working in education and figuring my life out. I intend to continue my work here for one more year, and apply for consulting positions in the fall. My question is how much more difficult is it to get interviews for international offices where one might not have any obvious link? I have taken a liking to Asia (have lived here 1.5 years total), but I don't speak any Asian languages (I do study Mandarin out of interest and necessity but certainly not enough for any working level). That being said, I have seen on these forums that occasionally people in a similar position have applied for and been accepted to such offices.

Alright, I'm weighing options for post-undergrad. Currently, I'm a second semester junior at Georgetown. Upon graduation my GPA will probably only be around a 3.1. I have held a one year econ research assistant position, 9 months in consulting interning, about four volunteer trips abroad, and studying abroad this summer. I am an International Business/Finance double major, econ minor. Major GPA will probably be closer to a 3.65-3.90.

In the event I don't get any offers in consulting (and with my GPA it is not as likely) I would like to attend graduate school. I have loans of around $50k.

I've lived and studied in 6 countries (father is a diplomat) and I think this makes me unique/stand out among resumes given the importance of global business and cultural awareness nowadays. I want to draw special attention to this so I was wondering whether it was possible to put my personal stuff (e.g. interests, languages, etc.) at the start of the resume. This would allow the recruiter to see my international-ness straight away, drawing attention to it. Is this layout frowned upon (i.e. interests etc. at the start instead of the end) or would it be acceptable?

Thanks for your help guys

But how diverse (not in that that stupid American notion of Race, but in terms of Nationality) is Wall Street? What other (and unique) nationalities have you encountered in Finance in New York City?

I'll be 24 when i graduate with my Masters (not MBA) and I really have my heart set on working in NYC immediately after graduating LBS, I assume it would have to be on an H1B Visa from my research, but I want to know if anyone else knows or has had experience with this situation. Will the London Business School name make it easier for me to get hired and get my Visa sponsored? Am I more likely to get sponsorship from a BB or from a boutique? Is it easier to get sponsored in some areas more than others, for instance do more non-americans get hired into analyst positions in IBD than S&T or anything like that?
